I almost let it go to voicemail. My father and I had not spoken directly since he had tried to persuade me to sign the statement describing the unauthorized transfers as harmless family advances. The settlement was proceeding, the repayment schedule was documented, and there was no practical reason for another conversation. Still, the attorney's message sounded different from the earlier requests. He said there was a matter concerning Daniel's estate that my father believed I should hear about before making any further decisions regarding the family.

I asked my own attorney to verify whether anything remained unresolved. She confirmed that the financial settlement was still in force, that the fund's independent oversight arrangements were unchanged, and that no new legal obligation had arisen. The attorney representing my father had not identified a specific issue requiring my attention. That made me reluctant to engage, but I eventually agreed to receive a written explanation. I would not attend another meeting simply because my father wanted one.

The letter arrived the following afternoon. It contained no new financial evidence and proposed no amendment to the settlement. Instead, my father wanted to discuss a collection of Daniel's personal documents that had remained in his possession since the early days of our family investment arrangements. He described them as historical records that might be useful to Grace when she grew older. He also suggested that I might wish to review them before deciding whether to preserve any further distance between us.

I read the final sentence twice. My father had found another way to make contact sound like an act of generosity. He was offering access to documents connected to my husband, something he knew I would find difficult to ignore. I could not tell whether he genuinely wanted me to have the records or whether he hoped that Daniel's memory would accomplish what his previous arguments had failed to do.

I contacted Marcus.

"Do you know what documents he's talking about?"

Marcus asked me to wait while he checked the company's archived correspondence. He called back later that day and explained that Daniel had once given my father copies of several investment documents for administrative purposes. The originals had remained with the company or the estate, and the relevant financial records were already preserved. There was no indication that my father possessed anything essential to the investigation or to Grace's inheritance.

"Could there be personal letters?" I asked.

"Possibly. But I can't confirm that from the records I have."

I thanked him and sat quietly for a moment after the call ended. I had no wish to surrender the chance to recover something meaningful from Daniel's life. At the same time, I could not allow the possibility of a sentimental discovery to become a reason to ignore the way my father had behaved.

I wrote to his attorney and asked for an inventory of the documents, along with a description of their origin. I also stated that any material belonging to Daniel's estate should be transferred through the appropriate legal channel rather than used as leverage in a personal dispute. My attorney reviewed the wording before it was sent.

Two days later, the inventory arrived. It listed copies of old investment agreements, correspondence relating to the family fund, and a small envelope containing handwritten notes Daniel had made during the early development of the company. Nothing suggested that the envelope contained a personal letter addressed to me or Grace. I asked for the material to be delivered to my attorney's office, where it could be checked against the estate records.

My father objected to that arrangement. Through his attorney, he argued that it was unnecessary to involve lawyers in what he described as a simple family exchange. He said he had never intended to withhold anything and that I was making every interaction difficult.

I recognized the pattern immediately. When I accepted a request on terms that protected my interests, he treated the conditions themselves as an insult. He wanted to control the setting, the timing, and the interpretation of what happened. If I refused, he could call me unreasonable. If I agreed, he could claim that our relationship was returning to normal.

I did not argue. I confirmed that the documents could be collected through my attorney and left the matter there.

Meanwhile, my mother continued the small changes she had promised to make. She sent occasional messages asking how Grace was doing, and she did not ask to arrange a visit. When I replied with an update, she responded without turning the exchange into a discussion about her own disappointment. It was not enough to restore trust, but it was a departure from the behavior I had known for years.

One afternoon, she sent me a message saying that she had found a box of my childhood drawings while cleaning a cupboard. She asked whether I wanted them. I told her that I did, and she arranged for Helen to bring them when she visited. The box contained crayon pictures, school certificates, and a few folded notes I had written to my parents when I was young. I spent an hour sorting through them, laughing at the misshapen houses and oversized flowers I had drawn with complete confidence.

At the bottom was a picture of our family standing beneath a tree. My father was drawn taller than everyone else, my mother wore a blue dress, and Vanessa and I held hands beside them. I had written our names in uneven letters across the top. Beneath the picture, I had added a sentence about how we would always stay together.

I sat with the drawing for a long time. Children make promises about family because they have no reason to imagine that love can become conditional or that adults might choose pride over compassion. I did not want to become cynical about those promises. I simply understood now that a child's hope could not guarantee an adult's behavior.

Helen found me looking at the drawing.

"Do you want me to take it back?" she asked.

"No. I'm glad to have it."

She sat beside me. "Your mother told me about the coffee meeting. She said you were honest with her."

"I was."

"She said it was harder than she expected to listen without defending herself."

I looked at my aunt. "Did she tell you that she understood why I haven't agreed to a visit?"

Helen nodded. "She said she has to earn your trust."

I let the words settle. They were encouraging, but I reminded myself that they were secondhand. My mother needed to demonstrate that understanding in her own actions, especially when she felt disappointed.

A week later, my attorney received the documents from my father. The financial records matched the existing files, and the handwritten notes appeared to be ordinary business material. One page contained a reminder in Daniel's handwriting to review the fund's approval procedures and confirm that no single family member had unrestricted authority over transfers. The note was dated shortly before the investigation began.

It was not a dramatic revelation. It did not prove that Daniel had anticipated every detail of what happened. But it confirmed that he had been concerned about oversight and had wanted the arrangements to be more secure.

I asked Marcus to keep a copy with the company's archived records. The original note was returned to the estate's files, where it belonged.

I did not contact my father to thank him for the documents. He had fulfilled an obligation, and I did not want to turn that obligation into a bargaining chip. If he genuinely wanted to rebuild a relationship with me, he would need to accept that doing the right thing did not automatically purchase a reward.

Several days later, he called from an unfamiliar number. I answered because I thought it might be a hospital or a delivery service, then recognized his voice.

"Claire, I wanted to ask whether you've received everything."

"I have. The documents have been checked and filed."

"Good. I thought we could have handled that without all the legal involvement."

"We could have, if you had sent an inventory and agreed to transfer the material through the estate."

He sighed heavily. "You always have to make things complicated."

I felt the old tension rise, but I did not let it direct the conversation.

"I asked for a straightforward process. You objected to it. The attorneys handled the matter, and it's finished."

"I am still your father."

"I know who you are."

He went quiet. For a moment, I wondered whether he might say something different, something that acknowledged the distance between us rather than insisting that the title alone should determine my response.

Instead, he asked whether I would consider letting him meet Grace.

I closed my eyes.

"We've discussed this, Dad. I'm not ready."

"Your mother is trying. Why can't you?"

"Mom and I have had a conversation. That doesn't mean every problem has been resolved, and it doesn't mean you're entitled to the same next step on the same timetable."

He said that I was punishing him, that the settlement had already cost the family enough, and that he did not understand why I was still holding on to the past.

I listened until he stopped speaking.

"I'm not asking you to agree with me about everything," I said. "I'm asking you to accept that my decisions about Grace are mine to make. If you can't respect that, we're not ready for a visit."

He ended the call without saying goodbye.

I stood beside the kitchen counter, my phone in my hand, and waited for the familiar guilt to arrive. It came, but it was weaker than before. I knew my father would describe the conversation to other people as another example of my stubbornness. I could not prevent him from doing that. What I could do was refuse to let his interpretation determine whether my decision was sound.

That evening, I sat with Grace in the backyard. She had begun taking several steps without holding onto furniture, and she delighted in crossing the grass toward me before dropping into my arms. Each time she reached me, she laughed as though she had completed an extraordinary journey.

I held her and looked toward the house.

My mother was learning that an apology did not create an immediate entitlement to forgiveness. My father was still struggling to accept that accountability meant losing control over the outcome. I could care about both of them without pretending their behavior was the same.

For the first time, I was able to imagine a future in which my relationship with my mother might gradually improve while my relationship with my father remained distant. I did not have to treat the family as a single unit that either remained intact or fell apart. Each relationship would have to stand on its own.

The thought brought relief, but it also brought sadness. I had spent years imagining that a family could be repaired by finding the right words and persuading everyone to meet halfway. I was beginning to understand that sometimes one person could take a step forward while another continued to stand in the same place.

I could not make that decision for them.

I could only keep the door closed until opening it became a choice based on trust rather than pressure.

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: When Grace Took Her First Independent Steps, I Faced a Choice About Her Grandmother That Had Nothing to Do With Forgiving the Past

Three days after meeting my mother for coffee, I received a call from my father's attorney.
