This was ragged and frightened, the kind that seemed to come from somewhere deeper than the throat. I stood with one hand still on the brass handle, listening to the sound travel through the enormous house.

I had expected silence.

My flight from Chicago had landed almost a day earlier than planned, and I had decided not to tell anyone. I had spent the entire trip imagining my wife’s face when she saw me. She was seven months pregnant, tired more often than she admitted, and increasingly uncomfortable as our son grew inside her. I had bought flowers at the airport and tucked a small box of chocolate beneath them.

I had imagined walking upstairs, finding her asleep, and whispering her name until she woke.

Instead, another sound reached me.

A wet scraping noise.

Then my wife’s voice.

“Please. I’m trying.”

My stomach tightened.

I dropped the flowers.

They struck the marble floor, scattering white petals across the entryway.

I followed the crying toward the kitchen.

When I reached the doorway, I stopped so abruptly that my shoulder struck the wall.

My wife, Lily, was on her knees.

She was wearing a pale blue maternity dress, the hem darkened with water. Her hair had fallen loose around her face. One hand was braced against the floor while the other dragged a rough cloth repeatedly over her forearm.

Her skin was already red.

In some places, it had broken.

She kept scrubbing.

Again.

Again.

Again.

Three members of the household staff stood several feet away.

None of them moved.

The head housekeeper, Mrs. Carter, had her hands clasped in front of her. The younger maid beside her stared at the floor. Our temporary caregiver, Ashley, leaned against the kitchen counter with her arms folded.

Nobody looked surprised to see Lily like that.

That was what frightened me most.

“Lily?”

The cloth stopped.

She lifted her head.

For one second, relief appeared in her eyes.

Then fear replaced it.

She scrambled backward.

“No.”

I stepped toward her.

“Lily, it’s me.”

She pressed both hands over her stomach.

“No, please. I’ll do it. I’ll clean it again.”

I crouched in front of her.

“What happened?”

She shook her head so violently that loose strands of hair stuck to her wet cheeks.

“I’m sorry.”

“You don’t have to apologize.”

“I made a mess.”

I looked around the kitchen.

There was no mess.

The marble counters were spotless. The floor had already been mopped. The dishes were stacked neatly beside the sink.

“What mess?”

She looked at her arm.

“There.”

I gently reached toward her wrist.

She recoiled so violently that her shoulder hit the cabinet.

“Don’t touch me.”

The words came out as a whisper.

I froze.

Lily had never been afraid of me.

Not once in the six years I had known her.

I turned slowly toward the staff.

“What happened?”

Nobody answered.

Ashley looked at Mrs. Carter.

Mrs. Carter looked at the floor.

I stood.

“Who told my wife to scrub herself?”

Still nothing.

My voice hardened.

“I asked a question.”

Ashley finally spoke.

“She was having one of her episodes.”

I looked at her.

“Her what?”

“She became upset.”

“She’s seven months pregnant and her arms are bleeding.”

Ashley shrugged.

“She gets emotional.”

Something cold settled inside my chest.

I had spent months telling myself Lily was simply struggling with pregnancy.

The fatigue.

The headaches.

The apologies.

The way she had stopped complaining about food she disliked because she didn’t want to “make trouble.”

I had noticed all of it.

I had simply failed to understand what it meant.

I turned back to my wife.

“Who made you do this?”

Lily’s lips trembled.

“Nobody.”

I knew immediately that she was lying.

Not because I knew everything about her.

Because I knew how she lied.

Lily lied by looking down.

She lied when she was trying to protect someone.

She lied when she was terrified that telling the truth would make things worse.

I knelt beside her again.

“Look at me.”

She hesitated.

Then she raised her eyes.

“Did someone tell you that you were dirty?”

Her breath caught.

That was enough.

I felt my hands curl into fists.

Ashley pushed away from the counter.

“This is getting dramatic.”

I stood.

“You need to leave the room.”

“I’m employed here.”

“Not by me anymore.”

Her face changed.

“You can’t dismiss me because your wife is unstable.”

Lily flinched at the word.

I saw it.

So did Mrs. Carter.

I turned toward Ashley.

“Say that again.”

She swallowed.

“She’s been acting irrationally for weeks.”

I stepped closer.

“You knew.”

Ashley looked away.

“You knew she was being treated like this.”

“I was trying to help.”

“By watching?”

“I didn’t know what to do.”

“You could have called me.”

“You were always traveling.”

The words landed harder than I expected.

Because there was truth in them.

I had been traveling constantly.

I had told Lily it was temporary.

I had told her the company needed me.

I had told her we’d have plenty of time together after the baby was born.

I had been proud of myself for providing everything we needed.

A beautiful house.

A nursery.

Private medical care.

A comfortable life.

And while I was congratulating myself for giving her security, she had apparently been learning how to survive inside my house.

I looked at the other staff.

“Everyone out.”

Nobody moved.

“Now.”

Mrs. Carter finally nodded.

The others followed her toward the hallway.

Ashley lingered.

I looked at her.

She left.

When the kitchen door closed, the room became strangely quiet.

I returned to Lily.

She was staring at the cloth in her hand.

I gently took it from her.

She didn’t resist.

“Why were you scrubbing?”

Her fingers tightened around the fabric of her dress.

“Mrs. Carter said I smelled.”

My jaw tightened.

“What?”

“She said pregnant women become unpleasant.”

“She said that?”

Lily nodded.

“Then Ashley told me the staff were complaining.”

I closed my eyes briefly.

“Complaining about what?”

“My skin.”

I opened them.

Lily swallowed.

“They said I was making the house dirty.”

My heart sank.

She looked toward the door.

“They said if I wanted to live here, I had to respect the house.”

I glanced around the kitchen.

The enormous room had suddenly become unfamiliar.

“Who told you to scrub your arms?”

“Ashley.”

My chest tightened.

“What did she say?”

Lily stared at the floor.

“She said if I couldn’t keep myself clean, people would think I was disgusting.”

I sat beside her.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then I noticed something I had missed.

There were small bruises along her wrist.

Not from scrubbing.

Finger-shaped.

I touched the air above them without making contact.

“Lily.”

She pulled her sleeve down.

“It’s nothing.”

“Who grabbed you?”

She shook her head.

“Please don’t make trouble.”

“I am already in trouble.”

She looked at me.

“What do you mean?”

I took a slow breath.

“I mean I should have seen this.”

Her eyes filled.

“You weren’t here.”

“That isn’t an excuse.”

“You had work.”

“That isn’t an excuse either.”

She stared at me as though she had never heard me speak like that.

I reached for her hand.

This time she allowed me to hold it.

“I thought you were okay,” I said.

“I wanted you to think I was.”

“Why?”

She looked toward the hallway again.

Then she lowered her voice.

“Because every time I complained, someone told me I was imagining things.”

My stomach turned.

“Who?”

She didn’t answer.

“Lily.”

Her eyes moved toward the ceiling.

Then toward the doorway.

Finally she whispered one name.

“Your mother.”

I went completely still.

My mother, Margaret, had been staying at the house for nearly two months.

She had insisted she was there to help Lily through the final stage of pregnancy.

I had been grateful.

I had even thanked her for coming.

My mother had smiled and told me that family was supposed to take care of family.

I suddenly remembered something.

Two weeks earlier, Lily had called me late at night.

She had sounded exhausted.

I had asked what was wrong.

She had said, “Nothing. Your mother just thinks I should be more careful.”

I had laughed.

“Mom worries too much.”

Lily had gone quiet.

I should have asked more.

Instead, I had told her to sleep.

Now I hated myself for it.

“Tell me everything,” I said.

She shook her head.

“I can’t.”

“You can.”

“No.”

“Why?”

Her fingers tightened around mine.

“Because if she knows I told you, she’ll take my baby.”

The room seemed to tilt.

“She can’t do that.”

Lily’s eyes filled with tears.

“You don’t know what she has been saying.”

“What has she been saying?”

“That you don’t really want this child.”

I stared at her.

“She says you only married me because I was pregnant.”

“That isn’t true.”

“I know.”

“Then why would you believe her?”

“I don’t.”

“Then why are you afraid?”

Lily’s face crumpled.

“Because she told me she has doctors who will say I’m unstable.”

I felt something inside me break.

“She threatened you with that?”

Lily nodded.

“And she said if I told you, she’d make sure everyone believed I was having some kind of pregnancy breakdown.”

I looked toward the closed kitchen door.

My mother.

My wife.

My unborn son.

And a house full of people who had apparently watched this happen.

I helped Lily stand.

She swayed.

I caught her.

She immediately apologized.

“Stop saying sorry.”

She looked at me.

“You’re my wife.”

Her lips trembled.

“I know.”

“No. I don’t think you do.”

I touched her cheek.

“You don’t have to earn the right to be safe here.”

She closed her eyes.

A tear rolled down her face.

Then, suddenly, the baby moved.

Lily’s hand went to her stomach.

I placed my palm beside hers.

A small kick pressed against my hand.

For the first time since I had entered the house, Lily smiled.

It lasted only a second.

Then footsteps sounded in the hallway.

Lily stiffened.

I looked toward the door.

My mother entered.

She was wearing a cream blouse, tailored trousers, and the expression of a woman who had just walked into a perfectly ordinary afternoon.

She stopped when she saw me.

“Oh.”

I stood between her and Lily.

“Mom.”

Her smile disappeared.

“You’re home early.”

“Yes.”

She glanced at the flowers scattered in the entryway beyond the kitchen.

Then at Lily’s red arms.

Then at the cloth on the floor.

Something flickered across her face.

Not concern.

Calculation.

“I see you’ve been upsetting yourself again,” she said.

Lily immediately stepped behind me.

My mother noticed.

She sighed.

“Daniel, we need to talk.”

I stared at her.

“No.”

Her eyebrows lifted.

“Excuse me?”

“You need to explain why my pregnant wife was on the floor scrubbing her skin while your staff watched.”

My mother’s face remained calm.

“Because your wife has become extremely difficult.”

Lily’s hand tightened around my arm.

I looked at my mother.

“That’s your explanation?”

“She has been refusing help.”

“Help?”

“Yes.”

My mother gestured toward Lily’s arms.

“She has been scratching herself for weeks.
