paused.

“I don't ever want my children to think Grandma's love means she has to give up her own life.”

My throat tightened.

“Thank you.”

“I mean it, Mom.”

We stayed quiet for a moment.

Then I said, “You know, you can still ask me for help.”

“I know.”

“I might say yes.”

“I know.”

“I might say no.”

“I know.”

“And either answer can still mean I love you.”

“I know.”

We both laughed.

That was the conversation I had hoped for without realizing it.

Not an apology.

Not guilt.

Understanding.

After we hung up, I walked to the mantel.

Charles's photograph was still there.

Beside it sat the Portuguese tile.

Next to that was the crooked bowl.

I thought about how much had changed since the morning four children and a red folder appeared at my door.

The children had never been the problem.

They had simply been the people standing in the middle of an adult mistake.

The real issue had been invisible.

It was the assumption that the woman who had always said yes could never say no.

That assumption had nearly cost me a trip I had waited years to take.

It had also shown me something I needed to confront about myself.

I had trained people to expect my availability.

Every time I canceled something without complaint, I taught them that my plans mattered less.

Every time I said yes while secretly wishing I could say no, I reinforced the same lesson.

Changing that pattern required more than asking them to behave differently.

I had to behave differently too.

I picked up the Portuguese tile.

The swallow painted across it seemed almost weightless.

I remembered buying it in that little shop, standing among shelves of blue and white ceramics while sunlight spilled through the doorway.

I had felt guilty that day.

Guilty for enjoying myself.

Guilty for leaving.

Guilty for choosing something that belonged only to me.

I no longer felt guilty.

I felt grateful.

Not because Caleb and Tori had made a mistake.

I would never be grateful for that.

I was grateful because the mistake forced all of us to confront a habit that had been quietly growing for years.

The next morning, I called a travel club.

The woman on the phone asked what destination I had in mind.

“I don't know yet,” I said.

“Do you have a date?”

“Not yet.”

“Any preferences?”

I looked around my kitchen.

“Somewhere I've never been.”

She laughed.

“That gives us plenty of choices.”

After the call ended, I opened a notebook.

At the top of the first page, I wrote:

Places I Want to See.

I began making a list.

Not places Charles and I had promised to visit.

Not places someone else wanted to go.

Places I wanted to see.

That distinction felt surprisingly powerful.

I wrote for nearly an hour.

Then I closed the notebook.

My life wasn't finished.

It wasn't something I needed to protect from my family.

It was something I needed to participate in.

I could be a mother.

A grandmother.

A widow.

A friend.

A student.

A traveler.

A woman who made crooked bowls.

All of those identities could exist at once.

None had to erase the others.

And when my phone buzzed that afternoon, I smiled before even reading the message.

It was Maggie.

Grandma, are you coming Saturday?

I typed back.

If your parents ask me and I'm free, I will.

Three dots appeared.

Then:

Okay. I love you.

I smiled.

I love you too.

I set the phone down.

For the first time, that answer felt complete.

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: Myrna’s New Travel Notebook Drew Her Family Closer, Until One Unexpected Conversation Revealed How Much the Children Had Learned From Japan

The test came on a rainy Thursday evening.
