His name was Thomas Reed, and he spoke with the measured patience of someone accustomed to hearing people describe events differently depending on what they feared losing. Evelyn sat beside me at the dining table, while my attorney joined us by telephone. The blue envelope containing Daniel’s lottery ticket remained locked in my study.

Thomas began with the disputed claim. He asked me to describe when Daniel had given me the ticket, what he had said, where I had kept it, and whether anyone else had ever handled it. I answered carefully, separating what I remembered from what I could only assume. When he asked why I had waited exactly a year, I explained Daniel’s request and showed him the original envelope bearing the handwritten instruction.

He examined the envelope without removing the ticket, then photographed Daniel’s writing. He wanted to know whether I had discussed the ticket with Marcus before the anniversary. I told him I had not. As far as I knew, Marcus had learned about it through whatever investigation led him to submit his own claim.

Thomas made a note. “That distinction matters. We need to establish what the claimant knew, when he knew it, and how he obtained the information.”

I asked whether the disputed signature could be traced to a specific person. He explained that document examiners could compare it with genuine samples and that investigators would also need the notary’s records. A forged signature could establish wrongdoing, but identifying the person responsible required evidence beyond the appearance of the handwriting.

“What about the photographs Marcus submitted?” I asked.

“We have requested the originals and the associated metadata. We are also reviewing the account history connected with the filing.”

He did not promise a quick answer. I appreciated that. Too many people had already offered me certainty when they possessed little more than an opinion.

After the interview, Thomas requested permission to receive the financial records Daniel had preserved through Evelyn. She provided a documented inventory, identifying each folder and explaining how the materials had been stored. Nothing was handed over casually. Copies were made, and the original files remained preserved so that investigators could verify their authenticity.

That afternoon, I sat with my own notes and began organizing the transactions Daniel had marked. I arranged them by date, amount, vendor, and approving executive. The pattern was easier to see when I stopped treating each invoice as a separate problem.

Several payments had passed through companies that appeared unrelated on paper but shared the same registered agent. Some invoices used nearly identical descriptions, even when they supposedly covered different projects. In two instances, payments had been split into smaller amounts within days of one another. Each individual payment looked less conspicuous than the total.

I highlighted the entries and checked the dates against the records I already had. The same approval code appeared beside several transactions. It did not prove who had initiated them, but it suggested that the payments had passed through a common internal process.

I sent the analysis to my attorney, who arranged for it to be included in the material provided to the investigators. I did not try to contact the vendors myself. Their ownership and banking information would need to be obtained through proper channels, and an amateur inquiry could alert someone who might destroy records.

Three days later, Thomas called with an update.

The lottery filing had been submitted months before my anniversary, and the supporting documents contained information that was not publicly available. The claimant had described the ticket’s purchase as a company transaction, but the initial records did not substantiate that account. Investigators were examining whether the purported transfer document had been created after Daniel’s death.

Thomas also told me that the notary listed on the document had confirmed that a notarization had taken place. However, the notary’s records did not establish that I had personally appeared or signed the document in the manner claimed.

I wrote down his words.

“Does that mean the signature was forged?”

“It means the records do not currently support the claimant’s account. We are still gathering evidence.”

I thanked him and ended the call. The distinction between suspicion and proof had become the most important discipline in my life. Marcus had relied on confident statements to make his demands sound inevitable. I would not make the same mistake by claiming more than the evidence established.

That evening, he appeared at my front door.

I had not invited him, and he had not called ahead. He stood on the porch in a navy coat, holding a slim folder beneath one arm. When I opened the door, he glanced past me toward the hallway, as though expecting Evelyn or my attorney to be waiting inside.

“Can we talk privately?” he asked.

“About what?”

“The situation has become unnecessarily complicated.”

I remained in the doorway. “You can speak here.”

He gave me a tight smile. “I hear you've been cooperating with investigators.”

“I've answered their questions.”

“About a lottery ticket that belongs to the company.”

“Then you should have no difficulty proving the company owns it.”

His expression hardened. “You don't understand how Daniel handled certain matters. He made decisions that were never entered into the formal accounts.”

“Then show me the records establishing those decisions.”

Marcus looked down at the folder he was holding. For the first time, he seemed unsure which argument would work best.

“I have a proposal,” he said. “The company will withdraw its claim against the house. You can retain a reasonable settlement from the estate, and we can resolve the ticket dispute without making this a public spectacle.”

“What happens to the $91 million?”

“That money would belong to the company, naturally. You would receive a generous portion.”

I studied him. “You want me to surrender a winning ticket in exchange for money you haven't specified, while the company withdraws a debt you haven't proved.”

“That's a crude way of putting it.”

“It's an accurate way.”

He stepped closer to the threshold. “Claire, you're grieving. I know that. But Daniel's affairs were complicated, and you cannot afford to turn every disagreement into a personal battle.”

I felt my anger settle into something colder.

“You came here because you want the ticket. You brought a document with my signature on it. And now you're offering to withdraw your claim against my home if I give you what you want.”

His face changed at the mention of the document. It lasted only a moment, but I noticed.

“I have no idea what document you're talking about,” he said.

“Then you won't mind explaining your position to the investigators.”

He closed the folder.

“You are making a serious mistake.”

“Perhaps. But I won't make it by signing something I haven't verified.”

Marcus turned and walked down the steps. He did not look back.

I closed the door and immediately wrote down the conversation, including his offer to withdraw the house claim. I sent the notes to my attorney, who forwarded them to Thomas. I could not know whether the conversation would prove useful, but preserving it accurately was the right course.

The following week brought a different development. My attorney received a formal response concerning the alleged debt. Mercer Development had produced additional schedules and copies of internal approvals, but several documents referred to transactions that did not appear in the original accounting summaries.

I reviewed the material with her over two long meetings. One schedule listed a payment as a consulting expense, while a separate report described the same amount as a construction management fee. The vendor name had been shortened in one record and expanded in another. The approval dates were inconsistent.

A particularly troubling entry showed a transfer authorized under Daniel’s credentials during the period when he had been hospitalized. The company claimed that the authorization had been completed electronically, but the audit trail had not yet been supplied.

I remembered the recording. Daniel had said he was still trying to establish where the money went when his health deteriorated.

I began to understand why he had preserved so many separate records. He had not possessed the complete picture. He had been gathering fragments, hoping that the fragments would eventually connect.

My attorney warned me that the documents could support several explanations, including negligent bookkeeping or deliberate misrepresentation. We would need more than inconsistent descriptions to establish fraud. Nevertheless, the discrepancies undermined the confidence with which the company had presented its alleged debt.

She prepared a formal challenge to the claim and requested the underlying agreements, transaction logs, and original approval records. The company’s lawyers objected to parts of the request, but they could no longer pretend that I had simply refused to cooperate.

For the first time in months, I felt that the legal process was moving in a direction I could understand.

Then Vivian called.

She had never telephoned me alone before, and her voice sounded unusually gentle. She asked whether I was available for lunch and said she wanted to clear the air.

I agreed to meet her at a café near the courthouse, choosing a public place where there would be no ambiguity about the purpose of the meeting. Vivian arrived wearing a cream-colored coat and carrying a handbag I recognized from a photograph of a recent company event.

She ordered tea and waited until the server had left.

“Marcus is under a great deal of pressure,” she said. “The company has employees who depend on it. You know that.”

“I do.”

“He believes Daniel made arrangements that were never properly documented. He's trying to prevent a financial disaster.”

“Then the documents should establish what happened.”

Vivian stirred her tea long after the sugar had dissolved.

“You have to understand that Daniel wasn't always easy to work with. He could be secretive. He sometimes made decisions without explaining them to the rest of the family.”

“That doesn't establish ownership of the ticket.”

She looked up sharply.

“Why are you so determined to make this personal?”

I almost laughed. Marcus had visited my house to demand the ticket and threatened me with legal consequences. His company had pursued my home using a debt I could not verify. Yet Vivian was asking why I had made the situation personal.

“I didn't create the dispute,” I said. “I'm asking for evidence.”

She leaned forward.

“What if I told you that some of the people at the company believe Marcus has gone too far?”

I studied her face. “Are you telling me that because you have evidence, or because you want me to say something you can take back to him?”

Her expression stiffened.

“I thought you might appreciate an honest conversation.”

“I would. If you have information relevant to the investigation, give it to the investigators.”

She finished her tea without answering.

When we parted, Vivian touched my arm and said she hoped we could avoid destroying the family over money. I watched her walk toward her car and wondered whether she had come to warn me, manipulate me, or discover how much I knew.

I did not assume the answer. I wrote down what she had said and forwarded my notes to my attorney.

Two days later, Thomas requested another interview. The investigators had received additional information about the vendors Daniel had flagged. At least two appeared to have business connections that were not disclosed in the company’s records. Investigators were examining whether the same individuals controlled multiple entities and whether payments had ultimately benefited people associated with Mercer Development.

Thomas was careful not to name anyone as responsible. He explained that the financial trail was still being reconstructed.

Then he asked me a question that changed the direction of the conversation.

“Mrs. Mercer, did your husband ever mention a second set of company records?”

I thought of the folders on the laptop, the handwritten stars, and the secure storage device Evelyn had shown me.

“He mentioned that he was preserving records. I don't know whether there is another set.”

Thomas nodded. “We found a reference to an archive in one of the materials submitted by his attorney. It appears to have been created before his final hospitalization.”

I felt a small tightening in my chest.

“Where is it?”

“We're trying to establish that. The reference includes a location identifier, but it doesn't correspond to the storage device already provided.”

I called Evelyn after the interview. She checked her inventory and confirmed that she had retained everything Daniel had specifically entrusted to her, but she had never seen a separate archive under that identifier.

We searched the documents together, looking for the reference number. It appeared in a short handwritten note among Daniel's personal records. Beside it were three words: ORIGINALS — NOT OFFICE.

Evelyn stared at the note.

“Daniel was very deliberate about the language he used,” she said.

“Do you know what it means?”

“No. But if he wanted these records kept away from the company office, he may have been concerned about who could access them.”

I read the note again. The handwriting was unmistakably Daniel's, and the date fell less than a month before he entered hospice care.

For the first time, I wondered whether the evidence we had been examining was only a portion of what he had discovered.

And if a separate archive still existed, someone else might be looking for it, too.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: A Forgotten Reference in Daniel’s Handwriting Led Me Toward Records Someone Had Worked Hard to Keep Out of Sight

The investigator arrived at my home on a Tuesday morning, carrying a leather folder and a small digital recorder.
