He wanted to know where he would get on, where he would get off, and which entrance led to the supermarket's main shopping area.

Marcus helped him confirm the information, but he resisted the urge to add instructions to every line.

Theo had already traveled the route with him. He remembered the pharmacy near the bus stop, the wide pedestrian crossing, and the bakery opposite the supermarket entrance. He knew how to ask the driver a question and what to do if the bus did not arrive at the expected time.

The notebook contained what he needed to remember.

On Wednesday evening, Theo placed it beside Marcus's plate at dinner.

“I think I'm ready.”

Marcus set down his fork.

“For the whole trip?”

“Yes.”

“The bus, the shopping, and the return journey?”

Theo nodded.

Marcus felt the old apprehension rise inside him. The larger supermarket was busier than the store on Fourth Street, and the journey involved more opportunities for something unexpected to happen.

He thought about suggesting another practice trip.

Then he remembered that they had already completed one together, and that Theo had prepared carefully for this next step. Asking him to repeat the same journey simply because Marcus felt nervous would not necessarily make him safer. It might only communicate that Marcus did not trust the preparation they had done.

“When would you like to go?” Marcus asked.

“Saturday morning. The bus is quieter then.”

“That sounds sensible.”

Theo smiled and returned to his dinner.

Marcus spent the rest of the evening reminding himself that his brother's decision did not require a guarantee of success. It required a reasonable plan and the freedom to respond if the day did not unfold exactly as expected.

On Saturday, Theo woke early.

He ate breakfast, checked the weather, and placed his wallet and notebook in a small shoulder bag. He counted the money he intended to spend and made a short list of the groceries he wanted to buy.

Marcus watched from the kitchen doorway.

“Are you taking your water bottle?”

Theo looked at the bag.

“Yes.”

“Good.”

Marcus stopped himself before asking whether he had checked the bus schedule again. Theo had already checked it twice.

Instead, he said, “Have a good trip.”

Theo approached the door, then turned back.

“Will you be home when I return?”

“Yes.”

“Okay.”

He left.

Marcus stood in the hallway for a moment, listening to his footsteps recede. Then he returned to the kitchen and began washing the breakfast dishes.

The apartment felt unusually quiet.

He made coffee, opened his laptop, and tried to concentrate on a work task. For the first half hour, he managed reasonably well. Then he glanced at the clock and remembered that Theo would be approaching the bus stop.

Marcus pictured him checking the route in his notebook, waiting for the signal to change, and boarding the bus. He imagined Theo taking a seat near the window and counting the stops as the buildings passed.

The images were not frightening by themselves.

What troubled Marcus was his inability to know exactly what his brother was experiencing. He could not see whether the bus was crowded or whether a sudden noise had unsettled him. He could not tell whether Theo was feeling confident or silently working through a difficult moment.

For years, Marcus had been the person who noticed those details.

Now he had to accept that Theo could experience them without Marcus standing beside him.

He returned to his laptop.

At the supermarket, Theo followed the route they had practiced. He waited at the crossing, checked the street before stepping onto the pavement, and entered through the main doors.

The store was larger than the one on Fourth Street, with wider aisles and several checkout lanes. The ceiling lights reflected off the polished floor, and the low murmur of conversation blended with the sounds of carts and scanners.

Theo paused near the entrance and opened his notebook.

He checked the first item on his list, then walked toward the grocery section.

He found the milk without difficulty. The bread was displayed near the bakery, just as Marcus had told him. The cereal aisle was longer than the one at their usual store, and he spent several minutes comparing the labels before choosing the brand he wanted.

The chocolate was more difficult to locate.

Theo walked past one display, stopped, and checked the overhead signs. He returned to the end of the aisle and tried another direction.

For a moment, he felt the familiar tension in his shoulders. The shelves were arranged differently from the ones he knew, and the number of choices made it harder to identify the product quickly.

He took out his notebook.

FIND THE ITEM. ASK IF NEEDED.

Theo looked around for an employee.

A woman in a green apron was stacking boxes near the end of the aisle. Theo waited until she finished placing one on the shelf, then approached her.

“Excuse me. Can you tell me where the chocolate bars are?”

The employee smiled and pointed toward the next aisle.

“They're on the left, just past the biscuits.”

“Thank you.”

Theo followed her directions and found the display.

He selected the chocolate bar he wanted, checked the price, and placed it in his basket.

At the checkout, he chose a lane with only one customer ahead of him. He placed his items on the conveyor belt and waited while the cashier scanned them.

The cashier asked whether he needed a bag.

Theo answered clearly.

“No, thank you.”

He counted the money, completed the payment, and accepted the receipt. Then he checked his list to make sure he had not forgotten anything.

Milk. Bread. Cereal. Chocolate.

Everything was there.

Theo folded the receipt, put it in his wallet, and carried his groceries toward the exit.

Outside, the morning air felt cooler than it had when he entered. He stopped near the bus shelter and checked the return schedule.

The bus was due in eight minutes.

Theo sat down and waited.

A few minutes later, an older man took the seat at the opposite end of the shelter. He placed a bag beside his feet and began talking on his phone. The man's voice was louder than Theo preferred, and the conversation continued long enough to become distracting.

Theo felt his fingers begin to move.

He opened his notebook and looked at the return route. He reminded himself that he only needed to wait for the bus, check the number, and board when it arrived.

When the bus appeared, he stood and approached the curb.

He checked the number on the front display before boarding.

The journey home was uneventful. Theo watched the familiar landmarks pass outside the window, checked his stop against the notes in his notebook, and pressed the button when the bus approached the correct street.

He stepped off and walked home.

Marcus was preparing lunch when the front door opened.

Theo entered carrying the shoulder bag.

“I went to the big supermarket,” he said.

Marcus turned from the counter.

“You did.”

“I got everything.”

Theo placed the groceries on the table and removed his notebook. He checked each item on the list, then took out the receipt.

Marcus looked at the paper.

“How did it go?”

Theo thought for a moment.

“The chocolate was hard to find.”

“What did you do?”

“I asked an employee.”

“And?”

“She told me where it was.”

Marcus smiled.

“That worked.”

Theo nodded.

“The bus was loud, too. But I waited at the stop and checked the number.”

Marcus felt his chest loosen.

“You handled it.”

Theo placed the notebook beside the groceries.

“I want to go again.”

Marcus laughed softly.

“Already?”

“Not today. Maybe next Saturday.”

Marcus looked at his brother, who was arranging the groceries on the counter with his usual care. Theo had encountered two unfamiliar situations: locating an item in a different store and waiting beside a noisy stranger. Neither had gone exactly as he might have preferred.

Yet he had not abandoned the trip. He had used his notes, asked for assistance, and followed the return route.

He had managed the uncertainty.

“That sounds good,” Marcus said. “We'll check the schedule together if you want.”

Theo nodded.

They unpacked the groceries and prepared lunch. Theo told Marcus about the long cereal aisle and the employee who had helped him find the chocolate. He described the bus shelter, the man's loud telephone conversation, and the relief he felt when the correct bus arrived.

Marcus listened without interrupting.

When Theo finished, Marcus asked whether he had enjoyed the trip.

“Yes,” Theo replied. “It was different.”

“Different in a good way?”

“Mostly.”

Marcus smiled.

“That's fair.”

Later that afternoon, Theo sat at the dining table and added a new entry to his list of things he could do.

TAKE THE BUS TO THE BIG SUPERMARKET.

He underlined the words once.

Marcus watched from the kitchen.

He thought about the six years they had spent learning together: the medication schedules, the sensory triggers, the familiar foods, the bus routes, and the grocery-store routines. None of those efforts had made the world completely predictable. They had given Theo tools he could use when it was not.

That was the real purpose of preparation.

Not to guarantee that nothing difficult would happen, but to help Theo recognize what he could do when it did.

Marcus had once believed that being a good caregiver meant preventing every problem he could anticipate. He now understood that his role was more complicated. He needed to help his brother develop the confidence to make decisions, the practical skills to respond to difficulties, and the assurance that asking for help did not erase his independence.

Theo had demonstrated all three.

That evening, Marcus found him reading on the sofa.

“Do you want to go to the grocery store on Fourth Street tomorrow?” Marcus asked.

Theo looked up.

“Why?”

“We need bread.”

Theo considered the question.

“I can go.”

Marcus nodded.

“All right.”

Theo returned to his book.

Marcus went back to the kitchen, feeling a quiet satisfaction that was different from the relief he had experienced after Theo's first successful independent trip. The larger supermarket had required more planning, but the result had not been dramatic.

It had simply expanded what Theo knew he could do.

And that was enough.

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: When Marcus Remembered the Boy Who Had Once Hidden Behind His Jacket, He Finally Understood What His Brother Had Been Trying to Tell Him

For the next several days, Theo prepared for the trip to the larger supermarket.
