I knew his weaknesses, but I also knew how convincing he could be when he wanted something."

That was the first honest description of David I had heard from someone who had known him before me.

"What changed your mind?"

"The documents."

She looked toward the house.

"Once I realized the papers were forged, I started remembering things too."

"What things?"

"He asked me to come for Christmas months ago."

I looked up.

"Months?"

"Yes."

"Then Christmas Eve wasn't spontaneous."

"No."

She swallowed.

"He wanted the children here. He wanted you gone. And he wanted me to believe you were dangerous."

The pieces continued to settle into place.

David had needed Sarah not because he wanted a family Christmas.

He needed her as a witness to the story he was constructing.

The children's biological mother was present.

The unstable wife was absent.

The husband was protecting everyone.

It would have looked convincing.

If not for the money.

If not for the forged documents.

If not for one sentence that had betrayed the entire plan.

The kids' real mother is coming.

He had framed my absence as necessary because Sarah's presence was supposedly legitimate.

But the house wasn't about Sarah.

It was about the property.

That afternoon, Jessica received the court authorization.

We went to Northbridge.

The facility was a low concrete building with cameras mounted above every entrance.

A manager met us in the lobby.

He reviewed the authorization and led us into a restricted corridor.

Locker 417.

The key wasn't in David's briefcase.

The facility had its own access system.

The manager opened it.

Inside were three folders.

One contained corporate records.

Another contained loan agreements.

The third contained the property documents.

The original forged transfer was there.

I stared at my signature.

Seeing it on the original paper was different from seeing a photograph.

The pressure of the pen strokes.

The slight hesitation before the last letter of my name.

Whoever had done it had studied my handwriting carefully.

Jessica photographed it.

Then she noticed something else.

"Claire."

"What?"

"There are fingerprints on the page."

I looked at her.

"We're not touching it."

The officer sealed the evidence.

Then the manager handed Jessica another envelope.

"This was attached to the locker."

"What is it?"

"Mail."

The envelope was addressed to David.

The return address belonged to the lender.

It contained a rejection notice.

The loan had been denied.

Not suspended.

Denied.

The reason was listed as insufficient legal title to the property.

I exhaled.

"Then why did he keep going?"

Jessica looked at the date.

The rejection had been issued on December 23.

One day before he told me to leave.

I felt the cold settle in my chest.

"He knew the loan was failing."

Jessica nodded.

"So he tried to create new evidence."

"And the forged document."

"Exactly."

The plan had changed at the last moment.

He had expected the lender to accept the property documents.

When they didn't, he needed another way to make the title appear clean.

And that meant creating the illusion that I had voluntarily surrendered my rights.

There was one more folder.

Inside were printed emails.

One message caught my attention.

It was from an unknown address.

You promised she would leave before Christmas.

David had replied:

She will.

I read the sentence again.

My hands began to shake.

"Who sent this?"

Jessica traced the address.

"It's not registered to a person."

"Can you find out?"

"Eventually."

The officer sealed the folder.

As we left the facility, my phone rang.

It was Ethan.

"Claire?"

"Yes."

"Dad called me."

"What did he say?"

"He asked where the documents were."

My heart tightened.

"What documents?"

"The ones from the office."

"What did you tell him?"

"That I didn't know."

"Good."

There was silence.

Then Ethan said something that made me stop walking.

"He asked if Mom was still staying at the house."

I looked at Sarah.

"Why?"

"I don't know."

"What did you say?"

"That she was."

He hesitated.

"Then Dad said, 'She won't be there tomorrow.'"

The call ended.

I stared at Jessica.

"What does that mean?"

"I don't know."

But I knew one thing.

David had lost the loan.

The forged document was in our possession.

The bank knew about the unauthorized transfers.

His corporate records were exposed.

He should have been running.

Instead, he was still making plans.

That meant the financial scheme wasn't the only thing we had uncovered.

There was another reason he believed tomorrow mattered.

And I had a terrible feeling it involved the children.

<a
