Soft lights hung above the tables, the floral arrangements framed the entrance, and the polished floor reflected the pale colors of the decorations. Staff moved between the tables with trays and folded napkins, making final adjustments before the guests arrived.

I paused just inside the entrance to steady myself. My knee was not ready for a long walk, and the cane helped me keep my balance as I crossed the room. Sophia stood near the side corridor with the process server, reviewing a document folder before the service began.

She approached me quietly.

“Are you comfortable continuing?”

“Yes.”

“You can leave at any time. The documents will be handled whether you stay or not.”

“I understand.”

She nodded and returned to the process server.

Across the room, Mom spotted me first. She hurried over, her face brightening with relief until she noticed Sophia standing nearby. The change in her expression was immediate.

“Claire. You came.”

“I said I would if I was able.”

She looked at my cane. “You shouldn't have pushed yourself.”

“I didn't. My doctor cleared me for the trip.”

For a moment, she seemed unsure what to say. Then she leaned closer.

“Please, let's not discuss anything unpleasant today. Megan has been through enough.”

I looked around the room at the flowers, the place cards, and the arrangements that had been paid for with money connected to the disputed sale.

“I haven't come to discuss the case with guests,” I said. “Sophia is handling that.”

Mom's gaze shifted toward the corridor.

“Why is she here?”

“She has legal work to do.”

“Claire, please.”

Before she could continue, Dad approached us from the opposite side of the room. His expression was tight, and he looked first at me, then at Sophia, then at the process server holding the folder.

“You said you wouldn't bring this here,” he muttered.

“I said I wouldn't start a confrontation.”

“This is a wedding.”

“Yes.”

“Then act like it.”

I kept my voice low. “I'm not the person who arranged a property transfer using a deed I never signed.”

He glanced around, checking whether anyone had overheard us.

“Not here,” he said.

“You chose the timing when I was unconscious.”

His face reddened.

“You don't know what you're talking about.”

“I know what the recorded documents say.”

He started to respond, but Sophia stepped closer and asked him to speak with her attorney if he had questions about the proceedings. Dad looked as though he wanted to argue, but he finally stepped away.

Megan appeared a few minutes later in her wedding gown. The dress was fitted at the waist, with delicate embroidery along the sleeves. Her hair had been arranged carefully, and her makeup concealed the exhaustion I had heard in her voice during our recent calls.

When she saw me, her expression changed from surprise to alarm.

“What are you doing?”

“I came because you asked me to.”

Her gaze moved to Sophia and the process server.

“You brought them here?”

“No. Sophia arranged the legal service. I didn't direct her to do it at the wedding.”

Megan looked toward our parents, who were standing several feet away. Dad was speaking urgently to Mom, and neither appeared willing to meet my eyes.

“You promised you wouldn't ruin this,” Megan whispered.

“I promised I wouldn't start a confrontation. I haven't.”

“Everyone is going to know.”

“The documents concern the people involved in the transaction. If they have questions, they should ask the people who made the decisions.”

She shook her head, tears gathering at the corners of her eyes.

“Why can't you just let us get through today?”

I felt the old instinct to reassure her, to say that everything would work out, to offer whatever small comfort might restore the familiar relationship between us. But I had learned that comfort offered at the cost of truth only postponed the next injury.

“Megan, I didn't sell the townhouse. I didn't sign the deed. I didn't arrange the payments. I can't take responsibility for those decisions.”

She looked away.

Before she could respond, the process server approached her.

“Megan Collins?”

She stared at him.

“Yes.”

He identified himself and presented the documents in accordance with the service requirements. Sophia remained beside him, making sure the process was properly documented. The room grew quieter as nearby guests noticed the exchange.

Megan accepted the papers with trembling hands.

Tyler approached from the far side of the ballroom. He had been speaking with a group of relatives near the entrance, but he stopped when he saw the documents.

“What is that?” he demanded.

“Legal papers,” Sophia replied calmly. “If you have questions about the claims, please direct them to your attorney.”

Tyler looked at Megan.

“You said this was handled.”

She swallowed.

“It was supposed to be.”

The words came out softly, but the people nearest us heard them. Tyler stared at her as though he had never seen her before.

“What does that mean?”

Megan looked toward her parents. Neither spoke.

Tyler turned back to her. “You told me there was nothing wrong with the property arrangement. You said your parents had authority to deal with it.”

“They said they did.”

“Did you know the house belonged to Claire?”

“Of course I knew it belonged to her.”

“Then how could you think this was all right?”

Megan's face crumpled.

“I thought Dad had permission.”

“Did you ever ask Claire?”

She didn't answer.

Tyler stepped away from her, shaking his head. The change in his expression was not simply anger at the interruption of the wedding. It was the look of someone realizing that the assurances he had relied on might have concealed a much larger problem.

The process server moved toward Tyler's uncle, who had been standing near the head table. The man recognized the documents before they were handed over and began speaking sharply about the venue being an inappropriate place for legal proceedings.

Sophia remained composed.

“The documents are being served according to the applicable requirements. If you believe there is a procedural issue, your attorney can address it.”

The uncle accepted the papers reluctantly.

Dad was served next. When he saw the formal notice, he tried to push it back toward the process server.

“I already have an attorney.”

“You may provide the documents to your attorney,” the process server replied.

Dad took the papers, his hands stiff around the edges.

Finally, the notary was approached. I had not known she would be present until Sophia confirmed the arrangements. She had been invited as a family friend, apparently believing that the dispute would remain separate from the wedding.

When she saw the process server, she tried to leave through the side corridor.

He called her name and followed the required procedure for delivering the documents. She accepted them with a pale, rigid expression.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

The ballroom had not become chaotic. No one was shouting, and no guests had been asked to leave. But the carefully maintained atmosphere of celebration had fractured. Conversations stopped at nearby tables, and people began exchanging uncertain looks.

Mom hurried toward me.

“Are you satisfied now?” she whispered. “You've humiliated your sister in front of everyone.”

I looked at the hand she had reached toward my arm. She stopped before touching me.

“No,” I said. “I'm not satisfied. I wanted my home back, and I wanted the truth.”

“You could have waited until tomorrow.”

“The legal process has its own schedule. The service arrangements weren't made to punish Megan.”

“You know what people will think.”

“I know what the documents say.”

She stared at me, then looked away as if she could no longer recognize the daughter she had spent years persuading to compromise.

Dad approached again, clutching the papers.

“This is an attack on your own family.”

“No. It's a legal dispute over a property transfer.”

“You've destroyed the wedding.”

“I didn't make the transaction.”

He looked around the room, then lowered his voice.

“Tell them you agree to the sale. Tell them you gave us permission. We can still resolve this.”

I shook my head.

“I won't sign a false statement.”

“You don't understand what this will cost us.”

“I understand exactly what it has already cost me.”

Tyler's uncle interrupted, demanding to know why the property company had been named in the proceedings. Sophia explained that the claims concerned the transfer, the disputed authorization, and the related financial transactions. She did not discuss evidence beyond what was appropriate, and she reminded everyone that the allegations would be addressed through the legal process.

Tyler turned toward his uncle.

“You told me the transaction was legitimate.”

His uncle began to respond, but Tyler cut him off.

“You said the paperwork was checked. You said Claire had authorized it.”

“I was told the authorization was valid.”

“By whom?”

The uncle looked at Dad.

That glance was brief, but it changed the conversation. Tyler followed it and turned toward Megan's father.

“Did you tell him she had given permission?”

Dad's jaw tightened.

“This isn't the place to discuss it.”

“Then where should we discuss it? After you've paid for my wedding with a house that doesn't belong to you?”

Mom tried to intervene, telling Tyler that the family had only been trying to help Megan. Tyler didn't seem to hear her. He was looking at the papers in his hand, reading the formal description of the dispute.

Megan stepped toward him.

“Tyler, please. We can talk privately.”

He moved away.

“You told me the money was arranged. You told me the property belonged to your family in a way that made the sale possible.”

“It wasn't supposed to happen like this.”

“Like what? With the real owner objecting?”

She began to cry.

I watched the exchange without feeling victorious. The wedding had been built around a promise that the money was available and the transaction was legitimate. Now the people who had relied on that promise were being forced to confront questions they had avoided.

Sophia touched my shoulder lightly.

“We should give them space. The documents have been served.”

I nodded.

We moved toward the side corridor, where I could sit for a moment and rest my knee. The room behind us had become a confusion of whispered conversations and hurried phone calls. Several relatives were asking what had happened. Others were leaving the ballroom to speak privately with family members.

Through the open doorway, I could see Mom standing beside Megan, holding her hands and speaking rapidly. Dad was on his phone, apparently trying to reach his attorney. Tyler's uncle had moved away from the head table, and the notary sat alone near the wall with the documents in her lap.

The ceremony had not begun.

Sophia sat beside me.

“You handled yourself well,” she said. “You didn't make accusations beyond the evidence, and you let the legal process proceed.”

“I didn't want this to happen in front of everyone.”

“I know. But you didn't create the underlying situation, and you weren't required to hide it because the timing was uncomfortable.”

I rested both hands on the cane.

“Will this affect the case?”

“The service itself is only one step. The case will be decided by the evidence and the applicable legal process, not by what happened in this room.”

I nodded.

Across the ballroom, Tyler returned to Megan. They spoke quietly for several minutes. I couldn't hear their words, but I saw him shake his head and step away again. Megan followed him, still holding the documents, and tried to catch his arm.

He gently pulled free.

The venue manager approached Mom and Dad shortly afterward. Whatever she said, it made their expressions change. Mom began speaking quickly, gesturing toward the tables, but the manager remained firm.

A few minutes later, a staff member began asking guests to wait in the lobby while the venue reviewed whether the event could proceed.

I looked at Sophia.

“Is it being canceled?”

“We don't know yet,” she said. “The venue has its own obligations and decisions to make. We shouldn't assume the outcome until it's confirmed.”

I appreciated her answer. Even now, when the evidence had become impossible to ignore, I didn't want to turn uncertainty into a declaration.

My knee had begun to ache, and I knew I couldn't remain standing much longer. Sophia arranged for someone to help me reach the entrance. Before I left, I glanced back at the ballroom one final time.

The flowers were still beautiful. The lights still glowed above the tables. The place cards remained neatly arranged, each one marking a seat for someone who had expected to attend a wedding.

But the people who had organized the event could no longer pretend the source of the money was a private detail that would disappear if everyone stopped talking about it.

I stepped into the corridor and leaned on my cane.

For weeks, my family had treated the wedding as a deadline that justified every decision. Now the date had arrived, and the documents had reached the people who needed to answer for the transaction.

Whatever happened next would be determined by their choices and the evidence, not by my willingness to stay silent.

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: The Wedding Was Called Off Before the First Vow, and the Financial Records Revealed What My Sister Had Been Willing to Overlook

The ballroom looked exactly as it had in the photographs.
