7 – Richard Tried to Remove Leo From the Trust, but His Own Records Revealed Why the Sterling Family Had Been So Desperate for a Son

Richard's challenge reached court three weeks later.

His argument was simple.

Leo had not been born through a lawful family-planning process.

Therefore, Richard claimed, the trust's definition of “male descendant” did not apply.

My attorney called it what it was.

An attempt to control the child through money.

The judge refused to hear the matter immediately.

Instead, the court ordered disclosure of every document related to the trust's creation.

That was when we discovered the first major surprise.

The trust was older than Carter.

Older than me.

Older than Chloe.

Richard had established it when Carter was still a teenager.

The original document contained language about succession, family bloodlines, and male descendants.

But there was another clause.

A clause Richard had never mentioned.

The trust could be amended only with unanimous consent from three trustees.

Richard had never obtained that consent.

My attorney looked at me.

“If he's relying on an amended version, we may have a problem for him.”

“What amendment?”

“The one that supposedly excludes children born outside the Sterling family's preferred circumstances.”

I stared at her.

“So Richard changed it?”

“He tried.”

“Was it valid?”

“We don't know yet.”

We subpoenaed the trustees.

Two were elderly attorneys who had served the family for decades.

The third was Richard's former business partner.

All three produced the same original document.

None had signed the amendment.

Richard had tried to create a new version without authorization.

That discovery shifted the case.

But it also exposed something more disturbing.

The original trust didn't require a son.

It required descendants.

Male or female.

The male-heir language had been added later.

My attorney showed me the handwriting.

Richard's.

The amendment had been drafted privately.

It had never been legally adopted.

Carter had grown up believing the family fortune depended on producing a boy because his father had told him so.

For years, Carter had lived under a rule that wasn't actually a rule.

He had sacrificed his marriage for a lie.

The realization made me sad rather than satisfied.

Not for Richard.

For Carter.

For the children.

For all the years that could never be returned.

When Carter learned about the original trust, he called me.

“Did you know?”

“No.”

“My father lied to me.”

“Yes.”

“He told me everything depended on a son.”

“He believed it.”

“That doesn't make it true.”

“No.”

There was a long silence.

Then he said, “I hurt you because I wanted his approval.”

“Yes.”

“I don't know how to live with that.”

“You start by admitting it without asking anyone else to make you feel better.”

He breathed out.

“I deserve that.”

“You deserve consequences.”

“I know.”

The next day, Carter signed a sworn statement admitting his role in the embryo transfer.

He also agreed to cooperate with the federal investigation.

His attorneys warned him it could expose him to criminal liability.

He signed anyway.

For the first time, he was making a choice that did not benefit him.

The investigation into Jessica's former coworker revealed how the fraud had been accomplished.

She had accessed an old patient database using credentials that should have been disabled.

Jessica had supplied information about the embryo.

Carter had supplied his genuine signature.

The fraudulent consent form had been inserted into the transfer file.

Then the embryo had been released.

Every step required someone to look away.

Every person involved had done so.

The truth was not one terrible decision.

It was a chain of them.

One afternoon, Chloe came home from school carrying a drawing.

She placed it on the table.

There were four children in it.

Two girls.

One boy.

And a baby.

“That's us,” she said.

I looked at the picture.

“Who is the baby?”

“Leo.”

“And the boy?”

She smiled.

“That's Leo too.”

I laughed.

“You drew him twice?”

“He's going to grow.”

Emma came running into the kitchen.

“Mom! Chloe made Leo with hair.”

“What color?”

“Brown.”

Emma frowned.

“He might have blonde hair.”

Chloe shrugged.

“He can have whatever hair he wants.”

I watched them argue over crayons.

The ordinary sound of it was almost painful.

This was what Carter had failed to understand.

A family wasn't a bloodline on paper.

It was breakfast.

Arguments over crayons.

Nightmares at two in the morning.

Homework.

Fevers.

Lost shoes.

Birthday candles.

It was showing up.

Leo was born into scandal, but he didn't have to grow up inside it.

That became my priority.

The custody hearing concluded several weeks later.

The judge granted me sole physical custody.

Carter received supervised visitation.

Jessica received structured contact, subject to counseling and court review.

The court also ordered that no parent or grandparent could describe Leo as an heir in his presence or use his inheritance as a condition of affection.

The language sounded strange.

But I understood why it was there.

A child should never have to wonder whether he is loved because of who he is or because of what his name might unlock.

Richard appealed.

The appeal failed.

The trust remained intact.

More importantly, the court confirmed that all descendants were entitled to equal consideration under the original document.

Chloe and Emma were protected.

Leo was protected.

The heir they had fought over did not exist.

There were simply three children.

Three.

The first supervised visit with Carter happened in a family center near downtown Seattle.

I brought Leo.

Chloe and Emma came too because they wanted to see their father.

Carter stood when we entered.

His eyes immediately went to the baby.

Then he stopped himself.

He looked at Chloe.

“Hi.”

She nodded.

“Hi.”

Emma ran forward before I could stop her.

She hugged him.

He froze.

Then he hugged her back.

“I'm sorry,” he whispered.

She pulled away.

“For what?”

He looked at me.

I shook my head.

He looked back at her.

“For hurting you.”

Emma considered that.

“Are you going to do it again?”

His eyes filled.

“No.”

“Okay.”

She took his hand.

Then she dragged him toward the table where she had placed a puzzle.

Carter looked at me over her shoulder.

I didn't smile.

But I didn't stop him.

Later, when the girls were playing, Carter sat beside me.

“Thank you.”

“For what?”

“For bringing them.”

“They wanted to come.”

“I thought you'd keep them from me.”

“I almost did.”

He nodded.

“You would have had every reason.”

“Yes.”

He looked toward Leo.

“I don't know how to be his father.”

“Start by learning his name without thinking about your father's approval.”

He nodded.

“Leo.”

“Again.”

“Leo.”

I looked at him.

“Good.”

He smiled faintly.

The visit ended after two hours.

Carter hugged the girls goodbye.

He didn't ask to hold Leo.

That mattered.

He understood that the baby was not something he was entitled to simply because he was his genetic father.

As we left, Chloe turned around.

“Dad?”

Carter looked up.

“Can we come again?”

His face broke.

“Yes.”

Outside, Seattle was bright for once.

Emma held my hand.

Chloe held the other.

Leo slept against my chest.

I looked down at him.

The child who had begun as a secret was becoming simply my son.

And then my attorney called.

“Lauren, I need you to come in tomorrow.”

“Why?”

“We received the final federal report.”

“Is there something wrong?”

“No.”

She paused.

“It explains exactly how Richard financed the transfer.”

I tightened my grip on the phone.

“How?”

“He used a trust account.”

“Which trust?”

“The one established for Carter's children.”

I stopped walking.

That meant Richard had not merely funded the fraud.

He had used money intended for his grandchildren.

Money meant for Chloe and Emma.

The realization changed everything again.

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: The Money Richard Stole
