This is Julian Hayes. I hope this is still the right number.

I stopped walking.

I hadn't given Julian my number.

Then I remembered the receipt.

My name was on it.

I typed back.

Yes. This is Marcus.

His response arrived almost immediately.

I wanted to thank you properly. My family is doing well. Lily keeps talking about the truck driver who stopped.

I smiled despite myself.

I'm glad you're all okay.

Another message appeared.

The SUV needed an alternator and a battery. We were lucky.

I stared at that word.

Lucky.

Yes, I wrote. You were.

He replied.

We were lucky you were there.

I didn't know what to say to that.

I put my phone away.

I thought that was the end of our conversation.

It wasn't.

Two days later, Julian called.

I answered while sitting in my cab during a break.

"Hello?"

"Marcus?"

"Yes."

"This is Julian."

"I remember."

He laughed softly.

"I hope I'm not catching you at a bad time."

"I'm between runs."

There was a pause.

"I called your company."

My stomach tightened.

"Why?"

"I wanted to make sure the company knew what you had done."

I sat up straighter.

"What did they say?"

"That's the strange part."

"What do you mean?"

"I spoke to someone in dispatch."

I already knew who he meant.

"Victor?"

"Yes."

I said nothing.

Julian continued.

"I told him about the storm. I told him you stayed with us. I told him you paid for the tow."

I rubbed my forehead.

"What did he say?"

"He said you had been disciplined for causing a delivery delay."

I looked through the windshield.

Julian's voice changed.

"Marcus, did you know that before I called?"

"Yes."

"Did your hours get reduced afterward?"

I didn't answer immediately.

"Yes."

"By how much?"

"Quite a bit."

He went quiet.

Then he asked, "Why?"

"I don't know."

"Do you trust that answer?"

I almost laughed.

"No."

Neither of us spoke for a few seconds.

Then Julian said something I wasn't expecting.

"There's something I should tell you."

"What?"

"The shipment you were carrying that night."

I looked at the dashboard.

"What about it?"

"It was ours."

I frowned.

"Hayes Tech?"

"Yes."

The name clicked into place.

Hayes Tech Solutions.

The logo printed on my shipping manifest.

The company whose inventory had been inside my trailer.

Julian continued.

"I’m the founder."

I sat there in silence.

"You were hauling my company's freight."

"You're the owner?"

"Yes."

I looked toward the dispatch building.

Suddenly Victor's behavior made less sense.

Julian didn't sound pleased.

"I've been trying to understand what happened."

"I don't want you getting involved because of me."

"I’m already involved."

"Julian—"

"Marcus, listen."

His voice was calm.

But there was steel beneath it.

"When I called Apex, I wasn't trying to cause trouble.
