Threats involving hours. Disciplinary actions after documented delays. Several employees claim their written explanations were changed after submission."

I felt something move inside me.

"Changed?"

Rebecca nodded.

"That's why we started looking at the records."

She pulled out another folder.

"Some drivers complained through the formal system."

"Did anyone investigate?" I asked.

"Not adequately."

That answer was blunt.

I appreciated it.

Rebecca didn't pretend the company had handled things perfectly.

She turned to Victor.

"We also found a pattern of complaints disappearing from the internal queue."

Victor immediately said, "I had nothing to do with that."

"We haven't said you did."

He stopped.

Rebecca looked at her notes.

"But several of the complaints were routed through your account before they disappeared."

Victor's face hardened.

"Anyone with access could have done that."

"That's possible."

She nodded.

"Which is why corporate security is reviewing access logs."

The security officer behind her stepped forward.

"Mr. Vance, I'll need your badge and company laptop."

Victor stared at him.

"No."

The officer didn't move.

Rebecca said quietly, "Please cooperate."

Victor looked toward Rachel's empty chair.

"Where is Rachel?"

"On her way."

"When?"

"Within the hour."

Victor shook his head.

"This is unbelievable."

I didn't say anything.

Part of me wanted to leave.

Another part wanted to stay.

For two weeks, I had wondered whether I had made the wrong choice.

Whether I should have driven past that SUV.

Whether I should have ignored the flashlight.

Whether I should have protected my job first.

Now I was watching the consequences of that night spread across an office.

And for the first time, I didn't feel ashamed of stopping.

I felt angry that anyone had expected me to regret it.

Julian walked over to me.

"Marcus."

"Yeah?"

"I need to ask you something."

"What?"

"That night, when you paid for the tow, did you expect anything in return?"

I shook my head.

"No."

"Not even reimbursement?"

"No."

"Why?"

I thought about it.

"Because your daughter was scared."

Julian nodded.

"That's what I thought."

He reached into his leather folder.

"I brought something."

He handed me a white envelope.

I looked at it.

"What is this?"

"Open it."

Inside was a check.

I looked at the amount.

"Julian."

"Please."

"This is too much."

"It covers the tow and something else."

"I don't want anything else."

"Then consider the rest a thank-you."

I shook my head.

"I can't accept this."

He smiled.

"Then don't look at the number."

I pulled out another piece of paper.

It was folded in half.

I opened it.

A child's drawing.

A blue semi-truck.

Black crayon lines filled the sky.

Two enormous yellow circles represented the headlights.

Above the truck were crooked block letters.

Dear Mr. Marcus,

Thank you for staying until the help truck came.

Mom said you were watching out for us in the dark.

I hope you got home safe.

Love, Lily.

I stared at the drawing.

For a few seconds, the office disappeared.

I could hear rain again.

I could see the little flashlight behind the SUV window.

I could see Lily's hand against the tow truck glass.

I folded the paper carefully.

"Tell her I did."

Julian smiled.

"I will."

The door opened.

Rachel Torres walked in.

She was carrying a thin black folder.

Her expression was serious.

She looked at Victor first.

Then Rebecca.

Then me.

"Marcus."

"Yes?"

"I'm sorry."

I didn't know what she meant.

She placed the folder on the desk.

"We should have caught this sooner."

Victor immediately stepped forward.

"Rachel, before you make any decisions—"

She held up one hand.

"Not yet."

He stopped.

Rachel looked at me.

"Your personnel record contains information that should never have been altered."

I nodded.

"Rebecca showed me."

"There's more."

My stomach tightened.

Rachel opened the folder.

"We found evidence that your original statement was replaced."

Victor said, "That's not proven."

Rachel ignored him.

"Your signed version remains in the system archive."

She turned a page.

"The altered version was then used to justify a reduction in your route assignments."

Victor looked at the floor.

Rachel continued.

"That's unacceptable."

I asked, "What happens now?"

"We remove the warning."

Victor looked up.

"Rachel—"

"Immediately."

She turned toward him.

"And we restore Marcus's full-time schedule."

Victor stared at her.

"You can't simply reverse a management decision."

"I can when the decision was based on an altered record."

The room fell quiet.

Rachel looked at me.

"I also want to review your route history personally."

"Why?"

"Because your case isn't the only one."

She glanced toward the boxes of driver files.

"We have enough complaints that we may be dealing with a broader management problem."

Julian nodded slowly.

Rachel looked at him.

"I understand you contacted corporate because Marcus was your driver."

"Yes."

"And I appreciate that."

Julian looked toward me.

"He stopped for my family."

Rachel nodded.

"Then we owe him more than a correction to his file."

She turned back toward the paperwork.

"Marcus, your warning will be removed entirely. Your hours will be restored. And until the investigation is complete, Victor will have no authority over your assignments."

Victor stared at her.

"You can't take me off dispatch based on one driver's complaint."

Rachel's expression hardened.

"It isn't one driver's complaint."

She gestured toward the boxes.

"It's thirty-eight files."

Victor didn't answer.

I looked at Julian.

He gave me a small nod.

I folded Lily's drawing and placed it carefully inside my jacket pocket.

I thought the worst part was over.

I was wrong.

Because Rachel closed the folder, looked directly at Victor, and said,

"We also found something in the dispatch records that has nothing to do with Marcus."

Victor's face changed.

Rachel paused.

"Several drivers were instructed to ignore mandatory weather restrictions."

The security officer moved closer.

Victor looked toward the door.

And suddenly, the man who had spent two weeks making me afraid of losing my job looked like a man who was afraid of losing something much bigger.

Click here to continue reading: PART 5: The Weather Reports Were Only the First Layer, and the Records Revealed Why So Many Drivers Had Been Too Afraid to Speak

Victor didn't sit down.
