the sound of something knocking softly against the kitchen counter.

For one confused second, I forgot Julian was there.

Then I remembered.

I slipped out of bed and walked toward the living room.

The couch was empty.

My stomach tightened.

I checked the bathroom.

Empty.

The front door was unlocked.

I opened it.

The hallway was empty too.

Julian was gone.

I stood there for a moment, feeling an unexpected mixture of relief and disappointment.

He had kept his word.

That should have been the end of it.

Then Leo appeared behind me.

“Where is he?”

“He left.”

Leo dripping.

I stared at it.

Then I turned it on.

Water came out normally.

I shut it off.

No dripping.

I looked beneath the sink.

A small wrench lay on the cabinet floor.

I picked it up.

“Mom?”

I turned around.

Leo was staring at me.

“Did Julian fix it?”

“I don't know.”

But I knew.

The strange thing was that I wasn't angry.

I was mostly confused.

I had gone to bed with a broken faucet.

Now it worked.

I glanced at the clock.

I had twenty minutes to get Leo ready and leave for work.

There wasn't time to investigate.

I made breakfast, packed Leo's lunch, and reminded him three times to put on his shoes.

Before we left, he stood at the door.

“Maybe Julian forgot something.”

“Maybe.”

“He might come back.”

“He said he'd leave.”

Leo opened the door.

It moved smoothly.

I stopped.

Our front door had been sticking for months.

Usually I had to lean my shoulder against it to make the latch catch.

Now it closed with a quiet click.

I looked down.

The upper hinge had fresh marks around the screws.

I didn't say anything.

Neither did Leo.

On the way to work, my mind kept returning to those two repairs.

I told myself they were coincidences.

They weren't.

But I didn't know yet what they meant.

My shift was busy enough to keep me from thinking about it for several hours.

By lunchtime, I had nearly forgotten.

Then my phone buzzed.

It was Leo's school.

I answered immediately.

The secretary told me he had gotten through the morning fine and only wanted to confirm that I would be picking him up after my shift.

I said yes.

When I hung up, I saw a message from my landlord.

The notice.

Three weeks overdue.

I already knew what it said.

I didn't need to open it.

Still, I did.

The amount due was followed by a warning about additional action if I failed to make a payment.

I put my phone face down.

Three hundred dollars.

That was the number that had been haunting me.

Not enough to change my life.

Just enough to threaten it.

I had expected another paycheck to solve the problem.

But the electric bill had risen.

Leo needed new shoes.

The car had needed a repair.

Every time I caught up with one thing, another bill seemed to slide underneath the door.

By the end of my shift, I was exhausted enough to feel hollow.

I picked up Leo and drove home.

Neither of us spoke much.

When we reached our building, I carried the grocery bag in one hand and Leo's backpack in the other.

I unlocked the apartment.

The smell reached me first.

Fresh bread.

Something warm and buttery.

And beneath it, the sharp scent of lemon cleaner.

I stopped.

Leo bumped into my back.

“Mom?”

I didn't answer.

For a second, I genuinely wondered whether I had opened the wrong apartment.

Then I saw the refrigerator.

Leo's crooked red dinosaur drawing was still taped to the door.

We were home.

But it didn't look like our home.

The blanket that usually lay crumpled across the couch had been folded.

Leo's shoes were lined up neatly against the wall.

The mail that had been scattered across the little table was stacked into separate piles.

The carpet had been vacuumed.

The kitchen counters were clear.

The sink was empty.

I stood motionless.

Then something shifted in the kitchen.

A pan scraped against a burner.

My heart jumped.

“Mom.”

“Stay behind me.”

I took one step forward.

Julian appeared around the corner.

He was wearing my brother's gray sweatshirt.

His knee brace was still strapped to his leg.

In one hand, he held a wooden spoon.

He stopped when he saw my face.

“I know how this looks.”

“Do you?”

His eyes moved around the room.

“I stayed out of the bedrooms.”

“That wasn't the question.”

Leo pushed past me.

“Julian!”

He ran into the cheese sandwiches sat beside a pot of tomato soup.

A loaf of bread cooled on a cutting board.

“You made bread?”

Julian shrugged.

“I had there was something humiliating in the way he said it.

He hadn't chosen to return.

He had failed to get away.

“So you came back
