To anyone looking quickly, it appears consistent."

"But the actual money went to Oak Creek."

"Yes."

She leaned back.

"Which means we need to know what Oak Creek is."

"I know the name."

"How?"

"David mentioned it once."

"What did he tell you?"

"That it belonged to a fraternity brother."

Jessica typed the name into a public business database.

She stared at the screen.

Then she looked at me.

"Claire."

"What?"

"Are you sure David told you it belonged to someone else?"

"Yes."

She turned the monitor toward me.

Oak Creek Holdings.

Registered owner.

David.

I felt the room tilt.

"No."

Jessica didn't say anything.

I read the record again.

David's name was there.

His name.

His company.

The company that had received fifty-two thousand four hundred dollars from our account.

The company connected to the small donations made publicly under my name.

The company my husband had described as belonging to somebody else.

I sat back.

"How long has he owned it?"

"Several years."

"Why would he lie about it?"

"That's what we're going to find out."

Jessica began pulling additional records.

The more she found, the worse the picture became.

Oak Creek owned commercial properties.

Several.

Some were heavily financed.

Others had been used as collateral for additional borrowing.

"The debt is significant," she said.

"How significant?"

She opened another document.

"At least several million."

I stared at the numbers.

"How much?"

"We'll need complete records to know exactly."

"Give me the number you have."

She hesitated.

"Close to three million dollars in liabilities."

I thought of David sitting at our kitchen table two nights earlier.

His calm voice.

His insistence that I simply stay somewhere else.

His refusal to explain.

He hadn't looked like a man worried about Christmas.

He had looked like a man trying to buy time.

Jessica noticed the change in my expression.

"What are you thinking?"

"He didn't want me out because Sarah was coming."

She waited.

"He needed the house empty."

"Why?"

"I don't know yet."

Jessica opened the property records.

The house appeared in the county database.

My name.

The trust.

The restrictions.

She read silently for several seconds.

"Claire, this is important."

"What?"

"Your father's trust restricts transfer and encumbrance."

"Meaning?"

"David can't simply borrow against the property because he's your husband."

I remembered the manila envelope.

The forged signature.

The address.

"Unless he convinced someone that I had transferred my interest."

Jessica nodded.

"Exactly."

The realization came slowly.

David wasn't just preparing for a divorce.

He was preparing a story about why he should control the property.

And he had started building that story before Christmas Eve.

"Can you find out whether he tried to use the house as collateral?"

Jessica's expression changed.

"I can request the lender records."

"Do it."

She made the call.

While we waited, I thought about the weeks before Christmas.

David had started asking strange questions.

How much equity did I think the house had?

Where were my father's original documents?

Had I updated the trust after my father's death?

I had dismissed all of it as financial curiosity.

Now every question felt different.

Jessica's phone rang.

She listened.

Then she covered the receiver.

"The lender's legal department flagged a proposed transaction involving your property."

My mouth went dry.

"What transaction?"

"An application connected to Oak Creek."

"For what?"

"A large loan."

"How large?"

She listened again.

"Large enough that the house would have been a significant part of the collateral package."

I stood.

"He was going to use my house."

"That's what it appears."

"But he didn't have the right."

"Correct."

"Then why the forged document?"

Jessica looked at me.

"To make it appear he did."

Everything suddenly connected.

The money.

The fake donations.

The bank statements.

The property document.

The request that I disappear on Christmas Eve.

David had been constructing a version of reality in which I was reckless, unstable, financially dishonest, and willing to give away our assets.

In that version, he wasn't stealing from me.

He was protecting himself from me.

I sat back down.

"What happens now?"

"We preserve evidence."

"Will he know?"

"Eventually."

"I don't want him to destroy anything."

"Then don't warn him."

My phone buzzed.

It was Chloe.

I answered.

"Hello?"

"Claire, Dad called."

"What did he say?"

"He asked whether you had spoken to a lawyer."

My heart stopped.

"What did you tell him?"

"The truth."

"What truth?"

"That I didn't know."

I exhaled.

"Good."

She lowered her voice.

"There's something else."

"What?"

"He came back last night."

"Did he take anything?"

"He went straight to his office."

"Was his laptop with him?"

"No."

That mattered.

"Where is it?"

"I don't know."

"Don't touch it."

"I won't."

"Chloe, listen carefully. If your father comes back, stay with your mother."

"Okay."

"And don't search his office."

"I wasn't going to."

"I know."

She was silent.

Then she said, "He kept saying you were going to ruin everything."

I closed my eyes.

"Did he say what everything meant?"

"No."

The call ended.

Jessica had heard enough.

"We need to move carefully."

I nodded.

"Can I go home?"

"Not yet."

"Why?"

"Because David asked you to leave. We don't know what he expects you to do next."

I looked through the rain-streaked window.

Two days earlier, I had believed my marriage had suffered a painful Christmas misunderstanding.

Now I was looking at forged documents, unauthorized transfers, hidden corporate ownership, and a property loan application.

The marriage problem was real.

But it wasn't the whole problem.

Jessica gathered the documents.

"Claire, there's something you need to understand."

"What?"

"If these records are authentic, your husband wasn't improvising."

I looked at her.

"He planned this."

She nodded.

"And he may have been planning it longer than either of us realizes."

I thought of the overnight bag sitting upstairs at Safe Harbor.

One small bag.

One night away.

A decision that had seemed humiliating but temporary.

Now I understood why David had been so calm when I walked out.

He had not been asking me to leave.

He had been counting on me leaving.

And I had just realized that the most dangerous thing about his plan was not what he wanted me to lose.

It was what he needed me to believe first.

Click here to continue reading: PART 5: The Evidence Forced Me to Reconsider Every Quiet Conversation We Had Shared, Especially the Questions David Had Asked Me About My Father’s Trust

December 26 began with rain.
