her.

“No.”

My voice was quiet.

“You did that yourselves.”

She flinched.

The board members had been silent throughout the away from the existing ownership structure.”

Andrew's eyes narrowed.

“That was temporary.”

“Perhaps.”

Victor placed the agreement in it.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because it would have transferred control of assets you did not personally own.”

He stared at me.

“You knew.”

“I read the documents.”

“You thought I was trying to steal my own company?”

I almost smiled.

“You weren't.”

Andrew's face changed.

“You were trying to make it yours.”

He said nothing.

That silence was enough.

The board chair leaned back.

“Mr. Hale, until this matter is resolved, you will not have unilateral authority over the company's accounts.”

Andrew looked around the table.

“You can't do this.”

“We already have.”

My father closed his folder.

“The financing agreements contain protective provisions.”

Andrew looked at him.

“You planned this.”

“No.”

My father stood.

“You planned your own downfall.”

Andrew turned toward me.

His voice softened.

“Mariana.”

I hated that tone.

It was the voice he used when he needed something.

“I didn't mean for it to go this far.”

I looked at him.

“You slapped me.”

“I was angry.”

“You ordered me to kneel.”

“I was trying to—”

“You accused me of stealing.”

“I believed—”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“You believed what benefited you.”

He stopped.

I saw tears in his eyes.

For the first time, he looked frightened.

“I loved you.”

“I know.”

“Then why are you doing this?”

I stared at him.

“I am not doing this to you.”

I looked around the room.

“I am stopping you from doing it to me again.”

He lowered his head.

Nobody spoke.

The meeting ended without a vote.

Not because Andrew had won.

Because the decision had already moved beyond him.

By noon, the company's bank notified him that several accounts required additional authorization.

By two, the restructuring had been suspended.

By four, the legal department had begun preserving internal communications.

And at 6:40 p.m., Margaret called me.

I almost ignored the call.

Then I answered.

Her voice was different.

Smaller.

“Mariana.”

“Yes?”

“I need to ask you something.”

“What?”

“Are we being removed from the mansion?”

I looked out my office window.

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“Thirty days.”

Silence.

Then she said something I never expected.

“I am sorry.”

I closed my eyes.

“For what?”

“For believing you were beneath us.”

I waited.

She continued.

“I spent years measuring people by what they owned.”

Her voice cracked.

“And I never noticed who was actually keeping us alive.”

I did not forgive her.

Not yet.

But I heard her.

That night, Andrew sent me a message.

Can we talk?

I stared at it.

Then another appeared.

Please.

I did not answer.

A third message arrived.

I found something in my mother's papers.

Something about your father.

I froze.

My father.

What could Andrew's mother have known about him?

I called Victor.

He answered immediately.

“What happened?”

“I received a message from Andrew.”

“What did he say?”

I read it.

There was a pause.

Then Victor's voice changed.

“Do not meet him alone.”

“Why?”

“I don't know.”

I looked at the message again.

Something about your father.

For the first time since leaving the mansion, uncertainty returned.

Not fear.

Something worse.

A question.

What had Andrew found?

And why had he waited until everything began collapsing to tell me?

<a
