I had volunteered there for years, mostly helping with holiday meals, clothing drives, and whatever administrative work Miriam needed when the staff was overwhelmed.

Miriam was the director.

She was the kind of woman who could make you feel useful without making you feel pitied.

When I pulled into the parking lot, most of the Christmas decorations were already glowing in the windows. A paper snowflake had fallen from one of the glass doors and was lying beneath a welcome mat.

I carried my bag inside.

Miriam looked up from the reception desk.

Her eyebrows rose.

"Claire?"

"Hi."

She looked at the bag.

Then at me.

"What happened?"

I forced a small smile.

"Apparently I'm homeless for Christmas Eve."

Her expression changed immediately.

She came around the desk.

"Who did something?"

I shook my head.

"I don't know yet."

That answer surprised both of us.

Miriam didn't ask for details. She simply took my coat, hung it on the rack, and told me there was an empty office upstairs where I could sleep if I needed somewhere quiet.

I sat in that office for almost an hour listening to the building settle around me.

Someone was laughing downstairs.

A child was running through the hallway.

A microwave beeped.

Normal sounds.

Safe sounds.

My phone remained silent.

I expected David to call.

He didn't.

At 11:43 p.m., I finally called him.

He answered on the fourth ring.

"What?"

I almost didn't recognize his voice.

"How are things?"

"Fine."

"Are the kids okay?"

"They're fine."

"Is Sarah there?"

A pause.

"Yes."

I closed my eyes.

"Did they ask about me?"

"Claire, don't start."

"I asked whether they asked about me."

"They know you're spending the night elsewhere."

"Because you told them?"

"Because that's what happened."

I pressed my fingers against my forehead.

"David, I don't understand why you couldn't simply tell Sarah that I live there."

"She's the children's mother."

"I know."

"Then why are you fighting this?"

"I'm not fighting Sarah. I'm asking why my husband thinks I should disappear for Christmas."

His breathing changed.

"Because it would have been easier."

"For whom?"

Silence.

"For everyone," he finally said.

I ended the call.

A few minutes later, my phone rang.

It was a number I didn't recognize.

I almost ignored it.

Then I answered.

"Hello?"

"Claire?"

The woman's voice was familiar.

"Sarah?"

"Yes."

I sat upright.

"Where did you get my number?"

"I've always had it."

That wasn't true, or at least I had never known she had it.

She sounded nervous.

"Can we talk?"

I looked at the clock.

"About what?"

"David."

My stomach tightened.

"Go ahead."

"He told me you were trying to turn the kids against me."

I said nothing.

Sarah continued.

"He said you only helped Ethan and Chloe because you wanted them dependent on you."

I felt a strange calm settle over me.

"Did he tell you anything else?"

"He said our marriage was falling apart."

I looked at the overnight bag beside the desk.

"He told you that?"

"He said you were unstable. That you were reckless with money. That you were planning to make the children choose between you and me."

I almost laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was so absurd that my mind needed somewhere to put the disbelief.

"Sarah, did you believe him?"

Another silence.

"I did."

That hurt more than I expected.

Then she said, "Until tonight."

"What changed?"

"He showed me bank statements."

My hand tightened around the phone.

"What statements?"

"They show that you transferred fifty-two thousand four hundred dollars from your savings account to Safe Harbor."

I stared at the wall.

"I didn't."

"Your name is on them."

"I didn't transfer that money."

"That's what I told him."

"No," I said. "You said that because you believe the documents."

"I don't know what to believe."

"Did you see the transactions in the actual banking system?"

"No."

"Did you see my banking app?"

"No."

"What did he show you?"

"Printed copies."

That mattered.

I could hear something in Sarah's breathing change.

"What?"

"I don't know," she whispered.

"You do. You just haven't said it."

"He was very angry when I asked why there were no electronic records."

I sat back.

"Sarah, listen carefully. I have never transferred fifty-two thousand four hundred dollars to Safe Harbor."

"I believe you."

"You didn't five minutes ago."

"I know."

Her voice cracked.

"I'm sorry."

Before I could answer, another voice came through the phone.

David.

"That's enough."

Something struck the floor.

Sarah gasped.

Then I heard Chloe.

Her voice was low and frightened.

"Dad's going upstairs."

I sat forward.

"Chloe?"

"Claire?"

"Where are you?"

"In the kitchen."

"Is your mother with you?"

"Yes."

"Where's Ethan?"

"He's here."

"Is your father angry?"

She didn't answer immediately.

"Yes."

"Listen to me. Don't follow him."

"Why?"

"Stay downstairs with Ethan and your mother."

"What is he doing?"

I lowered my voice.

"I don't know yet."

Chloe whispered, "He's going to his office."

"Don't go after him."

"But—"

"Please trust me."

She went quiet.

Then she said, "Okay."

The call ended.

I sat motionless.

Miriam had been standing in the doorway.

"What happened?"

I told her everything.

She listened without interrupting.

When I finished, she picked up her phone.

"Safe Harbor never received fifty-two thousand four hundred dollars from you."

"I know."

"No, Claire. I mean we can verify it."

She called the shelter treasurer.

While she waited, I stared at the Christmas lights outside the window.

A minute later, Miriam covered the phone and looked at me.

"There were donations under your name."

My pulse quickened.

"How much?"

"Four online donations over eight months."

"From me?"

"Apparently."

"How much?"

"Ninety-two dollars. No. Wait."

She looked at the screen.

"Nine hundred and twenty altogether."

I shook my head.

"I didn't make any of them."

Miriam frowned.

"Then someone used your name."

"Who?"

She checked the payment records.

"The payments came from a corporate account."

"What company?"

"Oak Creek Holdings."

The name hit me with an unexpected sense of recognition.

"Oak Creek."

"You know it?"

"David mentioned it once."

"What did he say?"

"That it belonged to someone he knew from college."

Miriam looked back at the screen.

"That's strange."

"Why?"

"The public donor name is yours."

I understood before she finished.

Small donations.

My name.

A legitimate charitable organization.

A trail that appeared harmless.

A much larger amount supposedly transferred from me to the same organization.

I stood up.

"David isn't trying to prove I stole money."

Miriam watched me.

"He's trying to make people believe I did."

My phone buzzed.

A message from David.

Come home now. We need to talk before you make this worse.

I read it twice.

Then another message appeared.

Please don't call the police.

I hadn't mentioned the police.

Not once.

Miriam saw my face.

"What did he say?"

I showed her.

She went very still.

"Claire."

"I know."

"No. I don't think you do."

She pointed at the second message.

"You never told him you were considering calling the police."

I stared at the screen.

Suddenly, the room felt much smaller.

David wasn't merely trying to keep me away from the house.

He was afraid of what I might discover.

And whatever was waiting behind that locked office door had apparently become important enough for him to fear the police before I had even thought of calling them.

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: The Children Found Papers David Never Meant Them to See, and One Signature on a Property Document Changed What I Thought This Fight Was About

I drove for nearly twenty minutes before I realized I was heading toward Safe Harbor.
