I recognized Vanessa’s number before the second ring, but I let the phone vibrate in my hand while I watched the gray morning sky through the window.

Marcus glanced at the screen.

“Are you going to answer?”

“Eventually.”

He did not ask why I was hesitating. He knew that my family had a habit of turning an ordinary conversation into an obligation before I had finished my first cup of coffee.

The phone stopped ringing. A moment later, a message appeared.

We need to talk. It's important.

I put the phone beside me and looked out at the road. The city was beginning to wake, its streets crowded with delivery trucks and commuters hurrying toward offices. Somewhere across town, my parents were probably discussing the previous evening, deciding which details to emphasize and which to leave out. Vanessa would be doing the same, except that her thoughts would already have moved toward the hotel project.

The flight to Paris had been scheduled for weeks. We had meetings arranged with the local management team, a property consultant, and the financial advisers responsible for the next stage of our expansion. I had spent the previous month reviewing projections and negotiating terms. The work was demanding, but it was familiar. Unlike family arguments, it rewarded preparation and punished assumptions.

Marcus reached across the seat and took my hand.

“You don't have to deal with them today.”

“I know.”

“Then don't.”

I looked at him.

“If I ignore the call, she'll keep trying until I answer. If I answer, she'll tell me it's urgent. Either way, she'll expect me to solve something.”

“And what do you want to do?”

I considered the question. For most of my adult life, I had treated other people's expectations as deadlines. If someone called with a problem, I rearranged my schedule. If a relative became upset, I tried to find the precise combination of words that would restore peace. I had convinced myself that being dependable meant being available whenever someone wanted me.

It had taken years to recognize the difference between helping someone who respected my time and being summoned by someone who assumed it belonged to them.

“I'll hear what she has to say,” I replied. “Then I'll decide.”

Marcus nodded. “That's fair.”

At the terminal, we completed the brief formalities and boarded the aircraft. Our luggage had already been loaded, and a member of the flight crew greeted us before showing us to our seats. The cabin smelled faintly of coffee and polished leather. Through the window, the runway stretched into the distance beneath a thin layer of morning haze.

I had just opened my laptop when Vanessa called again.

This time, I answered.

“Good morning,” I said.

“Finally. Where are you?”

“On my way to Paris.”

“Are you already on the plane?”

“Not yet.”

She exhaled sharply, as though my travel schedule had personally inconvenienced her.

“Can you please take this seriously? I have a real problem.”

“Then tell me what happened.”

There was a pause. I heard movement on her end, followed by the familiar sound of a door closing. Vanessa often lowered her voice when she wanted a conversation to sound confidential, even when there was nobody nearby who needed to hear it.

“The hotel investors are asking questions.”

“What questions?”

“About the financing.”

I opened a blank document on my laptop, more from habit than intention. When someone discussed a business problem, I preferred to identify the actual issue before responding to the emotion surrounding it.

“What part of the financing?”

“The family contribution.”

I stopped typing.

“What family contribution?”

“The money you were going to put in.”

“I never agreed to put money into your project.”

“You said you would look at the business plan.”

“I said you should send it to me. You haven't sent it.”

“That's not the point.”

“It's precisely the point if you're telling investors that I'm providing capital.”

Her silence lasted long enough for me to hear a faint electronic chime in the background.

“What have you told them?” I asked.

Vanessa's answer came too quickly.

“Nothing that isn't reasonable.”

“Vanessa.”

“I told them I had a potential family investor who could cover the remaining funding gap.”

“Did you identify me?”

“Not by name.”

“Did you tell them the money was committed?”

Another pause.

“I said it was expected.”

I closed the laptop.

“Expected on what basis?”

“You're my sister. You have the resources, and we discussed the opportunity.”

“We discussed the fact that you wanted me to review an unfinished proposal. You asked for nearly half a million dollars. I asked you for documentation. You haven't provided any. At no point did I promise you a cent.”

Her breathing became audible.

“You made it sound as though there was a chance.”

“There was a chance I might consider investing if the numbers justified it. That isn't a commitment.”

“Do you know how this makes me look?”

I looked at the closed laptop, then through the window at the ground crew moving around the aircraft.

“I can imagine.”

“No, you can't. These people have spent months listening to me explain the concept. They think I have the backing to make it happen. Now they're asking me to prove the money exists.”

“Then you need to correct what you told them.”

“That's easy for you to say.”

“It is easy to say because it's the correct thing to do.”

Vanessa gave a bitter laugh.

“You've changed so much.”

The accusation was beginning to sound like a family greeting.

I remained quiet, waiting for her to explain what she wanted from me. She had called because something had gone wrong, but she still seemed to believe that describing her embarrassment would make the original decision disappear.

Finally, she said, “I need you to confirm that you're interested in investing. You don't have to transfer anything yet. Just give me a letter saying you're considering the project, and I'll send it to them.”

“No.”

The word came out calmly. I did not raise my voice or explain myself again.

Vanessa sounded genuinely shocked.

“You haven't even seen the property.”

“Exactly.”

“You haven't seen the projections.”

“Exactly.”

“You don't know what kind of return it could make.”

“Neither do you, apparently, because you haven't provided the projections.”

She inhaled sharply.

“You could at least help me get through this meeting. Once the investors are comfortable, we can work out the details.”

“That would mean confirming something that isn't true.”

“It wouldn't be a lie. You said you might consider it.”

“I might consider it after reviewing the documents. That is all I have said.”

The cabin door closed, and the engine noise changed as the aircraft prepared for departure. Marcus sat across from me, reading through a briefing document. He did not interrupt, but I could tell from his expression that he had heard enough to understand the situation.

Vanessa lowered her voice again.

“Please don't do this to me. Mom and Dad already think last night was a disaster. If the investors withdraw, they'll blame you.”

I looked down at my wedding ring.

There was a time when that sentence would have been enough to make me reconsider. I would have pictured the family arguments, the disappointed looks, the relatives who would hear only one version of the story. I would have tried to prevent the embarrassment, even if doing so required me to accept responsibility for a promise I had never made.

This time, I felt no urgency to rescue her from the consequences of her own words.

“Your investors need accurate information,” I said. “Tell them the family investment has not been committed. If you want me to evaluate the project, send me the complete proposal. I'll review it on its merits.”

“You're seriously refusing to give me a letter?”

“Yes.”

“After everything that happened last night?”

“Especially after last night. I won't make a financial commitment under pressure, and I won't let you represent my intentions as a guarantee.”

She went silent.

Then her voice hardened.

“So this is punishment.”

“No. Punishment would mean I was trying to make you suffer. I'm simply refusing to make a promise I haven't made.”

“You know what? Forget it.”

The call ended.

For a moment, I kept the phone against my ear, listening to the dead line. Then I set it down and watched the screen go dark.

Marcus closed his briefing document.

“How bad?”

“She told investors I was expected to cover the funding gap.”

He raised his eyebrows.

“Without your agreement?”

“Yes.”

“And now she wants a letter.”

I nodded.

He leaned back, visibly displeased.

“That's not a misunderstanding. That's a representation made to people who may rely on it.”

“I know.”

“Are you going to tell her investors yourself?”

“Not unless there's a reason to believe they received something in my name or that she has used my company details. She needs to correct her own statements first.”

Marcus considered that, then nodded.

“Agreed. Keep a record of the conversation.”

I opened my laptop again and wrote a brief note documenting the date, time, and substance of the call. I recorded only what I could remember accurately: the expected family investment, Vanessa's request for a letter of interest, and my refusal to confirm any commitment.

It was a routine precaution, the kind I would take if a business associate described an investment inaccurately. The fact that the person involved was my sister did not make the risk disappear.

As the aircraft began moving toward the runway, my phone vibrated once more.

This time, it was my mother.

I let it ring.

A message followed almost immediately.

Your sister is very upset. Whatever happened between you last night, don't let it destroy her future.

I read it twice.

Not once had my mother asked what Vanessa had told the investors. She had not asked whether I had made a commitment or whether the project was financially sound. She had simply decided that my refusal was the obstacle and that removing it was my responsibility.

I typed a reply, then deleted it. I did not owe her an immediate explanation while we were preparing for takeoff.

Instead, I switched off the phone and placed it in my bag.

Marcus watched me.

“Better?”

I looked through the window as the aircraft turned onto the runway. The terminal buildings slid past, then the ground began to move faster beneath us.

“Yes,” I said. “Not because the problem has gone away. Because it's finally hers to solve.”

The aircraft lifted into the morning sky.

Below us, the city became a patchwork of roads, buildings, and pale roofs. I thought about the hotel project, the missing documents, and the investors who had apparently been told to expect money from a person who had never agreed to provide it.

The situation was more serious than an argument over dinner. If Vanessa had represented a family contribution as expected financing, she had created a problem that could not be repaired by telling our parents I was being difficult.

She would have to correct the record.

And if she refused, the consequences could reach far beyond the disappointment of a failed business plan.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: The Investors Wanted Proof of the Money She Had Promised, and My Sister Finally Discovered That Confidence Could Not Replace a Contract

The first call came at 8:17 the following morning, just as the car carrying Marcus and me approached the private terminal.
