He is interested in what becomes available to him through her.

I stopped reading.

My father had understood David before I did.

Maybe before David even understood himself.

The final pages were financial records.

David had used my father's first loan to establish Oak Creek.

When that failed, he began borrowing against other assets.

Then he started using our joint account.

The amounts increased.

The final transfer was the fifty-two thousand four hundred dollars.

But the money wasn't used to pay Oak Creek's lenders.

It went to an offshore account.

I looked at Jessica.

"Where did it go?"

She traced the account.

"A private investment fund."

"Whose?"

"David's."

I stared at the page.

"He wasn't just trying to cover debt."

"No."

"He was moving money for himself."

Jessica nodded.

"He may have intended to leave."

The realization came slowly.

David had planned an exit.

The house would have covered his debt.

The money would have financed his next move.

And the forged documents would have left me responsible for the collapse.

But there was still something missing.

Why had he brought Sarah into the house?

Jessica found the answer in another letter.

David had written to Sarah in November.

He wanted her to spend Christmas with the children.

He promised that Claire would not be present.

Sarah had assumed he was trying to repair his relationship with the children.

He wasn't.

He needed witnesses.

He needed Ethan and Chloe to believe I had voluntarily stayed away.

He needed Sarah to confirm that I had been excluded because of family conflict.

And he needed everyone distracted while he completed the loan process.

I felt a wave of anger.

Not explosive anger.

Something colder.

David had turned Christmas into a stage.

Every person in the house had been assigned a role.

Sarah was the biological mother.

Ethan and Chloe were the children.

I was the unreasonable wife.

David was the husband trying to keep peace.

But behind the scene was a financial plan.

Jessica closed the file.

"We have enough to establish intent."

"Will he be arrested?"

"Not necessarily tonight."

"Why?"

"Because investigators need to locate him and secure the remaining evidence."

I looked at the documents.

"Then we find him."

"No."

She said it firmly.

"You do not find him."

"Then who does?"

"The authorities."

I knew she was right.

But there was another problem.

Daniel had disappeared.

His phone went straight to voicemail.

Sarah tried twice.

Nothing.

I called him.

No answer.

The man who knew Ethan's history had suddenly become unreachable.

That frightened me.

We returned to the cabin.

The police had secured the property.

Ethan sat in the living room with Chloe.

Neither had eaten.

I ordered food.

For a few minutes, nobody discussed David.

Then Ethan said, "I want to meet Daniel."

Sarah looked at him.

"I don't know where he is."

"I do."

Everyone turned toward him.

"What?"

"I saw him yesterday."

Sarah stood.

"Where?"

"At the train station."

"When?"

"Before Dad called."

I stared at Ethan.

"Why didn't you tell us?"

"Because I thought he was helping Dad."

"Did he speak to you?"

"He asked if I was Ethan."

"What did you say?"

"I said yes."

"What happened?"

"He gave me a number."

Ethan pulled a folded piece of paper from his pocket.

The number was written in Daniel's handwriting.

I called it.

A woman answered.

"Hello?"

"I'm calling for Daniel Mercer."

"Who is this?"

"My name is Claire."

Silence.

Then the woman said, "Daniel told me you might call."

"Where is he?"

"He went to meet someone."

"Who?"

"David."

My heart stopped.

"When?"

"Two hours ago."

"Where?"

She hesitated.

"An old warehouse near the river."

Jessica immediately called the police.

We gave them the location.

Twenty minutes later, officers arrived.

The warehouse was empty.

But there was evidence that someone had been there.

A chair.

Two coffee cups.

A briefcase.

Inside the briefcase was Daniel's wallet.

And a note.

Claire,

If you are reading this, David knows the evidence exists.

Do not trust any message from him.

The next line was underlined.

He is going to offer you a deal.

I stared at the words.

A deal.

I didn't want a deal.

I wanted the truth.

But David knew something we didn't.

He knew how to make people choose between two terrible options.

The phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

"Claire."

David.

"Where is Daniel?"

"Safe."

"You're lying."

"No."

"What do you want?"

"I want to see you."

"No."

"You should hear what I have to say."

"Everything you've said has been a lie."

He laughed softly.

"Not everything."

I looked at Jessica.

She shook her head.

Don't agree to anything.

David continued.

"You think your father protected you."

"He did."

"He protected you from the wrong person."

"What does that mean?"

"Ask him why he never told you what happened to your mother."

The call ended.

I stood frozen.

My mother had been dead for years.

As far as I knew, there was nothing left to discover.

But David had just introduced another secret.

And I was beginning to understand his pattern.

Whenever the truth cornered him, he opened another door.

Another wound.

Another uncertainty.

Anything to make me question what I already knew.

This time, I refused to follow him blindly.

I looked at Jessica.

"We don't chase his secrets."

She nodded.

"We make him explain them."

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: David Finally Appeared With One Last Bargain, but the Evidence He
