She has opinions about money, appearances, education, and the people she considers suitable company. I have tried to discourage her from making those judgments.”

“Apparently, you haven't tried very hard.”

His face tightened. “No. I suppose I haven't.”

I opened the folder and turned the first page toward him.

“Did you authorize these complimentary arrangements?”

He glanced down. His eyes moved over the list of suites, transportation, catering, and additional services. For a moment, he looked almost relieved, as if he had expected a far more personal confrontation.

“Yes,” he said. “I approved the accommodations.”

“All three suites?”

“Yes.”

“The chauffeur?”

“Yes.”

“The additional floral arrangements and the upgraded champagne?”

He swallowed. “Yes.”

“And the spa package?”

“That was for Eleanor and two relatives visiting from out of town.”

“Was the event budget approved for these expenses?”

“The family was hosting an important celebration. I expected the hotel to accommodate us.”

“That wasn't my question.”

Richard lowered his gaze to the paper.

“No. The additions weren't all included in the original event budget.”

“Who authorized the exceptions?”

“I did.”

“Under what authority?”

He took a breath. “I have regional responsibilities. I believed I could approve certain hospitality expenses.”

“You can approve expenses within the limits established by company policy. You cannot turn a private family celebration into a collection of personal benefits simply because you supervise several properties.”

“I intended to reimburse the company.”

“When?”

He opened his mouth, then closed it again.

I waited.

The wall clock ticked softly behind him. Outside the window, a car pulled away from the hotel entrance, its headlights briefly washing across the glass.

“I haven't settled the exact amount yet,” he admitted.

“Then you have no repayment plan.”

“I can arrange one.”

“You can certainly propose one. That doesn't make the original approvals acceptable.”

He leaned forward. “Claire, I understand how this looks, but I wasn't trying to steal anything. I wanted the event to go well. Eleanor has been planning it for months, and she's very concerned about appearances. I thought a few upgrades would prevent unnecessary complaints.”

I studied him. His explanation sounded plausible enough to have been rehearsed in his own mind. People rarely began by telling themselves they were abusing their positions. They called it a favor, an exception, a temporary arrangement, or something they would correct later.

“Did your wife ask you to provide these services?”

“Yes.”

“Did she know they were being paid for by the company?”

Richard hesitated.

“She knew I was handling the arrangements.”

“That wasn't my question either.”

“I didn't explain every detail.”

“Then she may have believed the hotel was giving them away because you owned it.”

His head snapped up.

“She knows I don't own the hotel.”

“Does she?”

He looked away.

That was the first moment I became genuinely concerned. His discomfort was no longer simply about the expenses or my reaction to Eleanor's behavior. He was worried about something he did not want to say aloud.

I removed the complimentary service approvals from the folder and placed them beside a second document.

“Your position will be reviewed by the board tomorrow morning. The review will cover these expenses, the authority under which they were approved, and any related transactions. Until the review is complete, you should not authorize additional discretionary spending at any property under your supervision.”

His shoulders dropped.

“Are you suspending me?”

“I'm telling you that your authority is under review. The board will determine what happens next.”

“Because Eleanor insulted you?”

“No. Because you authorized company resources for personal use without the necessary approvals. Your wife's behavior explains why we're speaking tonight. It doesn't determine the outcome of the financial review.”

He stared at me for several seconds.

“I've worked for this company for eighteen months.”

“I know.”

“I helped stabilize the northern properties. I recruited two managers who were about to leave the industry. I negotiated the contracts for the new maintenance program.”

“I know that, too.”

“Then please consider the whole picture.”

“I will. That's why the review will examine the whole picture.”

He seemed to want a promise that his earlier achievements would erase his current decisions. I could understand the instinct. I had built my career by taking responsibility for difficult outcomes, and I knew how much work could sit behind a good record. But a strong performance did not give anyone permission to treat a company's assets as an extension of their personal life.

I closed the folder.

“The party will continue tonight. Your family will receive the services they contracted for. The complimentary arrangements will be reviewed and any unauthorized additions removed from the billing plan. Nobody will interrupt Sophie’s celebration to discuss this.”

Richard's expression changed.

“Thank you.”

“Don't thank me yet. I'm not finished.”

He became still.

“If you have any financial relationships with the vendors supplying this event or any of our hotels, disclose them to the compliance department before the meeting tomorrow. Include any relationships involving relatives, spouses, consulting firms, or companies in which you or a family member has a financial interest.”

His fingers tightened against his knees.

“I don't have anything to disclose.”

“Then the disclosure should be straightforward.”

He rose slowly.

“Claire, I want you to know that I never intended for Eleanor to treat you that way.”

“You didn't have to intend it. You only had to allow it.”

He looked as if he might answer, but whatever he had prepared disappeared. He nodded once and walked toward the door.

Before he left, I spoke again.

“Richard.”

He turned.

“Do not tell your wife that she has been punished because she insulted me. Do not tell her that the board meeting is a personal matter. If you have concerns about the review, bring them to me or the compliance team directly.”

“Understood.”

The door closed behind him.

I remained seated for several minutes, listening to the muted sounds of the hotel continuing its evening business. A reception was being served on the floor below us. Guests were checking in at the front desk. Somewhere in the ballroom, a string quartet was playing a familiar melody.

I wanted to believe that the problem was limited to poor judgment and excessive spending. That would have been disappointing, but manageable. We could recover the money, revise the approval process, and make sure that senior executives understood the boundaries of their authority.

Yet Richard's reaction to the disclosure question troubled me.

I called our chief financial officer, Denise Morgan, and asked her to join the board meeting the next morning with the latest internal audit records.

“Is this about the Whitmore event?” she asked.

“Partly.”

“Should I prepare a review of regional expenses as well?”

“Yes. Start with the previous eighteen months. I want unusual vendor rates, related-party transactions, consulting payments, and exceptions approved by Richard's office.”

There was a brief silence.

“That may take some time.”

“Take the time you need to do it properly. I don't want assumptions. I want documents.”

“Understood.”

When I ended the call, I noticed a message from Sophie.

Are you home? I'm sorry tonight got awkward. I hope you understand I was under a lot of pressure.

I read it twice.

There was no question about whether I was hurt. No acknowledgment that she had stood beside the woman who humiliated me. She had described the incident as awkward, as though we had disagreed about seating arrangements.

I typed a response, then deleted it.

Finally, I wrote: I'm safe. Enjoy the rest of your evening. We can talk when you're ready to have an honest conversation.

I set the phone aside.

I did not expect her to answer.

At the same time, in the ballroom, Eleanor Whitmore was apparently enjoying herself again. Martin sent me a short operational update confirming that the event was continuing normally. He mentioned that several guests had asked why I had left, but staff had declined to discuss a private matter.

Then came a second message.

Mrs. Whitmore has been speaking with guests about the hotel's ownership and next year's renovation plans. She has described Mr. Whitmore as having significant influence over the property.

I sat forward.

I had not authorized any announcement about a renovation. Our long-term planning was still under discussion, and no regional director had permission to promise investors a project that had not been approved.

I called Martin.

“Did Eleanor make those statements directly to investors?”

“She was speaking with two men who introduced themselves as business partners. I don't know whether they're actual investors. They were discussing the hotel and asking questions about next year's plans.”

“Did Richard make any commitments?”

“Not in front of me. He was at the other end of the ballroom when I heard about it.”

“Keep a record of the names of the guests involved. Don't confront anyone, and don't interrupt the event.”

“I'll handle it discreetly.”

After the call, I opened the company's planning records. The Grand Meridian's next major renovation had been tentatively discussed for the following year, but the proposal had not passed the investment committee. Even if Richard knew about the preliminary discussions, he had no right to present them as settled.

Eleanor's claims might have been nothing more than careless boasting. Still, they were another reason to examine the Whitmore family's understanding of Richard's position.

I returned to the ballroom shortly before the event ended, using the private corridor that led to the administrative entrance. I did not intend to confront anyone. I wanted to observe the situation without making my presence the center of it.

Through the glass panels, I saw Eleanor standing near a group of guests, one hand resting on a man's arm as she spoke with animated confidence. Her expression was relaxed now. She seemed convinced that the evening had ended exactly as she had intended.

Sophie stood a short distance away beside Daniel. She was smiling at something he had said, but her smile faded when she noticed me through the glass.

For a moment, we looked at each other.

I could have entered the room. I could have told the guests that I owned the hotel, introduced myself to the supposed investors, and corrected Eleanor's claims in front of everyone.

Instead, I stepped back into the corridor.

I had promised Sophie I would not disrupt her engagement party. I would keep that promise, even if she had failed to protect me when it mattered.

The following morning, the boardroom was already occupied when I arrived. Denise had arranged a stack of financial reports beside her laptop. Two independent directors sat near the windows, and our legal counsel was reviewing the agenda.

Richard entered three minutes later.

He looked as if he had barely slept.

I greeted him without comment and took my place at the head of the table. The meeting began with a review of the complimentary event expenses. Denise walked the board through each authorization, comparing it with the company's policies and the original contract.

The numbers were significant but not catastrophic. They were, however, part of a pattern that required a closer look.

“Mr. Whitmore approved these exceptions himself,” Denise explained. “Several expenses were coded as promotional hospitality, although the beneficiaries were members of his family. There is no supporting record showing that the event was part of an approved corporate initiative.”

One of the directors looked at Richard.

“Did you classify these expenses as business development?”

Richard shifted in his chair.

“I didn't personally enter the accounting codes. My office submitted the requests.”

“Were you aware of the classifications?”

“I reviewed the approvals.”

“Then you were responsible for understanding what you were signing.”

Richard nodded reluctantly.

The board voted to restrict his discretionary spending authority while the review continued. His employment status would remain under consideration until the wider audit was complete.

He accepted the decision without protest.

For a few minutes, I thought the meeting might end there. Then Denise opened another file.

“The event expenses led us to review vendor approvals under Mr. Whitmore's supervision,” she said. “We found agreements with two suppliers whose pricing is materially above comparable market rates.”

Richard frowned.

“Which suppliers?”

Denise named them.

He looked at the paperwork, then at her.

“Those are established companies. We have used them for years.”

“The question is not whether they exist,” Denise replied. “The question is why their rates are substantially higher than the alternatives, and why the difference was approved without a documented competitive review.”

One of the directors leaned forward.

“Who owns these suppliers?”

Denise looked at the next page.

“Both companies are owned by Mr. Whitmore's brother.”

The room fell silent.

Richard's face drained of color.

He stared at the contracts as if he had never seen them before. Then he shook his head.

“I can explain the family connection.”

“Please do,” I said.

He looked at me, and for the first time since entering the boardroom, he appeared frightened rather than merely embarrassed.

Before he could speak, Denise placed a third document on the table.

The excess payments had not gone directly to the suppliers' operating accounts. A portion had been routed through a consulting company with a different registered name.

The company's owner was Eleanor Whitmore.

Richard looked down at the page.

“I didn't know about that.”

Denise kept her voice neutral.

“Your signature appears on both vendor agreements.”

“I signed the contracts. I didn't know where the additional funds went.”

“Then the audit will establish what you knew, when you knew it, and whether the approvals were proper.”

I watched him struggle to find a response. The previous evening, he had described the unauthorized expenses as temporary favors he intended to repay. Now we were looking at transactions that appeared to connect his professional authority, his brother's companies, and his wife's consulting business.

This was no longer a question of an extravagant engagement party.

I looked around the table.

“We will not draw conclusions before the evidence is complete,” I said. “But the contracts will be frozen pending review, the relevant records preserved, and the independent auditors given full access.”

The board agreed.

As the meeting broke up, Richard remained seated. The other directors left with Denise and the legal counsel, their voices fading down the corridor.

Richard finally looked up at me.

“Claire, I need to speak with you privately.”

I gathered the documents into a single folder.

“You can speak to me now.”

He glanced at the closed door.

“There's something about Eleanor you don't understand.”

I waited.

He lowered his voice.

“She has been asking questions about the ownership of the company for months. I thought she was simply curious. But after what happened last night, I don't think curiosity explains it.”

I held his gaze.

“What do you think explains it?”

He swallowed.

“I think she has been trying to find out how much influence I could gain over the company—and how close I could get to you.”

For the first time, the pieces began to fit together in a way I did not like.

Richard's unauthorized benefits. The unusual vendor contracts. Eleanor's questions about the hotel's ownership. Her confidence in the ballroom.

I opened the folder again.

“Then we need to find out what she has been planning.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: The Recording That Exposed Why Eleanor Wanted My Sister to Forget the Woman Who Raised Her Up

Richard sat down carefully, placing both hands on his knees as though he were attending a formal review rather than a private meeting with the person who could determine his …

[1

post-7965","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-sharestory
["GET
