Daniel was still on the line, waiting for me to speak. The bed was neatly made, his book lay facedown on the nightstand, and his side of the wardrobe stood open by an inch. Everything in the room belonged to the life we had built together, but I could no longer look at any of it without wondering what I had failed to notice.

“Did you talk about me?” I asked.

“Sometimes.”

“What did you say?”

“That we had been distant.”

I sat on the edge of the bed. “We were distant because you were never home.”

“I know.”

“Did you tell Sophie that I kept asking you to come home earlier? Did you tell her I was trying to spend time with you?”

He answered yes to both questions. Each admission felt like another door opening onto a room I had never known existed.

Then I asked whether Sophie had ever said she understood him better than I did.

Daniel did not answer immediately.

I looked at the framed photograph on my nightstand, taken during a weekend trip years earlier. His hair had been shorter then, and he was wearing the faded jacket he refused to throw away. I had been leaning against his shoulder, laughing at something he had whispered. We had not owned much, but I remembered feeling rich in the ways that mattered.

“Did she say it?” I asked.

“Once.”

“And what did you say?”

“I didn't correct her.”

I stared at the photograph until the edges blurred.

That admission hurt in a way the kiss had not. The kiss was a physical betrayal, something I could point to and name. This was different. Sophie had positioned herself as the person who understood my husband, and Daniel had allowed her to occupy that place while I continued believing that the deepest parts of him still belonged to our marriage.

Perhaps he had not intended to replace me. Perhaps he had simply enjoyed the attention, the feeling of being admired by someone who saw his professional success without knowing the uncertainty that had preceded it. But whatever he had wanted, he had let another woman believe that she possessed a special understanding of him.

“What did you want from her?” I asked.

“I don't know.”

“Try again.”

He breathed out. “I liked the way she saw me.”

“As what?”

“Successful.”

The word hung between us.

I looked toward the wardrobe, where his suits hung in a careful row. I had helped him choose some of them. I had bought him the watch he wore every day after saving for six months, back when we could not afford to replace the old refrigerator without rearranging our budget. I had seen him lose a job, sit in a grocery-store parking lot after an argument with his father, and worry himself sick before his first major presentation to investors.

I knew the man beneath the polished photographs and executive titles. I had believed that knowing him so completely was one of the privileges of our marriage.

“You think I didn't see you as successful?” I asked.

“That isn't what I meant.”

“You think I stopped admiring you because I knew you before the company, before the expensive suits, before people started waiting for you to enter a room?”

“No.”

“Then what did you mean?”

He struggled to explain. He said that with Sophie, he could talk about the company without feeling that he was bringing his worries home. She worked beside him. She understood the negotiations, the investors, and the pressure of the expansion. Their conversations had begun with practical problems, then drifted into more personal territory.

I listened. I could understand how it had happened without accepting what he had done.

“You had a wife who wanted to know how you were feeling,” I said. “You decided it was easier to tell another woman.”

“I didn't decide that at the beginning.”

“But you kept deciding it every time you went back to her.”

He did not argue.

I asked him when the conversations had become inappropriate. He said he could not identify a single moment. They had begun with work, continued after meetings ended, and gradually included personal frustrations. Sophie would ask how he was coping. He would tell her more than he intended. She listened without challenging him, and he began to look forward to the conversations.

“Did you tell her you loved me?” I asked.

“Yes.”

The answer surprised me, though I was not sure why. Perhaps I had expected him to say he had stopped loving me before the kiss, because that would make the story easier to understand.

“What did you tell her about our marriage?”

“That we had been struggling.”

“Did you tell her I was trying to fix it?”

“Yes.”

“Did you tell her that I asked you to come home earlier because I missed you?”

“Yes.”

I stood and walked toward the window. Outside, the garden was dark, and rainwater shone along the edges of the patio. I remembered sitting there in June, waiting for Daniel to join me for dinner. He had texted that he was delayed. I had reheated the food, then eaten alone.

At the time, I had imagined him in a conference room, working through difficult decisions. I had even defended him when a friend asked why he was never available.

I had made excuses for his absence while he was giving someone else the attention I had been asking for.

“Did you ever think about how it would feel if I knew?” I asked.

“Yes.”

“When?”

“After the kiss.”

“And before it?”

He was quiet.

“Daniel, did you think about me before you kissed her?”

“Yes,” he whispered.

I pressed my forehead against the cool window glass. “Then you knew what you were doing.”

He said he had not planned to betray me. He described the kiss as a moment when the boundary between them had finally been crossed, and he insisted that he had stopped it from becoming anything more. He said he had told Sophie it could not happen again.

I believed that the kiss might have been the only physical encounter. I had seen them asleep together, and I had heard his account of the evening. Nothing in what he said established that they had gone further.

But the absence of a sexual affair did not restore the trust he had already damaged. He had allowed an emotional intimacy to develop in secret, then crossed a physical boundary, then returned home and continued our ordinary life without telling me.

“How did she react when you said it couldn't happen again?” I asked.

“She was upset.”

“Of course she was.”

“I told her I wasn't leaving you.”

I turned from the window. “Did she ask you to?”

“Not exactly.”

“What does that mean?”

“She said she thought we had something important.”

I felt a sharp ache behind my ribs. “And what did you tell her?”

“That I loved you.”

I laughed once, without humor. “You told another woman you loved your wife while letting her believe she had a place in your life that your wife didn't know about.”

“I know how that sounds.”

“It sounds like what happened.”

He began apologizing again. This time, I did not interrupt him. I let him speak until his words became repetitive, until he was no longer explaining anything but simply trying to make the distance between us less unbearable.

When he stopped, I asked him to describe the night I had found them.

He said the expansion negotiations had gone badly that afternoon. The team had spent hours trying to salvage the deal, and by the time the others left, he and Sophie were exhausted. She had received upsetting news about her family and started crying. He poured whiskey, and they talked.

She leaned against him. He allowed it.

At some point, they fell asleep.

“Nothing else happened,” he said.

I believed him about that part. It did not make the scene harmless. He had known that his relationship with Sophie was no longer innocent, and he had still allowed the physical closeness to continue. Whatever he told himself about the evening, he had not protected his marriage or the woman who was supposed to be able to trust him.

When he finished, I sat in silence. My mind was full, but the questions had begun to lose their urgency. There was no single answer that could return me to the woman who had driven through the rain with a thermos of soup.

“What happens now?” he asked.

I looked down at my bare finger.

“You leave me alone.”

“For how long?”

“I don't know.”

“Are you ending our marriage?”

The answer rose to my lips, then stopped. I had imagined leaving him during the worst minutes of the evening. I had also imagined forgiving him, because that was what I had always done when life became difficult: find the path that allowed us to continue.

Neither impulse was a decision I was ready to make.

“I don't know what I'm ending yet,” I said. “But the marriage we had before tonight is over.”

He made a broken sound, and I closed my eyes. Once, that sound would have made me reach for him. Now I let the silence remain.

“Even if I forgive you someday,” I continued, “I will never again be the woman who drove to your office believing that work was the only thing keeping you away from me.”

He whispered my name.

“Go to a hotel. Don't come here tomorrow. Don't send flowers. Don't ask Sophie to contact me again. I don't want a grand gesture designed to make me respond before I'm ready.”

“Okay.”

I paused, then added, “You need a new assistant.”

“She resigned tonight.”

I went still. “When?”

“After I told her what happened. She said she couldn't continue working with me.”

For the first time that evening, I thought about Sophie as someone who had made a choice she could no longer comfortably live with. Her resignation did not absolve her of responsibility, and it did not lessen mine. But it suggested that she understood the situation could not return to what it had been before.

I ended the call and stood in the bedroom doorway. Our home was filled with objects that had survived every previous difficulty: the photographs, the furniture we had chosen together, the little marks left by years of living in the same rooms.

I had spent the evening asking myself how to save our marriage.

Now, for the first time, I wondered what would remain if I stopped protecting it from the consequences of Daniel's decisions.

The answer frightened me.

But the thought of continuing blindly frightened me more.

Click here to continue reading: PART 4: Six Days Apart Forced Me to Face the Difference Between the Man I Loved and the Choices He Had Made

I moved from the bathroom to our bedroom, carrying the phone as if its weight had increased.
