I carried the original in a sealed envelope, careful not to fold or mark it. I had not questioned my son about it, although resisting the urge had been difficult. The thought that he might have been drawn into a financial arrangement without understanding its purpose made me feel both angry and protective.

Dana examined the document before asking me to explain where I had found it. I described the envelope on Marcus's desk and the note written in Logan's handwriting. She photographed the pages, compared the account information with the records already under review, and made several calls.

After nearly an hour, she put the document down.

"This appears to be connected to the same group of accounts we've been examining," she said. "But we still need to establish why Marcus received it and whether it was ever used."

"Could he have signed something without understanding it?"

"It's possible, but we cannot assume that. The document you found does not establish that he signed anything. We need the institution's records."

I felt ashamed of how quickly my imagination had moved from concern to suspicion. Marcus was a teenager who trusted his father. If Logan had handed him paperwork and said it was routine, Marcus might not have thought to ask questions.

Dana explained that she had requested confirmation of the account's current status and the history of any related transactions. The institution would need to identify who had initiated them, what authorizations had been supplied, and whether those authorizations satisfied its requirements.

"Your father's arrangements were intended to protect the children's interests," she said. "We need to make sure those protections were followed. That is the immediate concern."

I nodded.

I wanted to believe that the records would reveal an innocent explanation. Perhaps the transfer had been properly authorized. Perhaps the signatures belonged to someone who had authority to act. Perhaps I had misunderstood the documents because I had never studied them carefully.

But I could not make those possibilities into facts simply because they were easier to bear.

On the drive home, I stopped at a grocery store and bought food for the children's return. I selected the cereal Lily liked, the bread Marcus preferred, and ingredients for a dinner we often made together. I wanted to give them something familiar to return to.

As I loaded the bags into the car, I remembered how Marcus used to run into the kitchen after school and ask what was for dinner before he had even removed his backpack. Lily would follow him, usually carrying a book, and sit at the island to tell me about something that had happened in class.

Those ordinary evenings had once seemed endless.

Now I found myself trying to preserve them deliberately.

That evening, Logan's mother called.

She began by asking whether I had considered how much distress the dispute was causing her son. She said the family had been shocked by my decision to change the locks and that Logan was struggling to enjoy the wedding because he could not stop thinking about the house.

I listened without interrupting.

Then she said, "You need to understand that Logan has invested years of his life in that property."

"I understand that he contributed to the household."

"Then why are you treating him like a stranger?"

"Because the ownership and financial questions need to be handled properly."

She sighed as though I were being deliberately obtuse.

"Charlotte, families make arrangements all the time. Not every signature or transfer needs to become a legal battle."

I held the phone away from my ear for a moment, then brought it back.

"Are you aware that there are documents involving the children's accounts that I did not authorize?"

The silence was immediate.

"What documents?"

"I can't discuss the details while they're under review. Dana is handling the matter."

Her tone changed.

"Are you accusing Logan of stealing from his own children?"

"No. I'm saying the records need to be explained."

"You hear how that sounds, don't you?"

"Yes. I also know how it feels to discover paperwork bearing your name that you don't remember signing."

She said nothing.

I could almost hear her searching for a response that would restore the conversation to its previous shape, where Logan was the injured party and I was the unreasonable wife.

Finally, she said, "I'm sure there's a misunderstanding."

"I hope so."

The call ended shortly afterward.

I sat at the kitchen table for several minutes, looking at the phone. Logan's family had spent years treating his confidence as evidence that his decisions were sound. Now that questions had arisen, they wanted me to accept the most comforting explanation before the records had even been examined.

I would not do that.

The next morning, Dana received a preliminary response from the financial institution. It confirmed that one of the disputed transfers had been processed using documentation submitted by a representative associated with Logan's business. The institution was still reviewing the authorization and would provide further details once the records were complete.

Dana read the response aloud.

I asked whether it meant the transfer had been improper.

"Not yet," she said. "It tells us who submitted the paperwork, but we still need to determine whether the person had valid authority and whether the transaction complied with the account's restrictions."

The response also identified a related document that I had not seen before. It appeared to connect the transfer to a business expense, but the description did not explain why money from an account associated with the children's future needs had been involved.

Dana requested the supporting records.

I left her office feeling as though I had learned something important without learning enough to understand it.

Later that afternoon, Marcus called again. He asked whether I had been searching his room.

I felt my stomach tighten.

"I was putting some things away, sweetheart. I found an envelope with financial paperwork, and I sent it to my attorney because I didn't understand what it was."

"That was Dad's."

"I know. There was a note from him."

Marcus sounded defensive.

"He said it was something I might need later."

"Did he explain what it was for?"

"He said it was about the family accounts. I didn't really read it."

"Did he ask you to sign anything?"

"No."

I waited.

"Are you sure?"

"Mom, I said no. Why are you asking me like I did something wrong?"

His voice cracked slightly on the last word.

I immediately regretted how my questions had sounded.

"You haven't done anything wrong. I'm sorry if I made you feel that way. I'm trying to understand the paperwork, not accuse you of anything."

He was quiet.

Then he said, "Dad told me you were trying to take everything away from him."

I closed my eyes.

"I am not trying to take everything away from your father. I'm protecting the property and making sure the financial records are accurate. Those are different things."

"He says the house should belong to both of you."

"Your father can make that argument through his lawyer. The records will determine what the law recognizes."

Marcus exhaled.

"I don't know what I'm supposed to believe."

"You don't have to decide today."

"But everyone expects me to."

"Then tell them you need time. You are allowed to love your father and still ask questions about what is happening."

He did not answer immediately.

"I just want things to go back to normal," he said.

The words hurt because I wanted the same thing, and because I knew that our old normal could not simply be restored. Logan had made choices that changed our family. The best I could do was help the children navigate those changes without forcing them to carry the burden.

"I know, sweetheart," I said. "I wish I could make that happen for you."

We spoke for a few more minutes about school and his travel plans. Before hanging up, he promised to call Lily and make sure she knew I had not moved any of her things.

Afterward, I sat in the living room with the lights off.

I had spent years believing that protecting my children meant keeping difficult information away from them. Now I was learning that protection also meant refusing to let another adult use their uncertainty as leverage.

Dana called the next morning with more information. The institution had identified a second document associated with the same transfer. It contained an authorization attributed to me, but the institution could not yet confirm whether the signature had been independently verified when the transaction was processed.

Dana had requested the original submission record.

"We need to see what was actually provided," she said. "If the institution relied on a document that did not meet the account's requirements, that may be significant. But we need the full record before drawing conclusions."

I asked whether Logan's attorney had responded.

"He has requested additional time to review the financial issues. We have agreed to a reasonable extension. The property dispute is being handled separately."

The separation of the issues reassured me. I did not want the financial questions to become a bargaining chip in the argument over the house. Each matter deserved its own examination.

That afternoon, I found another email from Logan in my old inbox. It was dated several months before he announced the separation. He had asked me to send him a scanned copy of my signature page from an insurance document because he needed to complete some administrative paperwork while traveling.

I stared at the message.

At the time, the request had seemed ordinary. We had exchanged scans of documents before, and I had not asked why he needed that particular page. I could not remember whether I had sent it.

I forwarded the email to Dana.

She replied that it might be relevant to the review but did not establish that the signature on the disputed document had been copied. She asked me to preserve the email in its original format and avoid making assumptions about how it might have been used.

I followed her instructions.

For the rest of the day, I tried to focus on ordinary tasks. I washed the kitchen towels, watered the plants, and cleaned the refrigerator. I found a small drawing Lily had left beneath a stack of papers and placed it on the counter.

The house was beginning to feel less like a battleground, but I knew that feeling could disappear as soon as another message arrived.

At five, Logan called.

I answered because I wanted to hear whether he intended to discuss the children's return.

"Marcus told me you've been questioning him about the accounts," he said.

"I asked whether he had signed any documents. He told me he hadn't."

"You had no right to involve him."

"I found paperwork in his room. I asked a straightforward question, and I apologized when he felt accused."

"You're making him suspicious of me."

"I'm trying to make sure he understands that he isn't responsible for our financial disputes."

Logan laughed bitterly.

"You've become obsessed with these documents."

"They bear my name, and I didn't sign them."

"You don't know that."

"I know which signatures are mine."

"You've forgotten half the things you've signed over the years."

The remark struck harder than it should have because it touched the uncertainty I had already admitted to myself.

For a moment, I wanted to defend my memory, list every document I remembered, and demand that he explain the transactions immediately.

Instead, I took a breath.

"That's why the records are being reviewed. If the documents are legitimate, the evidence will establish that. If they aren't, we need to know that, too."

He went quiet.

Then he said, "You think your father planned all this because he knew I'd leave you?"

"I don't know what my father anticipated. Dana is reviewing what he actually signed."

"Your father never trusted me."

"I won't speculate about his motives."

"You always take his side."

I looked toward the garden, where the late sunlight fell across the old stone path.

"This isn't about taking sides, Logan. It's about understanding the documents."

He ended the call.

I saved the conversation and sent Dana a brief note explaining what had been said.

That evening, I received a message from Lily. She had sent a photograph of the sea at sunset, with the horizon glowing orange behind the dark outline of a boat.

I replied that it was beautiful and asked whether she was enjoying the trip.

She wrote back that she was, but that she wished everyone would stop arguing.

I told her I understood and that she could call me whenever she wanted to talk.

Then I put the phone down and stood at the window.

The house was mine to protect, but the children were not pieces of property to be divided between their parents. I could not allow the legal dispute to become the measure of their relationships with us.

I needed to remain steady, even when Logan tried to turn every question into a personal attack.

The next morning, Dana sent me a message asking me to come to her office as soon as possible. She had received the original submission record from the institution and wanted me to review it with her.

For the first time, she did not offer a general update over the phone.

She wanted me to see the document myself.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: The Bank Finally Produced the Original Authorization, and the Date on It Forced Me to Reconsider Everything I Remembered

Dana asked me to bring Marcus's document to her office the following morning.
