The reception desk was still there beneath a layer of gray dust. A brass plaque bearing the Whitmore name remained mounted on the wall.

Lily touched it.

“My name used to be on the paperwork for this place.”

“It still is,” Michael said.

She looked at him.

“What?”

“The trust transferred ownership years ago.”

I stared at the plaque.

My mother had spent decades trying to control Lily while the very property she feared losing had legally belonged to her all along.

We moved toward the executive floor.

The elevator no longer worked, so we climbed the stairs.

On the third floor, a corridor stretched into darkness.

At the far end stood a pair of double doors.

My mother had described the old executive library.

This was it.

Michael unlocked the first door using a key from the property records.

The library was almost untouched.

A massive desk stood near the window.

Bookshelves covered three walls.

And behind the desk was a portrait of my grandfather.

Lily walked toward it.

“He looks angry.”

“He always did.”

She looked at me.

“You remember him?”

“Barely.”

I moved toward the desk.

The drawers were empty.

The bookshelves were dusty.

Nothing appeared unusual.

Then Lily noticed a small indentation in the floor beneath the desk.

“There.”

We moved the desk.

A narrow metal plate was set into the wood.

Michael crouched.

“There may be a mechanism.”

He examined it carefully.

Then he found a hidden latch.

The floor panel opened.

Beneath it was a narrow staircase.

Lily gripped my arm.

“That's where he meant.”

I nodded.

We descended.

The room beneath the library was smaller than I expected.

There was a chair.

A narrow bed.

A washbasin.

And a locked cabinet.

My stomach turned.

“This wasn't an archive.”

“No,” Michael said.

“It was a hiding place.”

Exactly as Thomas had warned.

Lily stepped into the room.

She looked around slowly.

“Someone lived here.”

On the wall were faint pencil marks.

Small lines.

Dozens of them.

Someone had counted days.

Lily touched one.

“Why would anyone stay here?”

I didn't answer.

Michael opened the cabinet.

Inside were old clothes.

A blanket.

A metal cup.

And several envelopes.

One had a date.

Twenty-four years ago.

My heart began pounding.

I reached for it.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

Maryanne.

Lily saw the name.

“That's my mother's handwriting.”

She took the envelope.

Her hands shook as she opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

Maryanne stood in the same room.

She was thinner than the woman in the photograph we'd seen at Eleanor's.

And she was holding her stomach.

She had been pregnant.

Lily stared.

“She was pregnant with me.”

“Yes.”

Then Lily turned the photograph over.

Written on the back:

If I cannot leave, this is where I kept the truth.

I looked around the room.

“Then she was here.”

Michael opened another envelope.

Inside was a medical report.

Maryanne had been treated for injuries.

The date was three days after the warehouse incident.

“She survived,” Lily whispered.

I nodded.

The relief on her face lasted only seconds.

Then she saw the next line.

Patient requested no police contact.

Lily looked at me.

“Why?”

Before I could answer, we heard footsteps above us.

Michael immediately raised a hand.

Everyone froze.

The footsteps stopped.

Then came the sound of a door closing.

Someone was in the building.

We turned off the light.

I moved toward the stairs.

Michael whispered, “Don't.”

But I was already climbing.

At the top, the library was empty.

The front door stood open.

A cold draft moved through the corridor.

Then I noticed something on the desk.

A single envelope.

Fresh.

No dust.

Someone had placed it there moments ago.

My name was written across the front.

I opened it.

Inside was a photograph of Lily.

It had been taken that morning.

Outside the bank.

Someone had been watching us.

On the back was a message.

You are looking in the wrong place.

Lily came up behind me.

“What is it?”

I handed her the photograph.

Her face went pale.

Michael took it.

“We're leaving.”

We returned to the hidden room.

There was something else I had missed.

A loose brick behind the washbasin.

I pulled it free.

Inside was a small recorder.

Old.

But preserved.

I pressed the button.

Static filled the room.

Then Maryanne's voice.

“If Lily ever hears this, it means I failed to return.”

Lily covered her mouth.

Maryanne continued.

“I need you to know that I never abandoned you.”

Lily began crying.

“I was forced to leave.”

The recording crackled.

“Richard found out about the trust. He believed controlling me would eventually give him access to Lily.”

My hands tightened.

“I refused.”

Maryanne's voice became weaker.

“Margaret helped me once. I trusted her. That was my mistake.”

Lily looked at me.

The recording continued.

“She promised to protect my daughter.”

Then silence.

A few seconds later, Maryanne spoke again.

“She did protect you.”

Lily's face changed.

“But she also became afraid of you.”

The words sounded strange.

“Afraid of me?” Lily whispered.

Maryanne explained.

“When Lily becomes an adult, the trust becomes hers. Richard knows this. Margaret knows this. If either of them controls her, they control the money.”

I looked at Michael.

That confirmed everything.

Then Maryanne said something none of us expected.

“There is another reason I cannot return.”

Lily leaned closer.

“I have been diagnosed with a condition that may become dangerous.”

The room went silent.

“She didn't leave because she didn't love me.”

“No,” I whispered.

The recording continued.

“If I return, Richard will use my illness against me.”

Lily's tears fell silently.

Maryanne's voice broke.

“I don't want my daughter raised by fear.”

Then came the final part.

“I have arranged for someone to care for me until the danger passes.”

A man's voice appeared faintly in the background.

Thomas.

He said:

“You should tell her.”

Maryanne answered:

“Not until she's safe.”

Then the recording ended.

Lily stood completely still.

“She was alive.”

“Yes.”

“She was sick.”

“Yes.”

“And Thomas knew.”

“Yes.”

She looked at me.

“Why didn't he tell me?”

“I don't know.”

A noise came from the corridor.

This time it was closer.

The door to the library opened.

A man stepped inside.

He was older, wearing a dark coat.

He looked directly at us.

“Daniel?”

I stepped forward.

“Who are you?”

He raised his hands.

“My name is Arthur Vale.”

Michael moved between us.

Arthur looked at Lily.

“I knew your mother.”

Lily stared at him.

“Where is she?”

Arthur's face tightened.

“She died.”

The room seemed to lose all sound.

“When?”

“Eight years ago.”

Lily shook her head.

“No.”

Arthur's voice softened.

“She asked me to wait.”

“Wait for what?”

“For you to be old enough to know the truth.”

Lily's knees nearly gave way.

I caught her.

Arthur looked at the photograph in my hand.

“Someone has been following you.”

“Who?”

He looked toward the door.

“Your mother's fear was justified.”

“Tell me who.”

Arthur hesitated.

Then said:

“Charles's son.”

I frowned.

“My mother's brother had a son?”

“Yes.”

“Where is he?”

Arthur looked at Michael.

“He works for the same people Charles worked for.”

My stomach tightened.

“Richard's old associates?”

Arthur nodded.

“And they believe Lily's trust still contains something they can take.”

Lily wiped her tears.

“What?”

Arthur looked at her.

“The original ownership ledger.”

I stared.

“What ledger?”

“The one that proves who really owned Grand Harbor.”

Michael stepped forward.

“Where is it?”

Arthur looked toward the hidden room.

“Your mother never kept it here.”

“Then where?”

Arthur gave a tired smile.

“She trusted the wrong person.”

“Who?”

“Margaret.”

I felt anger rise again.

Arthur continued.

“Your mother gave the ledger to Margaret for safekeeping.”

I stared at him.

“And Margaret still has it?”

“No.”

“Then where is it?”

Arthur's expression changed.

“She gave it to someone else.”

“Who?”

Arthur looked at Lily.

“Your mother.”

Lily frowned.

“But she's dead.”

Arthur nodded.

“She hid it before she died.”

“Where?”

Arthur reached into his coat.

He removed a small brass key.

“The answer is in the house where you grew up.”

Lily stared at the key.

“Our house?”

Arthur nodded.

“Your mother left one final message there.”

Then he looked at me.

“And Daniel?”

“Yes?”

“She didn't leave it for Lily alone.”

He placed the
