them.”

“Probably.”

“Did they take the samples?”

“We don't know.”

Nathan sat quietly in the back seat.

Then he spoke.

“Maybe they wanted a DNA test.”

Everyone turned.

He shrugged.

“If people don't know who belongs to who, DNA answers it.”

Daniel stared at him.

“You're right.”

Nathan looked out the window.

“That doesn't mean I want strangers testing me.”

“No one will.”

“Promise?”

Daniel hesitated.

Then said, “I'll make sure you know before anything happens.”

Nathan nodded.

It was the best promise Daniel could make.

Three hours later, we reached the Vermont property.

The house stood beyond a line of tall pines.

No lights.

No cars.

The gate was open.

Thomas stopped the vehicle.

“This isn't right.”

Daniel looked at him.

“What?”

“The property was supposed to be secured.”

We got out.

The front door stood slightly open.

Daniel stepped forward.

I caught his arm.

“Wait.”

He stopped.

A faint sound came from inside.

A child crying.

Nathan went rigid.

“That sounds like…”

Daniel's face drained of color.

We rushed inside.

The house was empty.

The crying continued.

Thomas followed the sound down a hallway.

A small television was playing in an upstairs room.

No child.

Only an old recording.

Then the screen flickered.

A video appeared.

Émilie.

Alive.

Pregnant.

Sitting in a chair.

My knees nearly gave out.

Daniel stared at the screen.

Nathan whispered, “Mom.”

Émilie looked directly into the camera.

“If you're watching this, then something went wrong.”

Her voice trembled.

“I need Mom to know that I never wanted her to carry this alone.”

I covered my mouth.

Émilie continued.

“Daniel, if you ever see this, I need you to listen before you blame yourself.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“My father believes we're connected by blood.”

The room went silent.

Émilie took a breath.

“He is wrong about some things.”

I looked at Daniel.

Then at the screen.

“But he is right about one thing.”

Émilie lowered her eyes.

“There is something about our families that I never understood.”

The video ended.

The screen went black.

Nathan whispered:

“What did she mean?”

Nobody answered.

Then Thomas found an envelope taped beneath the television.

He pulled it free.

There was one name written across it.

MOM.

I took it.

My daughter's handwriting.

Again.

Inside was a single photograph.

Émilie standing outside the Vermont house.

Beside her was Elaine Whitmore.

And in Elaine's arms was a newborn baby.

Two babies lay side by side in the photograph.

One was Nathan.

The other looked almost exactly like him.

On the back, Émilie had written:

I COULD NOT SAVE BOTH OF THEM FROM THE WHITMORES.

Nathan stared at the photograph.

Daniel stopped breathing.

Then, from somewhere behind us, a floorboard creaked.

We turned.

A door at the end of the hallway slowly opened.

A boy stood there.

Ten years old.

Dark hair.

Gray-blue eyes.

The same small crease beneath his chin.

Nathan whispered one word.

“Who are you?”

The boy looked at Daniel.

Then at me.

And said,

“My name is Ethan.”

<a
