I had spent ten hours on my feet at work, moving from one room to another, helping people who needed more assistance than they wanted to admit. All I wanted was to get home, put the groceries away, heat whatever leftovers were still edible, and get my son into bed.

The evening had turned bitterly cold while we were inside. Wind pushed scraps of paper along the sidewalk, and the parking lot lights threw pale circles across the pavement. I tightened my coat around myself and shifted the grocery bags against my hip.

Leo was walking beside me, talking about a dinosaur he wanted to draw for school, when he suddenly stopped.

“Mom.”

There was something in his voice that made me stop too.

He was staring toward the brick wall beside the grocery store entrance. A man sat there with his back against the building, one leg stretched awkwardly in front of him. A dark brace wrapped around his knee and disappeared beneath the cuff of his jeans. His coat was thin enough that the cold seemed to move straight through it.

He wasn’t calling to customers. He wasn’t holding a cardboard sign. He wasn’t even looking at anyone.

He was simply trying not to shiver.

“Mom,” Leo said again, quieter this time.

“I see him.”

The man noticed us looking and lifted his head. His face carried the worn, guarded expression of someone accustomed to being ignored. He raised one hand slightly.

“I’m not asking you for anything,” he said.

His voice surprised me. It wasn’t harsh or bitter. It was simply tired.

“I know,” I answered.

I should have kept walking.

That was the sensible thing. I knew every warning about bringing strangers into your home. I knew what people would say about a single mother opening her apartment to a man she had met beside a grocery store. I knew I had a child to protect, bills to pay, and very little room for mistakes.

But Leo was still watching him.

“What happened to your leg?” my son asked.

“Leo,” I said sharply.

The man gave a faint smile.

“It’s all right.”

He tapped the side of the brace with two fingers.

“Work injury.”

Leo studied the brace.

“Does it hurt?”

The man looked down at his knee before answering.

“Sometimes.”

That single word stayed with me.

Not always.

Not never.

Sometimes.

Leo looked at me, and I recognized the question before he spoke it.

“Does he have somewhere to sleep?”

I looked back at the man.

“Do you?”

He glanced toward the street.

“There’s a shelter about four miles from here.”

“You’re going there?”

“I tried.”

He rubbed his hands together.

“They were full.”

“Did they give you another place?”

“Not tonight.”

The wind came harder then, lifting the corner of an old advertisement from the wall behind him. His knee trembled. His mouth tightened.

I moved instinctively.

“Wait.”

“I’ve got it.”

“You don’t.”

He looked at me.

For a moment, neither of us moved.

Then he accepted my arm.

The contact was brief. His hand was cold enough that I could feel it through my sleeve.

We crossed the parking lot slowly.

I kept expecting myself to change my mind.

I didn’t.

Our apartment wasn’t impressive. It was a small two-bedroom place in an aging building where the pipes complained whenever somebody took a shower and the front door needed a firm shove before it would close properly. The couch had a faded blanket thrown over one arm, and the kitchen sink had been dripping for weeks.

I had stopped noticing most of those things.

Julian noticed them immediately.

He didn’t comment.

That somehow made me more aware of them.

Inside, Leo kicked off his shoes.

“Mom, can he use the bathroom first?”

“Give him a minute.”

Julian stood just inside the door, looking uncomfortable.

“You can put your bag there,” I said.

He moved toward the couch.

Then he stopped.

“Where do you want me?”

“The couch.”

He nodded.

“Of course.”

I pointed toward the bathroom.

“Towels are in the cabinet. My hands moved automatically, but my mind kept returning to the man behind the bathroom door.

I had invited a stranger into our home.

A man whose name I had known for less than fifteen minutes.

A man who had nowhere else to sleep.

I checked the lock on the front door twice.

Then I checked Leo’s bedroom.

My son was already in bed.

“You okay?” I asked.

He nodded.

“Julian seems nice.”

“You don’t know that yet.”

“I know.”

He pulled the blanket up.

“Mom?”

“Yes?”

“Are we helping him?”

I sat on the edge of his bed.

“For tonight.”

Leo thought about that.

“Sometimes one night is a lot.”

I looked at him.

He said it as though it were obvious.

I kissed his forehead.

“Go to sleep.”

When I returned to the living room, Julian was sitting on the couch wearing my brother’s sweatshirt.
