Denise and our legal counsel were already seated when I entered. The atmosphere was quiet and businesslike, but the papers spread across the table suggested that the review had reached a significant stage.

“We received the remaining records from Peter Whitmore yesterday,” Caroline began. “Some documents support the suppliers' claims that they provided legitimate services. Others raise questions that require further explanation.”

She opened the envelope and removed a series of invoices, work orders, and payment confirmations. The first invoices concerned ordinary maintenance and supply contracts. The work orders were complete, the services could be verified, and the prices were broadly consistent with market rates.

The consulting payments were different.

Several invoices described services such as strategic positioning, supplier introductions, and corporate relationship development. Yet the supporting files contained little beyond brief meeting notes and generic presentations. Some documents appeared to have been prepared after the corresponding invoices had already been paid.

“Can we establish whether the work was performed?” I asked.

“Not in every case,” Caroline replied. “We interviewed two people who were named as participants in the consulting work. One confirmed attending a meeting. The other said no such meeting took place.”

Denise leaned forward.

“Was the second person aware that their name appeared on the invoice?”

“No. They were surprised to see it.”

Our counsel wrote down the response.

Caroline moved to the next page. It showed a payment from Peter's company to Eleanor's consulting business, followed several days later by an internal request from Richard to extend Peter's contract at another property.

“The dates are close,” Caroline explained. “The contract extension was approved without the usual comparative pricing review. We cannot conclude from timing alone that the payment influenced the decision, but the missing review is a procedural failure, and the undisclosed family relationship is a separate concern.”

“Did Richard know about the payment before approving the extension?” I asked.

“We have not established that yet. We have asked him to respond to the transaction records.”

She opened the final document.

“This is the item I wanted you to see. It is an email from Eleanor to Richard, sent the day after the payment was made. The subject line refers to Peter's consulting agreement.”

The email was brief. Eleanor thanked Richard for helping Peter's company obtain another opportunity and said the arrangement had allowed her consulting business to recover the cost of work it had undertaken for Peter.

There was no explicit reference to an exchange of money for a contract approval. Nevertheless, the message linked Eleanor's consulting work to Richard's intervention in the supplier process.

I read it twice.

“Has Richard seen this email?”

“Yes. He acknowledged receiving it. He says he understood the message to refer to legitimate consulting work and did not connect it to the contract decision.”

“Did he ask what work had been completed?”

“No.”

“Did he disclose the message to compliance?”

“No.”

Our counsel folded her hands.

“The email does not, by itself, prove a corrupt arrangement. But it establishes that Richard knew his wife's company had a financial relationship with a supplier whose contract he influenced. That knowledge should have triggered disclosure and recusal.”

I looked at Caroline.

“What happens next?”

“We complete the remaining interviews, verify the invoices, and issue a formal findings report. The board will then decide on employment consequences and any further action. Depending on the final findings, the company may also need to refer specific transactions to the appropriate authorities.”

“Proceed.”

The meeting continued for another hour. We reviewed each disputed transaction, noting where the evidence was conclusive, where it remained incomplete, and which people still needed an opportunity to respond. I insisted that the report distinguish between established facts and reasonable suspicions.

When the meeting ended, Caroline gathered her papers.

“We should have the final report ready within several days,” she said.

“Thank you. Make sure the record includes Richard's responses, including any explanation that contradicts the preliminary findings.”

After she left, Denise remained in the room.

“There's a separate issue involving the proposed renovation,” she said.

I looked at her.

“What issue?”

“One of the property advisers Eleanor spoke with at the reception has provided a written account. He says Eleanor told him that the Whitmore family expected to influence the selection of contractors for the Grand Meridian's next renovation.”

“Did she claim that Richard could guarantee the contracts?”

“She said he would be involved in the decision. The adviser understood her to be suggesting that the family could help him gain access to the project.”

“Was any proposal submitted?”

“No formal proposal. The adviser says Eleanor asked what information a potential contractor would need to prepare an offer.”

I considered the statement carefully.

“The renovation has not been approved. No one should be discussing contract allocations as though the project is settled.”

“Agreed.”

“Have legal send a formal clarification to the adviser. We should make clear that all future procurement decisions will follow the approved process.”

Denise made a note.

When she left, I stood by the window overlooking the hotel entrance. A couple had just arrived with two young children, and the doorman was helping them unload their bags. Their ordinary arrival reminded me that most people never saw the work required to keep a business functioning. They simply expected the room to be ready, the staff to be courteous, and the promises made by the company to be honored.

That trust was the reason I had acquired the Grand Meridian in the first place. It was also the reason I could not allow a senior executive's family arrangements to undermine the business.

My phone rang.

It was Daniel.

“Have you got a minute?” he asked.

“Yes.”

“Sophie told me about our conversation. She said you're giving her space to make her own decision.”

“I am.”

“I wanted you to know that I support her decision to postpone the wedding. I don't want her to feel pressured to continue simply because invitations have been sent or money has been spent.”

“That is a good place to start.”

He was quiet for a moment.

“My mother keeps telling me that Sophie is being manipulated by you. She says you are using your money and influence to turn her against the family.”

“Have you seen any evidence of that?”

“No. But she repeats it so often that I sometimes catch myself wondering whether it could be true.”

“Then ask yourself what Sophie has actually said and done. She apologized for her behavior at the party. She decided to postpone the wedding because she needs to know whether your relationship can exist independently of your mother's control. Those are her decisions.”

“I know.”

“Daniel, you cannot make your mother reasonable by agreeing with her. You can only decide what behavior you will accept in your own life.”

He exhaled.

“I've started looking for an apartment for Sophie and me. Somewhere away from my parents. I thought we would live near them after the wedding because my mother wanted us close.”

“Have you discussed that with Sophie?”

“Yes. She wants to consider it, but she doesn't want to rush into moving while we're uncertain about the wedding.”

“Then respect that. A new apartment will not solve the problem if you carry the same expectations into it.”

“I understand.”

He thanked me for speaking with him and ended the call.

I hoped he meant what he said. I had no desire to see Sophie and Daniel separate simply because their families had become entangled in a business investigation. But neither did I want Sophie to mistake endurance for commitment.

The following afternoon, Sophie came to my office again. She had spent the previous day with Daniel, and she looked calmer than she had at the café.

“We talked about the wedding,” she said. “We agreed that we won't set a new date until we know what kind of relationship we can have with his mother.”

“How did Daniel respond?”

“He listened. He didn't try to tell me I was overreacting. He admitted that he has been avoiding his mother's behavior for years.”

“That is progress.”

“He also said he wants to learn more about the investigation without interfering with it. He knows his father needs to answer for what he did, but he doesn't want to assume his mother is guilty of something just because she has behaved badly.”

I smiled faintly.

“That is the right approach.”

Sophie sat across from me and looked at her hands.

“There's something I need to tell you. Eleanor called me last night.”

“What did she say?”

“She asked whether you had shown me the company's financial records. I told her you hadn't. Then she asked whether I could persuade you to stop the investigation.”

I remained silent.

“She said the family would be ruined if the review continued. She said Daniel's future depended on his father keeping his position, and that I had a responsibility to protect the family I was about to marry into.”

“What did you tell her?”

“I said I couldn't interfere with the investigation and that I wasn't going to ask you to stop it.”

Sophie looked up.

“She became furious. She told me that I was betraying Daniel before we were even married.”

I let her finish without interrupting.

“Did she say anything else?”

“She asked whether you had always been this controlling. I told her that you had never tried to control my life. Then she said I didn't understand what people with real influence were capable of doing.”

Sophie swallowed.

“I think she expected me to be frightened. Maybe she thought I would come to you and beg you to make everything go away.”

“Did you consider it?”

“For a moment. Then I remembered the ballroom. I remembered how quickly she decided I should choose her approval over my relationship with you. I don't want to become someone who keeps quiet whenever a powerful person is angry.”

Her voice trembled slightly, but she did not look away.

I reached across the desk and took her hand.

“I'm proud of you for making that decision.”

She squeezed my fingers.

“I still love Daniel. I don't want to lose him. But I need to know that if we get married, he won't expect me to accept whatever his mother decides.”

“That is a conversation you need to continue having with him.”

“I will.”

Before she left, Sophie asked whether she could help me with anything related to the hotel.

“Thank you, but the investigation is being handled by the auditors and legal team. I don't want you placed in the middle of it.”

“I understand.”

She paused at the door.

“Claire, when this is over, I want us to spend time together without talking about the Whitmores. I want to remember that we're sisters.”

“So do I.”

After she left, I returned to the final audit schedule. The last interviews were scheduled for the following morning, and the board had set a date for the formal review.

That evening, Richard sent another message. He said he had received the disputed email from Eleanor's consulting company and had reviewed it alongside the transaction records. He acknowledged that he should have disclosed the relationship and stepped away from the procurement decisions.

He also asked whether I would consider allowing him to resign quietly rather than face a formal employment hearing.

I did not answer immediately.

His request might have reflected genuine remorse. It might also have reflected a desire to avoid the consequences of a public finding. Either way, the decision could not be made privately between us.

I forwarded the message to counsel and asked that Richard be told the board would consider any resignation request through the established process. The investigation would continue regardless of whether he remained employed.

The next morning, Caroline called with the final interview summary.

“Mr. Whitmore has acknowledged that he knew about the consulting relationship before approving the later contract extension,” she said. “He continues to deny knowing that any payment was improper. We have not found evidence that he personally received money from the suppliers.”

“Does that change the findings?”

“It narrows them. We can establish an undisclosed conflict of interest, failure to follow procurement controls, and repeated approval of contracts without the required review. The question of whether he knowingly participated in a payment arrangement remains unresolved.”

“Then state exactly that.”

She agreed.

I ended the call and looked toward the ballroom wing. In a few days, the hotel would host another private event, and the staff would prepare the room with the same care they had shown before the engagement party. The building would continue to serve people celebrating new beginnings, even while the company dealt with the consequences of decisions made behind closed doors.

I hoped that the Whitmore family could eventually do the same: face what had happened, accept the truth, and decide what kind of future remained possible.

But before that could happen, the board needed to make its decision.

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: The Boardroom Decision Forced the Whitmores to Face the Cost of Everything They Had Chosen to Ignore

Caroline Webb arrived at the evidence review carrying a sealed document envelope and a laptop containing the latest transaction analysis.
