It was the response to the preservation request Mara had submitted to the photo-sharing service, containing the historical account activity we had been waiting for since the first hearing.

I did not open the attachment.

Instead, I forwarded the email to Mara and waited for her instructions. The records had been obtained through the proper process, and I wanted them reviewed carefully before drawing conclusions that could affect the case.

She called twelve minutes later.

“I'm opening the file now,” she said. “Give me a moment.”

I stood beside the kitchen counter, listening to the refrigerator hum. Through the window, the morning looked colorless, with low clouds hanging over the houses across the street. Eli was still asleep upstairs.

Mara finally spoke.

“The records identify the tablet registered to your account. They also show a series of downloads and exports during the period we identified.”

“Can they tell who used it?”

“Not from every entry. But the account activity can be compared with the security footage and the messages Grant supplied. There are also records of a particular album being exported shortly after the May 12 visit.”

I gripped the counter.

“Which album?”

“The one containing the photographs submitted with the report.”

For several seconds, I could not speak.

The album was private. It contained photographs I had taken of Eli during ordinary family moments, including the pictures of his bicycle accident, his scraped elbow, and the bruise near his shoulder. I had shared them with a small group of relatives because I wanted them to feel included in his life.

I had never imagined that someone would collect those pictures and present them as evidence that I was hurting him.

Mara continued.

“The service cannot establish the identity of the person holding the device at every moment. However, the export dates correspond with the period when Monica entered your house. We also have her message to Grant stating that she had found what she needed.”

I closed my eyes.

It was the connection we had been searching for, but I understood that it was not the same as a complete confession. The records showed what had happened to the photographs. The security footage showed Monica entering my house. The message provided context. The court would still need to consider the evidence as a whole.

“Can we use it at the hearing?” I asked.

“We can request permission to introduce it, subject to authentication and the court's review. I'll prepare the application.”

After we ended the call, I went upstairs to check on Eli. He was asleep on his side, one arm wrapped around the stuffed dinosaur he had insisted on bringing to the aquarium. His hair stood up at the back, and his blanket had slipped onto the floor.

I picked it up and covered him.

The evidence had become clearer, but my feelings had not become simpler. I was angry with Monica, frightened by what she had done, and ashamed that I had trusted her with access to parts of our lives that she had apparently decided to use against me.

I was also thinking about Owen.

Whatever his mother had done, he remained a child caught inside the same family conflict. I did not want the court proceedings to turn his experiences into a public spectacle or make him feel responsible for what happened to Eli.

When I returned downstairs, I found a message from Grant.

He had received notice that the financial records and his messages might be considered at the next hearing. He was willing to testify again and answer questions about his conversations with Monica.

I thanked him and told him that Mara would coordinate the arrangements.

By nine, Mara had prepared a supplemental filing. She included the relevant account records, the security footage, the messages, and a chronology showing how the photographs had been exported before they appeared in the custody petition.

She also requested that the court examine the circumstances in which the images had been obtained and the effect of those circumstances on the petitioner's credibility.

At noon, Simone Price filed an objection.

She argued that the account records did not conclusively establish that Monica had operated the tablet, that the photographs could have been shared through other means, and that the custody dispute should focus on Eli's welfare rather than on disagreements among adults.

Mara read the objection and shook her head.

“Some of those points are fair questions. We'll answer them with the evidence we have. But the court cannot ignore how the allegations were assembled if the reliability of those allegations is disputed.”

The hearing was scheduled for the following Wednesday. Judge Shaw agreed to review the supplemental material before deciding which portions could be presented.

Over the weekend, I tried to restore some normality to Eli's life.

We went to the aquarium as promised. He pressed both hands against the glass when a stingray glided over his head and insisted that a large sea turtle looked like the dinosaur in his bedroom. I bought him a small toy shark from the gift shop, and he carried it through the parking lot as though he had discovered a new species.

For two hours, I managed to forget the folders.

Then my phone vibrated.

It was my mother.

She wanted to know whether the new records had arrived. I told her that they had, but I did not share the details. She asked whether Monica was going to lose the case.

“I don't know,” I said. “The judge will decide after reviewing the evidence.”

My mother was quiet.

“I keep thinking about what I signed,” she admitted. “I keep seeing your face when you asked whether I had read the statement.”

I looked at Eli, who was trying to persuade a seagull to examine his toy shark.

“You cannot change what happened,” I told her. “You can decide what you do next.”

She asked whether she could see Eli.

I said that I needed time. Until the case was resolved, I was not comfortable allowing visits that might expose him to further conflict or pressure. I also reminded her that any future contact would need to respect the boundaries I had established.

She did not argue.

That evening, Mara called to discuss the next hearing.

“The judge will probably focus on three issues,” she said. “Whether Eli is safe with you, whether Monica is an appropriate alternative caregiver, and whether the evidence submitted against you is reliable. We should prepare for questions about your work schedule, your husband's death, and the childcare incident Tessa described.”

I had expected that.

“What about the photographs?”

“We'll present the records in sequence. The original images, the cropped versions, the access history, and the message to Grant. We need to show the judge why the context matters without claiming that any single record proves everything.”

She also wanted me to be prepared for a difficult question: why I had allowed Monica to retain a key to my house.

I had asked myself the same thing.

Monica had been given the key years earlier, when Aaron and I lived nearby and trusted her to check on the house during short trips. After Aaron died, I had changed the locks but later gave her a new key when she helped me arrange repairs. I had believed that the old trust between us still meant something.

I explained this to Mara.

“That's understandable,” she said. “You were relying on a longstanding family relationship. The relevant issue is whether she had permission to enter on May 12.”

“She didn't.”

“Then answer that directly. You don't need to defend every decision you made before you knew what she was doing.”

On Tuesday morning, Monica's attorney requested a meeting to discuss a possible resolution.

Mara asked me whether I would consider an agreement under which Monica withdrew her petition, acknowledged that Eli would remain in my care, and accepted restrictions on contact while the agency completed its investigation.

I agreed to consider it.

The proposal arrived that afternoon.

Monica would withdraw the emergency custody request, but she wanted the court to leave open the possibility of future visitation and family involvement. She would not be required to acknowledge that the photographs had been obtained improperly or that the allegations were inaccurate.

Mara explained the implications.

“If she withdraws, we may avoid further litigation over temporary custody. But the agency investigation and the questions about the evidence may continue. We need to decide whether accepting this proposal protects Eli adequately.”

I considered it carefully.

I did not need Monica to confess to every wrongdoing in order to protect my son. But I did not want her to withdraw the petition, avoid scrutiny, and then repeat the same accusations months later.

“I want the court to address the reliability of the allegations,” I said. “And I want the boundaries around Eli's contact with her to be clear.”

Mara communicated my position.

Monica rejected it.

Her response was brief: she would not agree to restrictions that implied she had done anything wrong.

That evening, Grant sent Mara a final set of messages he had found in an old backup. He had not realized they were relevant until he reviewed the dates.

The messages were between Monica and Tessa.

In one, Monica asked whether Tessa still had the statement she had prepared about the night I supposedly returned after midnight. Tessa replied that she did.

In another, Monica told her to keep the account simple and not to get distracted by details about the road closures.

The messages did not explicitly state that Monica had paid Tessa to lie. They did, however, show that the two had discussed the testimony before it was presented, and that Monica knew the account conflicted with details that could be verified.

Mara reviewed the messages and prepared an additional submission.

At 8:45 that evening, she called me.

“This is significant,” she said. “We'll ask the judge to admit it, subject to the necessary authentication. If the messages are accepted, they may affect how the court evaluates Tessa's testimony and Monica's role in preparing the petition.”

I sat at the kitchen table with the three folders in front of me.

The first documented Eli's life.

The second documented the allegations against me.

The third documented the growing evidence that those allegations had been assembled through selective photographs, coordinated statements, and private inquiries about my son's future.

I had started the process believing that I needed to prove I was a good mother.

Now I understood that I also needed to establish why the court should not accept an accusation merely because several people repeated it.

On Wednesday morning, I arrived at the courthouse with Mara.

Monica was already there. She wore the same cream-colored jacket she had worn at the first hearing, but the confident smile was gone. She sat beside Simone, reading a document with her lips pressed together.

When she saw me, she looked at the folders.

Then she looked away.

Judge Shaw entered at nine.

She announced that she had reviewed the supplemental filings and would hear arguments concerning the account records, the messages, and the proposed placement. She reminded everyone that the proceedings concerned a child's welfare, not the personal vindication of either adult.

Mara began by presenting the photographs in their original context. She explained the medical records, the dates of the injuries, and the way the submitted copies had been cropped.

Then she presented the security footage and the account-access history.

Simone challenged the interpretation, arguing that the records did not conclusively identify Monica as the person who operated the tablet.

Judge Shaw acknowledged the limitation.

“The court will not infer more than the evidence establishes,” she said. “But the timing and surrounding communications are relevant.”

Mara then asked permission to present the messages between Monica and Tessa.

The judge reviewed them privately before allowing the relevant portions to be introduced.

As the messages appeared on the screen, Tessa's expression changed.

Monica turned toward Simone and whispered urgently.

For the first time, I saw something close to fear in my sister's face.

The judge read the exchange again, then looked directly at Monica.

“Ms. Mercer, did you discuss the substance of Ms. Reed's statement with her before she testified?”

Monica's answer came slowly.

“Yes.”

“Did you know that the time she described differed from the documented time of Ms. Bennett's return?”

Monica looked down.

“I knew there had been a delay.”

“Did you tell Ms. Reed to omit the road closures and the messages documenting that delay?”

Monica did not answer immediately.

Simone stood and requested a brief recess.

Judge Shaw granted it.

As the attorneys left the courtroom, Monica turned toward me. Her eyes were bright, but she was no longer trying to appear concerned for Eli.

“You have no idea what you've done,” she whispered.

I looked at her.

“I have spent weeks showing the court what happened.”

“You think this is only about the photographs?”

The question stopped me.

Before I could respond, Simone called her back into the corridor.

Monica followed, leaving me with the uneasy feeling that the evidence had uncovered the method behind her plan without yet revealing everything she believed she was protecting.

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: My Sister Finally Admitted She Had Hidden the Truth, but Her Explanation Revealed How Far She Was Willing to Go to Keep Her Own Life From Falling Apart

The email arrived at 6:18 on Friday morning, before I had finished making coffee.
