Daniel's name appeared on my phone, followed by three missed calls from the night before. I watched the screen until it stopped ringing. Then I poured my coffee, opened my laptop, and began reviewing the documents my attorney had asked me to organize.

I had slept for barely four hours. Every time I closed my eyes, I remembered Patricia's hand striking my face and Daniel standing in the doorway, asking me to apologize. The memory no longer confused me, but it still hurt. I had spent years interpreting his silence as weakness, something he might eventually overcome if I gave him enough time. Now I had to consider the possibility that his silence had been a choice because it made his life easier.

My phone rang again.

This time, I answered.

“Claire, we need to talk,” Daniel said.

His voice was hoarse, as though he had spent the night rehearsing what he intended to say. Behind him, I heard the muted clatter of dishes and the television playing in the background. He was probably at a relative's house, somewhere he could explain his version of the evening before anyone asked him uncomfortable questions.

“About what?” I asked.

“Everything that happened yesterday.”

“Then you should speak to my attorney about the financial matters.”

“I am not calling about the money.”

I looked at the folder beside my laptop. The bank statements were arranged by date, with the transfers highlighted and the destination account documented. Beside them lay copies of the disputed equipment agreement and the messages connecting the proposed transaction to Brittany's restaurant.

“Then what are you calling about?”

“Mom.”

I closed my eyes briefly.

“Your mother has her own legal matters to deal with.”

“She is my mother, Claire. You can't expect me to sit back and let this happen.”

“I didn't tell you to sit back. I told you not to ask me to apologize after she hit me.”

He exhaled sharply. “She was upset. She knows she shouldn't have done it.”

“Did she tell you that?”

There was a pause.

“She hasn't been able to sleep.”

“That wasn't my question.”

He changed direction. “The family is talking. People think you've gone too far.”

“People who weren't there?”

“Some of them were there.”

“And they saw what happened.”

“Not everyone understands the situation.”

I stared through the kitchen window at the pale morning light spreading over the garden. It was an ordinary morning in an ordinary house, yet everything familiar seemed to have acquired a different meaning. Daniel was still trying to make the problem about my reaction rather than the choices that had brought us here.

“What would you have done if I had slapped your mother?” I asked.

He said nothing.

“Would you have asked her to apologize to me?”

“That's different.”

“Why?”

“Because—”

He stopped.

I waited, but he did not finish the sentence.

Finally, he said, “We need to keep this from getting worse.”

I understood then that he was not calling to ask whether I was all right. He was calling because the situation had escaped his control, and he wanted me to help him regain it.

“I won't discuss the investigation over the phone,” I said. “If you have something relevant to the financial records, send it through the appropriate channel.”

“Claire, don't do this.”

“I didn't start it.”

I ended the call before he could turn the conversation into another argument about my behavior.

At eight o'clock, my attorney, Melissa Grant, arrived at my office. She had reviewed the documents the previous evening and wanted to discuss the next steps before I responded to any further messages from Daniel or his family. We sat across from each other in the conference room, with the morning sunlight falling across the long table and a stack of property reports waiting at the far end.

Melissa began with the financial transfers.

“We need to distinguish between what we know, what we suspect, and what still requires verification,” she said. “The records establish that substantial funds moved from the joint account into an account controlled by Patricia. We also have documentation connecting some of those funds to the restaurant renovations. The remaining transactions need to be traced carefully.”

I nodded.

“Can we recover the money?”

“That depends on the source of each transfer, the account arrangements, the applicable law, and what happened to the funds afterward. We can take steps to protect your interests, but I won't promise a result before we know more.”

Her caution was reassuring. I did not need someone to tell me I would win every dispute. I needed someone who would tell me what the evidence supported and what it did not.

We moved to the equipment agreement.

Melissa compared the signature on the disputed document with copies of my authorized signatures. She examined the electronic correspondence, the timestamps, and the file history I had preserved. She also reviewed the company's authorization procedures and the records identifying who could approve the transfer of assets.

“The company should issue a formal notice that this transfer was not authorized,” she said. “We should also secure the original records and ensure that no one can dispose of or move the equipment while the dispute is being examined.”

“Can Daniel still access the company accounts?”

“That depends on the permissions currently assigned to him. We need to review those immediately.”

I called my operations director, Martin Hayes, and asked him to join us.

Martin had worked with me for six years. He was careful with contracts, methodical about inventory, and unimpressed by family titles when a business decision required proper authorization. After Melissa explained the situation, he opened the company's access records and began checking the relevant accounts.

Daniel had no ownership interest in Mercer Property Group. He had, however, been given limited administrative access to certain shared operational systems so he could help coordinate maintenance at one of our venues. That access had never authorized him to transfer equipment, execute company contracts, or negotiate the disposal of corporate assets.

Martin reviewed the permission history.

“His access was broader than it needs to be for his current responsibilities,” he said. “We can restrict it while we conduct a formal review.”

Melissa agreed that we should preserve the access logs and make any changes through documented procedures. We did not delete accounts or destroy messages. We secured the records first, then adjusted permissions to protect the company while the dispute was investigated.

At 10:42, Martin received a message from one of the venue managers.

Someone had called the previous evening asking about the availability of several kitchen appliances and preparation stations. The caller had claimed that a transfer to Brittany's restaurant had already been approved and that the equipment would be collected soon.

Martin read the message twice.

“Did anyone release anything?”

“No,” the venue manager confirmed by phone. “We told them we needed written authorization.”

I felt my stomach tighten.

The equipment had not been moved, but someone had already begun preparing to take possession of it. The proposed agreement had not been an idle family discussion. It had reached the point where employees were being contacted about an actual transfer.

Melissa asked Martin to preserve the manager's message and document the call. Then she instructed me not to contact Brittany or Daniel about the equipment while the legal review was underway.

Before leaving, she gave me one final warning.

“Expect them to change their explanations. Once people realize that records exist, they sometimes become very eager to provide new context. Don't argue with them. Preserve what they send you and let us evaluate it.”

I understood that advice better than I wanted to.

At lunchtime, Daniel sent me a long message.

He claimed that the eighty-six thousand dollars had been transferred with the intention of helping the family, not for personal gain. He said he had believed I would eventually approve Brittany's business proposal and that the equipment agreement had been prepared in anticipation of our discussion. He insisted that the signature was part of a preliminary document, not a final contract.

He also wrote that I had always known he wanted to help Brittany establish herself financially.

I read the message carefully, then forwarded it to Melissa without responding.

The message contained one particularly revealing sentence: Daniel said that the money was not missing because it had been used for a purpose we had previously discussed.

We had never discussed transferring eighty-six thousand dollars to Patricia. We had never discussed using company equipment to establish Brittany's restaurant. And I had never approved a partnership.

If Daniel had misunderstood an earlier conversation, he could identify the conversation. If he believed I had agreed to the proposal, he could produce the message or document that recorded my consent.

Instead, he had offered another explanation without providing the evidence to support it.

At three o'clock, I received a call from Brittany.

I almost let it go to voicemail, but I answered because she might have information relevant to the disputed agreement.

“Claire, please don't ignore me,” she said.

“I'm listening.”

“I know you're angry, but I need to explain what happened.”

“Then explain.”

She spoke quickly, as though she feared I would interrupt. Daniel had told her months earlier that he could arrange access to equipment from my company. He had described the arrangement as part of a plan to help her open the restaurant. Later, he said the money had been transferred to their mother because that was the easiest way to coordinate the expenses.

“Did he tell you the transfer had already been approved?” I asked.

“Yes.”

“Did he show you a signed agreement?”

“He emailed me one.”

“Did you ask me whether I had signed it?”

She went quiet.

“No,” she admitted.

“Why not?”

“Daniel said he'd already handled everything.”

I leaned back in my chair.

“Brittany, if you believed the agreement was legitimate, I understand why you planned around it. But you had an obligation to confirm the arrangement before committing yourself to a business that depended on my company's assets.”

“I know.”

“Do you?”

Her breathing became uneven.

“I have deposits due. The contractor is waiting, and the supplier wants payment. If the equipment doesn't arrive, I could lose the space.”

I felt the old impulse to solve her problem rise inside me. I could imagine calling the supplier, arranging a temporary loan, or negotiating a solution that would protect Brittany from the consequences of Daniel's promises.

Then I remembered the money transfers and the signature.

“I can't authorize equipment that I never agreed to transfer,” I said. “You need independent legal advice about the commitments you've made.”

“So you're just going to leave me with nothing?”

“No. I'm telling you that I won't make promises I cannot legally or honestly keep.”

She ended the call without saying goodbye.

That evening, Melissa informed me that the formal notice concerning the disputed equipment agreement had been prepared. The company would state clearly that the proposed transfer was unauthorized and that no one had permission to remove the identified assets. The notice would be sent to the relevant parties, with copies retained in the company records.

I signed the document electronically using the company's established approval process.

For the first time since the previous afternoon, I felt that the situation was moving in a direction I could understand. There were still unknowns, and the consequences would take time to unfold, but the process no longer depended on convincing Daniel's family to acknowledge what they had done.

At 8:36 that evening, my phone rang again.

Daniel's voice was different this time.

“Claire, Brittany says you've refused to help her.”

“I have refused to transfer equipment without authorization.”

“You know she has money invested in this.”

“I know.”

“She could lose everything.”

“Then you should have discussed the proposal with me before making promises in my name.”

He fell silent.

I heard a door close on his end of the call. When he spoke again, his voice was quieter.

“There's something you need to understand. Mom didn't know about every part of the agreement.”

I sat straighter.

“What does that mean?”

“It means the money wasn't all for the restaurant.”

I waited.

Daniel hesitated, then said, “Some of it was used to cover another expense. An expense that had nothing to do with Brittany.”

“What expense?”

He took a breath.

“I can't explain it over the phone.”

“Then put it in writing and send it to Melissa.”

“Claire—”

“If you're telling me that money from our account went somewhere else, I need the details.”

He hung up.

I stared at the darkened screen, hearing his unfinished sentence long after the call had ended. For weeks, I had believed the restaurant explained the transfers. Now Daniel had admitted that it explained only part of them.

I opened the financial folder and returned to the transaction list. The dates were all there, the amounts, the destination account, the subsequent payments. I had reviewed them repeatedly, but I had not yet found an explanation for every transfer.

Somewhere in those records was the answer Daniel had been trying to avoid.

And for the first time, I suspected that Brittany's restaurant might have been only one part of a much larger arrangement.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: A Second Set of Transfers Led Away from Brittany’s Restaurant and Toward an Obligation Daniel Had Never Mentioned

The first call came at 6:17 the following morning, while I was standing barefoot in the kitchen waiting for the coffee machine to finish brewing.
