He never laughed loudly enough to appear openly cruel. Instead, he gave a brief, satisfied chuckle, the kind that invited everyone around him to understand that he knew something they did not. I had noticed it several times during dinner, and I was beginning to suspect that it had served him well throughout his career.

When a guest questioned the scale of his company's expansion, Richard dismissed the concern with a wave of his hand. When another mentioned tightening credit conditions, he described them as an inconvenience for less capable executives. His confidence appeared limitless.

I wondered whether he had always been like that or whether years of getting his way had gradually convinced him that consequences were things that happened to other people.

Across the table, Emma was barely touching her dessert. The engagement ring on her left hand caught the chandelier's light whenever she moved her fork. She had been looking at it more often than at Andrew, and I knew she was thinking about what had happened.

I leaned toward her.

“You don't have to stay if you're uncomfortable.”

She shook her head. “I don't want to make a scene.”

“You didn't make the scene.”

“I know.” She paused, then lowered her voice. “I just never thought they would behave like that in front of everyone.”

Neither had I. People sometimes revealed their worst qualities in private, where they believed nobody important would hear about them. The Whitmores had chosen a room filled with witnesses.

That told me something about their sense of security.

A few minutes later, Andrew approached our end of the table. He carried two small cups of coffee, one of which he placed in front of Emma.

“Are you all right?” he asked her.

She looked at him for a moment.

“Are you asking because you care, or because you noticed everyone watching us?”

Andrew's expression changed. He glanced toward the other guests before returning his attention to her.

“Emma, please. I know tonight has been awkward.”

“Awkward?” she repeated. “Your mother told my mother she wasn't important enough to speak to her. Your father suggested she belonged with the staff. And you stood there.”

“I was trying not to make things worse.”

“For whom?”

He opened his mouth, then closed it.

Emma looked down at her coffee.

“I need you to understand something. I didn't expect you to fight with your parents. I expected you to tell them that humiliating someone you love is unacceptable.”

Andrew pulled out the empty chair beside her but did not sit.

“My mother can be difficult. You know that.”

“Yes. I know. What I don't know is why you keep asking everyone else to accommodate her.”

His eyes moved toward me. For the first time, I saw him looking at me as a person whose opinion might matter to him rather than as an uncomfortable relative he wished would disappear.

“Mrs. Bennett, I am sorry about what happened earlier.”

I held his gaze.

“I appreciate that you said it. But the apology I need to hear isn't necessarily mine to ask for.”

He nodded, although I could not tell whether he understood.

Before he could say anything else, Richard called him from the other end of the table. Andrew hesitated, then returned to his father without answering Emma's question.

She watched him go.

“That,” she whispered, “is what I mean.”

I placed my hand over hers.

“You don't have to make a decision tonight.”

“I know.” She looked at her ring again. “But I have to stop pretending I don't see things.”

I was proud of her for saying it. I also understood how difficult it would be for her to follow that thought wherever it led.

Michael called while the guests were moving into the adjoining drawing room for coffee and after-dinner drinks. I excused myself, stepped into a quiet corridor, and answered.

“Tell me what has changed.”

He did not waste time on pleasantries.

“Catherine, our team has been through the latest material from the Whitmore Group. We still don't have the complete agreements for several major customer accounts. The company says the documents are commercially sensitive, but we already have confidentiality protections in place.”

“Have they explained why the documents weren't included in the original data room?”

“They've given us three different explanations.”

I leaned against the wall beside a tall window. Beyond the glass, the garden lights illuminated the edges of the hedges and the pale stone path leading toward the entrance.

“What do the auditors think?”

“They aren't comfortable signing off on the assumptions in the current model. Some revenue appears to have been recognized before all the contractual conditions were satisfied. We need the side agreements to determine whether the timing is justified.”

“Could it be a documentation problem?”

“It could,” Michael replied. “That's why we haven't made an accusation. But we can't approve the transaction while the evidence remains incomplete.”

I appreciated his precision. In my business, suspicion was not proof, and a missing document was not automatically evidence of fraud. A responsible investor had to distinguish between what was known, what was plausible, and what still required verification.

“Has Richard been told that the committee needs the information before proceeding?”

“Twice. Our legal team has also asked for confirmation of the company's representations regarding the proposed partnership.”

“And?”

“They keep referring to the transaction as if it's already agreed.”

I straightened.

“Have they publicly announced it?”

“Not in a formal release that we've seen. But Richard has been telling lenders and business contacts that the acquisition is effectively guaranteed. One lender contacted us this afternoon asking when the financing structure would be finalized.”

For several seconds, I said nothing.

A preliminary offer was not a completed transaction. It did not become binding merely because one party wanted it badly enough. We had discussed a potential acquisition of Precision Dynamics through an investment vehicle controlled by my firm, with the Whitmore Group expected to provide manufacturing facilities, technical expertise, and operational support in exchange for a substantial equity position.

The transaction had genuine strategic merit. Precision Dynamics manufactured advanced robotics components, and the Whitmore Group possessed facilities that could support a significant expansion. If the numbers held up and the contractual risks were manageable, the partnership could create considerable value.

But the investment committee had not given final approval. No definitive agreement had been signed. Our due diligence was incomplete.

Richard knew all of that.

“Michael,” I said, “I want the committee's current position in writing. I also want legal counsel to review every representation the Whitmore Group has made about our involvement.”

“We can do that.”

“Don't accuse them of anything we can't substantiate. Preserve the correspondence, identify the outstanding information, and make it clear that no final investment decision has been reached.”

“Understood.”

I paused.

“There's one more thing. I am at the Whitmore estate tonight, attending my daughter's engagement dinner.”

Michael was silent for a beat.

“I see.”

“I'm not asking you to change your assessment because of anything that has happened socially. If the investment is sound, I expect us to evaluate it fairly. If the risks are unacceptable, I expect us to act accordingly.”

“That is already how we're approaching it,” he said. “But I think you should know that our concerns are now more serious than they were three days ago.”

I looked back toward the drawing room. Through the open doorway, I could see Richard standing beside a marble fireplace, holding court among several guests.

“Then I think we need to resolve the question tonight.”

Michael understood what I meant.

“Would you like me to withdraw the preliminary offer?”

I considered the question carefully.

I had no intention of using my position to settle a personal score. Nor did I want to make an impulsive decision that might damage a viable company because its chairman had offended my family. But the investment had reached a point where continuing without complete information would be irresponsible.

“Withdraw the preliminary offer and suspend negotiations,” I said. “Tell the team that the committee will not reconsider until the outstanding documentation has been provided and independently reviewed. No exceptions.”

“Understood. I'll handle it.”

“And Michael?”

“Yes?”

“Please make sure the withdrawal is documented as a business decision based on the current state of due diligence. I don't want anyone confusing it with tonight's personal events.”

“I'll take care of it.”

I ended the call and stood quietly for another moment.

I felt neither triumph nor relief. A transaction worth $420 million was not a toy to be picked up or discarded to prove a point. It involved employees, lenders, suppliers, and investors whose lives could be affected by the outcome.

Yet there was a difference between making a decision because someone had insulted me and recognizing that their behavior had illuminated a risk I could no longer comfortably overlook.

The first would have been revenge.

The second was judgment.

I returned to the drawing room.

Victoria was standing near a table displaying framed photographs of the Whitmores at charity galas, private clubs, and business events. She was describing a recent trip to Europe to a woman wearing a diamond necklace that flashed whenever she turned her head.

Richard noticed me entering and smiled.

“There you are, Catherine. We wondered whether you'd managed to find your way back from the corridor.”

The remark earned him another small laugh.

I stopped beside a chair and looked at him.

“I was speaking with my investment team.”

“Business never sleeps, does it?” he said. “Although I imagine it must be easier when one doesn't have an entire conglomerate to manage.”

I took a sip of water.

“Different responsibilities create different challenges.”

“Indeed.” He adjusted his jacket. “Speaking of responsibilities, I understand you're involved in some sort of investment operation.”

“That's one way to describe it.”

“Small businesses?”

“Some. Larger companies as well.”

Richard's smile widened.

“Well, if you're interested in seeing how a serious manufacturing organization operates, you should visit one of our facilities sometime. The scale might surprise you.”

“I'll keep that in mind.”

He seemed pleased by my response. He had mistaken restraint for deference and assumed that my refusal to defend myself was evidence that I had little worth defending.

Victoria joined us.

“Richard, darling, the guests are asking about the new partnership.”

“Ah, yes.” He turned toward the others. “We have some exciting developments underway.”

One of the men beside him asked whether the proposed robotics acquisition was progressing.

Richard glanced at me, then answered with a confidence that made my stomach tighten.

“Everything is moving in the right direction. We're simply completing the final formalities.”

I said nothing.

He continued explaining how the transaction would expand his group's manufacturing capabilities and improve its position in several growing markets. He spoke about the expected returns, the facilities that would be upgraded, and the opportunities that would open for his children.

A guest congratulated him.

Victoria placed a hand on her husband's arm.

“We have worked very hard to create this future,” she said. “It means a great deal to us that the right people recognize what we've built.”

I wondered whether she would still be speaking that way if she knew the committee had just withdrawn its preliminary approval.

My phone vibrated again.

Michael had sent a brief confirmation that the withdrawal process was underway and that the investment committee's position had been documented. The message was short, precise, and entirely professional.

I read it once.

Then I placed my phone in my handbag.

Richard was still talking.

I could have interrupted him immediately. Instead, I waited until he finished explaining the supposed certainty of the transaction. I wanted to give him the opportunity to correct his own words before forcing him to confront the facts.

He did not.

When the conversation finally paused, I addressed him directly.

“Richard, may I ask you something about the acquisition?”

“Of course.” His smile suggested he was about to explain something complicated to a child. “I'm always happy to discuss business.”

“Have you told your lenders that the transaction has been finalized?”

His expression barely changed, but I noticed his fingers tighten around his glass.

“We've communicated that the deal is expected to close.”

“That wasn't my question.”

A woman beside Victoria looked between us.

Richard lowered his voice.

“I'm not sure why you're asking.”

“Because my investment team has received inquiries about statements suggesting that the partnership is already guaranteed.”

He stared at me for a moment.

Then he laughed.

“I think you've misunderstood the situation. These things are common in business. Lenders want reassurance, and we provide reasonable expectations.”

“Reasonable expectations aren't the same as a completed agreement.”

His smile thinned.

“Catherine, with respect, you may not be familiar with transactions of this scale.”

I held his gaze.

“I am familiar with the distinction between a preliminary offer and a signed agreement.”

For the first time, he looked genuinely uncertain.

Victoria stepped forward.

“Richard has spent months negotiating this deal. I'm sure he understands what he's doing.”

“Then he should have no difficulty answering the question.”

Her cheeks colored.

“You're being extraordinarily confrontational.”

“No. I'm asking for clarity.”

The room had begun to quiet again. Guests who had been discussing travel and investments were now listening without pretending otherwise.

Richard glanced around and gave a dismissive wave.

“This is a private family occasion. We can discuss commercial matters another time.”

“Certainly,” I replied. “With the appropriate financial advisers and legal representatives present.”

His eyes narrowed.

“What exactly are you suggesting?”

“Nothing beyond what I've said.”

I reached for my handbag.

Richard gave another short laugh, although this time it sounded forced.

“Are you calling someone to arrange your transportation?”

I looked at him.

“No.”

I took out my phone and opened Michael's contact.

“I'm calling the person who is responsible for our investment decision.”

Richard's smile disappeared.

Victoria stared at the phone in my hand.

I pressed the call button.

And while thirty wealthy guests watched from the drawing room, I waited for Michael to answer.

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: The Moment the Whitmores Discovered My Identity, Their Confidence Cracked Beneath a Truth They Could No Longer Control

Richard Whitmore had a particular way of laughing at other people's discomfort.
