The engagement ring remained on her finger, but she had turned it inward so that the stone rested against her palm.

Outside, the road curved between dark trees and large houses set far back from the pavement. The driver kept his eyes on the road, and the soft hum of the engine filled the silence.

I wanted to ask Emma what she was thinking. I also knew that she needed time to hear her own thoughts before anyone else's.

At last, she spoke.

“Were you going to tell me about the investment?”

“Not unless it became relevant.”

“Why?”

“Because your relationship with Andrew should have been yours. I didn't want my work to influence your decision about someone you loved.”

She looked toward the window.

“Would you have told me if the deal had gone through?”

“I might have mentioned that our firm was working with his father's company. But I would not have expected you to change how you felt about Andrew because of it.”

She was quiet for several seconds.

“Do you think I should have known what his family was like?”

“No one can know everything about another family before becoming part of it.”

“But I saw things.”

I turned toward her.

“What things?”

She rubbed her thumb across the edge of her ring.

“The way Victoria talks about people who work for them. The way Andrew apologizes for his parents without actually disagreeing with them. The way his father expects everyone to accept what he says because he's successful.”

She swallowed.

“I kept telling myself that those things didn't matter because Andrew was different when we were alone.”

“Was he?”

“Sometimes.” She looked at me. “But I think I wanted to believe that being kind to me was enough.”

I did not tell her what to do. A marriage was not a business transaction, and the decision to end an engagement could not be reduced to a list of risks and benefits.

Instead, I took her hand.

“You don't have to decide your entire future tonight. But you are allowed to take what you saw seriously.”

She leaned against my shoulder, and for the first time since the dinner began, she allowed herself to cry.

I held her while the car carried us toward the highway.

When we reached Boston the following morning, I went directly to my office. I had slept very little, partly because I was concerned about the Whitmore transaction and partly because I kept remembering Emma's expression when Andrew looked away.

My assistant had arranged an early meeting with Michael and our general counsel. By the time I entered the conference room, the relevant documents had been assembled in a secure folder, along with a timeline of the due diligence requests.

Michael stood beside the screen at the end of the table.

“Good morning, Catherine.”

“Let's begin with what we know.”

He displayed a summary of the proposed acquisition. Precision Dynamics was a profitable robotics supplier with valuable manufacturing technology and a customer base that could support further expansion. The proposed transaction would have allowed the Whitmore Group to participate in that growth through its manufacturing capacity and technical resources.

The strategic logic was still sound.

The problem lay in the information we had received from the Whitmore Group.

“Our team identified discrepancies in the timing of revenue recognition,” Michael explained. “Several customer accounts show substantial revenue near the end of reporting periods. We requested the contracts and related side agreements to confirm whether the recorded revenue was consistent with the actual contractual obligations.”

“And the response?”

“Three explanations, none supported by the complete documentation.”

Our general counsel opened another folder.

“The company has also described the proposed partnership in ways that could lead a reasonable listener to believe the transaction has been approved. We have not identified a definitive agreement or a final investment approval.”

“Have they made that representation directly to a lender?”

“We have a written inquiry from one lender asking us to confirm the status of the transaction. We don't yet have the full context of what the lender was told.”

I nodded.

“Then we need the full context before drawing conclusions.”

Michael moved to the next page.

“The investment committee has formally withdrawn its preliminary approval. The transaction will remain suspended until the requested information is provided and independently reviewed. We have also instructed the team not to make any statements about the company's financial condition beyond what the evidence supports.”

“Good. What happens next?”

“Our legal team will send a detailed request for clarification. We should also preserve all correspondence and prepare for questions from the lenders if they approach us again.”

I looked at the financial summary.

The Whitmore Group had substantial operations, valuable facilities, and a large workforce. A failed acquisition would be painful, but it would not automatically mean the company was insolvent. Whether it could refinance depended on its actual debt obligations, available cash, operating performance, and the conditions imposed by its lenders.

I wanted to keep those distinctions clear.

“Do not treat the withdrawal as a verdict on the entire company,” I said. “We are declining to invest under the present conditions. If the company supplies the missing documents, we will review them. If the evidence reveals additional problems, we will address those separately.”

Michael nodded.

“And Richard?”

“His behavior at the dinner is not the reason the committee withdrew approval. The financial concerns existed before I arrived at his house. But I will not pretend that the way he conducted himself has increased my confidence in his judgment.”

Our general counsel made a note.

“That's a distinction we can maintain in the record.”

The meeting continued for another hour. We discussed the information required from the Whitmore Group, the status of the preliminary offer, and the steps necessary to protect our firm and its investors.

By the time I returned to my office, I felt more settled. The decision had been made through the appropriate process, and the remaining questions could be addressed without allowing personal emotions to dictate the outcome.

Then my phone rang.

It was Richard Whitmore.

I considered letting the call go to voicemail, but I decided to answer.

“Richard.”

“Catherine, thank you for taking my call.”

His voice was noticeably different from the one I had heard the previous evening. The confidence remained, but it sounded strained, as though he were working hard to keep it in place.

“I have spoken with our advisers,” he continued. “I think we should meet as soon as possible.”

“Our teams can arrange that.”

“I'd prefer to speak with you directly first.”

“I understand. But given the questions raised about the transaction, any substantive discussion should include our advisers.”

He exhaled sharply.

“This is becoming unnecessarily complicated.”

“It became complicated when the documentation failed to support the assumptions in the financial model.”

“We have legitimate explanations for those matters.”

“Then I look forward to reviewing them.”

There was a pause.

“Catherine, I hope you understand that an acquisition of this size affects more than the two companies involved. We have employees, suppliers, and financial commitments. People have made plans based on the expectation that this deal would close.”

“I understand that.”

“Then surely you can see why withdrawing now is so damaging.”

“I can see why an uncompleted transaction would be disappointing. But that does not create an obligation for my firm to proceed without satisfactory due diligence.”

His tone hardened.

“You are making this sound as though we have done something wrong.”

“I am making it clear that we have not received the information needed to approve the investment.”

He fell silent.

I waited.

Finally, he said, “Victoria tells me you were offended by what happened at dinner.”

“I was concerned about how you both treated my daughter and me.”

“I apologize for the misunderstanding.”

I looked out at the city through my office window.

“Richard, an apology would be more meaningful if you acknowledged what actually happened.”

He gave a short, impatient breath.

“Fine. Victoria should not have spoken to you that way. I should not have made the comment about the staff. But you must understand that these dinners can become tense, and she was trying to manage the evening.”

“Your wife was not managing the evening. She was humiliating someone she believed had less social standing than she did.”

“Must we keep returning to that?”

“No. We can return to the business questions instead.”

He did not answer immediately.

I continued.

“Our legal team will contact your representatives with the outstanding requests. Please make sure they are addressed fully. I cannot promise that doing so will restore the transaction, but it is the appropriate next step.”

“Are you saying the deal might still happen?”

“I am saying that any future consideration depends on the evidence, the committee's assessment, and the terms of any proposal. I am making no promise beyond that.”

He seemed disappointed by the answer.

“Very well,” he said at last. “Have your people contact mine.”

The call ended.

I placed my phone on the desk and returned to the documents in front of me.

The conversation had confirmed what I suspected: Richard wanted reassurance that the acquisition could still be saved, but he was reluctant to accept that the conditions for approval were not optional.

I wondered whether that reluctance had affected the way his executives responded to our earlier requests.

The next development came shortly before noon.

Michael entered my office carrying a printed email from the lender that had contacted us. The bank had requested confirmation that the proposed acquisition remained subject to due diligence and final approval. It also wanted clarification about the status of the strategic partnership Richard had described to them.

“They're asking for a written response by the end of the day,” Michael said.

“Have they provided the statement they're concerned about?”

“They have sent us an excerpt from the correspondence they received from the Whitmore Group. It refers to the transaction as secured and describes the financing structure as being in its final stages.”

I read the excerpt carefully.

It did not prove that Richard had knowingly misrepresented the deal. The language could have been used loosely, or it might have been written by someone who misunderstood the status of the negotiations. But the wording was more definite than the actual position justified.

“Prepare an accurate response,” I said. “State that the transaction has not been finalized, that no definitive agreement has been signed, and that our preliminary approval has been withdrawn pending resolution of the outstanding due diligence issues.”

“Should we copy the Whitmore Group?”

“Send it through the appropriate legal channels. We should not surprise their advisers, but we cannot allow a lender to rely on an inaccurate description of our position.”

Michael nodded and left.

I sat back in my chair, thinking about the previous evening.

At dinner, Richard had behaved as though the world were divided into people who mattered and people who did not. Victoria had treated courtesy as something that could be withheld from anyone she considered beneath her. Andrew had tried to preserve the peace by remaining silent.

Now the consequences of those habits were beginning to emerge in a setting where charm and social standing could not substitute for documentation.

Still, I was careful not to confuse the two matters. The insult had not caused the financial discrepancies. My withdrawal had not created the lender's questions. Those issues existed independently, and they would have required attention even if I had never met the Whitmores socially.

The dinner had simply brought several uncomfortable truths into the same room.

That afternoon, Emma called me from her apartment.

“Mom, can I come over tonight?”

“Of course.”

“I don't want to talk about the business.”

“Then we won't.”

She arrived a little after seven, carrying a small paper bag from the bakery near her apartment. She had changed into jeans and a soft gray sweater, and her hair was tied back carelessly. Without the formal dress and engagement ring, she looked younger, almost like the girl who used to sit at my kitchen counter doing homework while I reviewed financial reports after work.

We made tea and sat at the kitchen table.

For a while, she told me about ordinary things: a project at work, a friend who had moved to another city, a restaurant she wanted to try. I let her talk until she finally put down her cup.

“I think I need to postpone the wedding.”

I had expected the possibility, but hearing her say it made the decision feel real.

“Have you told Andrew?”

“Not yet.”

“What do you want him to understand?”

She looked down at her hands.

“That I love him. But I don't know whether I can marry someone who lets his parents decide how everyone should be treated.”

I waited.

“He keeps saying he was trying to avoid a confrontation,” she continued. “But every time he says that, I think about how easy it was for him to let them hurt you.”

“Emma, I don't want you to make this decision for my sake.”

“I know.”

“I can handle what happened. You are the one who has to live with the marriage.”

She nodded, her eyes filling.

“That's what scares me. What happens when it's not a dinner? What happens when we have children, or when we have to make a decision his parents don't like? Will he stand beside me, or will he ask me to be patient until everyone else is comfortable?”

I reached across the table and took her hand.

“Those are fair questions.”

She wiped her cheek.

“I keep thinking that if he loves me enough, he'll change.”

“People can change,” I said. “But you cannot build your future on a change someone else has not chosen to make.”

She sat quietly for a long time.

Finally, she slipped the engagement ring from her finger and placed it beside her teacup.

“I need to know who I am without constantly trying to make his family happy.”

I looked at the ring resting on the wooden table.

It was a beautiful piece of jewelry, carefully chosen and expensive enough to attract attention. But it could not answer the question Emma was asking herself.

I covered her hand with mine.

“Then take the time you need.”

She leaned forward and embraced me.

For the first time since the dinner, her tears did not seem to come from embarrassment. They came from the difficult recognition that love, by itself, could not guarantee a healthy marriage.

Outside, the evening settled over Boston. The lights of neighboring buildings flickered on, and the ordinary sounds of traffic drifted through the window.

I did not know what Andrew would say when Emma told him her decision. I did not know whether Richard would provide the missing contracts or whether the lenders would uncover further problems in the company's financial records.

But I knew that two important decisions were now beyond the Whitmores' control.

My firm would not invest until the evidence justified doing so.

And my daughter would no longer promise her future to a man simply because she hoped he would eventually find the courage to stand up for her.

The next morning, Richard's lawyers sent our team a formal response.

They disputed the suggestion that the company had misrepresented the transaction, insisted that the missing documents were being assembled, and requested a meeting to discuss the possibility of reinstating the preliminary offer.

They also attached a partial set of customer agreements.

Michael called me after reviewing the submission.

“Catherine, we have the first documents. But several of the agreements still appear to be missing, and the material we've received raises additional questions about the timing of the revenue.”

“Have the auditors reviewed them?”

“They've started. They want the complete set before reaching any conclusion.”

I looked at the calendar on my desk. The Whitmore Group had been given another opportunity to provide the information requested, and now we had evidence that the review was moving forward, even if the questions remained unresolved.

“Continue the review,” I said. “No assumptions, either way. We need to understand exactly what these contracts say and how they relate to the reported revenue.”

Michael paused.

“There is one more issue. The bank has asked for a meeting with the Whitmore Group's finance team. They want a clear explanation of the proposed acquisition and the statements made about it.”

“Then they should receive one.”

“I suspect Richard will be under pressure to provide it.”

I glanced at the partial agreements on my screen.

“Pressure is not the same as proof of wrongdoing. Let's establish the facts before deciding what the consequences should be.”

When I ended the call, I understood that the most difficult part of the story was only beginning.

The Whitmores had lost the certainty they had built around the acquisition, but the unanswered financial questions could have implications far beyond a single investment.

And while their advisers prepared explanations for the lenders, I had to consider a different question of my own: whether the business could still be evaluated on its merits, or whether the missing information would ultimately reveal risks too serious to overlook.

Click here to continue reading: PART 5: The Contracts Finally Arrived, but One Missing Signature Threatened to Unravel Everything Richard Had Told His Lenders

The drive away from the Whitmore estate was quiet.
