close the door."

I did.

Victor pointed at the chair beside Julian.

"Sit."

I remained standing.

"I'd rather back.

"Of course."

That was the first moment I understood that the balance in the room had changed.

Victor didn't like being contradicted.

Especially not in his own office.

But he had backed down instantly.

Julian opened the leather folder.

"I owe you money."

"You don't."

"The tow."

"It was handled."

"By your credit card."

"I wasn't going to let you worry about a payment while chair.

Julian placed the tow receipt on the desk.

My full name was printed near the bottom.

"I found Apex through this."

"I figured."

"I called the company because I wanted to thank you formally."

Victor said, "And I explained the situation."

Julian turned his head.

"I wasn't finished."

Victor stopped.

Julian looked back at me.

"When I called, I asked whether your company had caused you any trouble because of the delay."

I already knew what came next.

"He told me you had been disciplined."

Victor leaned forward.

"There was a legitimate delivery issue."

Julian ignored him.

"Marcus, did you receive a formal warning?"

"Yes."

"For helping my family?"

"It was listed as an unauthorized delay."

Julian's expression hardened.

"And your hours?"

I answered quietly.

"Reduced."

"How much?"

I told him.

Julian opened the folder again.

He removed several pages.

"Before the incident, you averaged fifty-six hours."

I looked at the paper.

"That's right."

"After the warning?"

"Twenty-nine the first week."

"And twenty-four the second."

Victor said, "Scheduling isn't a disciplinary matter."

Julian looked at him.

"Interesting."

Victor crossed his arms.

"I manage dispatch."

"Apparently."

Julian turned another page.

"This is your company's dispatch log."

Victor's face tightened.

"Where did you get that?"

"I asked."

"From whom?"

"Corporate operations."

Victor stared at him.

I looked from one man to the other.

"Why would corporate operations give you my records?"

Julian closed the folder.

"Because I have a business relationship with Apex."

Victor gave a short laugh.

"That's an understatement."

Julian didn't smile.

"I own Hayes Tech Solutions."

I glanced at the folder.

The corporate logo was visible on the cover.

Hayes Tech Solutions.

It was the same company whose shipment had been in my trailer.

Julian continued.

"The freight you were hauling that night belonged to us."

I looked at Victor.

His face had gone still.

Julian's voice remained calm.

"Your company was transporting our inventory to Detroit."

Victor said, "We value the contract."

"I know."

Julian leaned back.

"That's why I was surprised to hear that one of your drivers had been punished after helping my family."

Victor shifted.

"He ignored a direct instruction."

"He stayed beside a disabled vehicle during dangerous weather."

"He delayed our customer's shipment."

"Which arrived sealed and undamaged."

Victor's eyes narrowed.

"You're making this personal."

Julian shook his head.

"No."

He tapped the folder.

"I'm making it contractual."

The room went silent.

Julian explained that Hayes Tech was one of Apex's major clients. The shipment I had carried that night was part of a larger distribution agreement.

He also explained something I hadn't known.

The receiving warehouse had reported that the delay was weather-related.

They had noted that several carriers had arrived late.

No complaint had been filed against Apex.

No penalty had been charged.

The shipment had been accepted without damage.

"Then why was I written up?" I asked.

Victor answered immediately.

"Because you failed to follow instructions."

Julian turned toward him.

"Did you know there was a child in the vehicle?"

Victor paused.

I watched him.

Finally he said, "Marcus mentioned a family."

"Did he mention a child?"

Victor didn't answer.

Julian looked at me.

"Did you tell him?"

"Yes."

Julian nodded.

Then he returned his attention to Victor.

"Did you instruct him to continue driving anyway?"

Victor's jaw moved.

"I told him to prioritize the delivery."

"Even after he told you a child was sitting in a disabled vehicle?"

"I expected him to use his judgment."

"You did."

Victor frowned.

"What is that supposed to mean?"

"It means Marcus made the judgment you refused to make."

Victor leaned forward.

"Look, Mr. Hayes, we run a freight operation. If every driver stopped whenever they saw someone on the roadside, nothing would arrive on time."

Julian's expression didn't change.

"That wasn't an ordinary roadside stop."

"It was a disabled vehicle."

"During a severe storm."

"On an interstate."

"With a seven-year-old child inside."

Victor opened his mouth.

Julian continued before he could speak.

"And your driver stayed with his freight while emergency services handled the situation."

Victor fell silent.

I looked at Julian.

"Why are you doing all this?"

He turned toward me.

"Because I wanted to repay a favor."

"You don't have to."

"Maybe not."

He smiled faintly.

"But I also have a responsibility to know how a company treats the people carrying my inventory."

That sentence stayed with me.

Victor looked irritated.

"I think we're losing sight of the issue."

"No," Julian said.

"I think we're finally looking directly at it."

He opened the folder again.

There were more papers.

One was my original delivery record.

Another was the warning.

Another showed my schedule.

Then Julian placed a fourth document on the desk.

I recognized it immediately.

My disciplinary statement.

Except something was wrong.

I had written my explanation in the space provided.

The copy in front of me contained an additional sentence.

Driver abandoned assigned delivery responsibilities despite direct management instruction.

I stared at it.

"I didn't write that."

Victor said nothing.

I picked up the paper.

My signature was at the bottom.

But I knew I hadn't signed that version.

"I never saw this."

Victor stood.

"That is the document in your personnel file."

"No."

I looked at him.

"I wrote my own explanation. That sentence wasn't there."

Julian watched Victor carefully.

"Are you saying Marcus is lying?"

Victor shook his head.

"I'm saying the document speaks for itself."

I looked closer.

The signature looked like mine.

Almost.

There was a small difference in the final stroke.

I had developed my signature over twenty years.

I knew exactly how it moved.

Someone had copied it.

My stomach tightened.

"I signed the acknowledgment," I said.

"Yes," Victor replied.

"I didn't sign this."

Victor's face remained expressionless.

Julian leaned toward the document.

"Who uploaded this?"

Victor didn't answer.

Julian looked at him.

"Who?"

"The personnel department handles records."

"Not according to the audit information."

Victor's eyes flickered.

I noticed it.

Julian noticed it too.

Before either of us could continue, the office door opened.

A woman in a navy suit stepped inside.

Two people from corporate HR followed her.

A security officer came in behind them.

Victor turned.

"What is this?"

The woman held up an identification badge.

"Rebecca Lane. Corporate compliance."

Victor stared at her.

She looked at the document in my hand.

"Is that Marcus Thorne's disciplinary warning?"

Victor said nothing.

Rebecca walked toward the desk.

"We need to discuss it."

Victor's voice hardened.

"On whose authority?"

Rebecca looked at Julian.

Then back at Victor.

"Regional management authorized the review."

Victor's eyes narrowed.

"Rachel?"

Rebecca nodded.

"Rachel Torres."

She opened her laptop.

"Mr. Vance, we found inconsistencies in Marcus's personnel record."

"There are no inconsistencies."

Rebecca turned the screen toward him.

"Then this should be easy to explain."

Victor didn't move.

She displayed two digital copies of the same warning.

One was the version I remembered.

The other contained the additional sentence.

My eyes went to the timestamps.

Rebecca pointed.

"These documents were uploaded separately."

Victor said nothing.

"The second version entered the system at 11:42 a.m."

"I wasn't in the office at that time."

Rebecca clicked again.

"Your security badge opened this office at 11:36."

Victor's face tightened.

"That doesn't prove anything."

"No."

Rebecca clicked again.

"Your company laptop authenticated at 11:39."

Another click.

"The altered document was uploaded three minutes later."

Victor stared at the screen.

Then at me.

I had never seen him look uncertain before.

Rebecca closed the laptop.

"We're not finished."

She turned toward the HR representative carrying a cardboard box.

"Bring in the other files."

The representative placed the box on Victor's desk.

There were folders inside.

Dozens of them.

Victor stared.

"What are those?"

"Personnel records."

"I know what they are."

Rebecca removed one.

"Then you should recognize the name."

She placed it on the desk.

Elliot Briggs.

Another.

Sandra Cole.

Another.

Darren Mills.

Driver after driver.

Some names I recognized.

Some I didn't.

Rebecca looked directly at Victor.

"We found thirty-eight files requiring review."

Victor's face lost its color.

Julian glanced toward me.

I understood then that the storm hadn't created this problem.

It had only given someone a reason to look.

Rebecca closed the first folder.

"Effective immediately, Victor Vance, you're being removed from dispatch duties while this investigation proceeds."

Victor stood.

"You can't do that."

Rebecca's expression remained calm.

"We already have."

Click here to continue reading: PART 4: The Paper With My Name on It Was Only the Beginning of What Corporate Found Buried Inside Victor’s Files

I expected another warning.
