Ethan's warning had left me suspicious of both of them, and I had no intention of allowing either person to dictate what I should investigate. If Vanessa had information relevant to the company, I wanted it documented through the appropriate channels. If she had information about my marriage, I wanted to hear it directly rather than through another carefully worded message.

I called her from Rebecca's office so that the conversation could be handled with proper boundaries. Rebecca listened while I explained what I wanted to ask, then reminded me not to promise confidentiality or encourage Vanessa to provide anything she was not legally entitled to share. If she produced business records, those would be preserved separately from any personal correspondence.

Vanessa answered on the fourth ring.

“What do you want, Laurel?”

“To understand why you came to my wedding and why Ethan thinks you have information I should know.”

She went silent.

“I don't think this is a good idea.”

“You called me after the wedding. You told me to ask Ethan why he kept making promises to both of us. Now he's telling me to ask you why you came. I'm tired of receiving fragments of conversations that leave me guessing.”

“Ethan said that?”

“Yes.”

I heard a chair scrape across the floor on her end of the call.

“Meet me tomorrow,” she said. “Somewhere public. And don't bring Ethan.”

“I have no intention of meeting him.”

We arranged to meet at a quiet hotel café in the business district. I informed Rebecca of the appointment and agreed to keep the conversation focused on what Vanessa chose to disclose. I would not record her secretly or make promises about what I would do with the information. I wanted answers, not another argument.

The following afternoon, I arrived ten minutes early. The café smelled of roasted coffee and polished wood, and soft music played beneath the conversations of people working on laptops. I chose a table near the window and ordered tea.

Vanessa arrived wearing a charcoal coat and dark trousers. Without the red dress and the confident smile she had worn at the wedding, she looked older and more tired than I remembered. She glanced around before sitting down, as though she expected Ethan to appear from behind one of the columns.

“He doesn't know I'm here,” she said.

“Good. Let's keep it that way.”

She wrapped both hands around the cup the server placed before her.

“I suppose you think I came to your wedding to humiliate you.”

“I think you knew that asking to ride in the bridal car would put me in an uncomfortable position. I want to know why you did it.”

Vanessa stared at the coffee.

“Ethan told me he wanted me there.”

The words were so unexpected that I initially thought I had misheard her.

“He invited you to my wedding?”

“Not to the ceremony. He told me he would be leaving in the limousine after the vows, and that I should meet him near the garden entrance.”

I felt my stomach tighten.

“Why?”

“He said he needed to speak to me. He told me it would be easier if I caught him before he went to the reception.”

“Then why did you ask to ride with us?”

“Because that was what he told me to do if he couldn't get away from the guests.”

I watched her carefully.

“Did he tell you to ask me to move?”

“No. He said he'd handle it.”

I remembered Ethan's immediate response, the way he had defended her before she finished speaking, and the ease with which he had told me to make room. At the time, I had interpreted his behavior as thoughtless entitlement. Now it seemed possible that he had expected Vanessa to appear.

“What did he want to discuss?”

Vanessa rubbed her thumb along the rim of her cup.

“The company payments. He said the investigation might become serious, and he wanted to know which documents I still had.”

I leaned forward.

“Why would he ask you about company documents?”

“Because my firm received the payments. I have invoices, emails, and some of the project files. He said the accountants were looking at transactions from months ago, and that he needed to understand what they had found.”

“Did he ask you to destroy anything?”

Her eyes lifted sharply.

“No.”

I waited.

“He asked me whether I still had the original records,” she continued. “He wanted to know if I had kept the emails about the consulting arrangement. I told him I had. He became angry and said the documents could be misinterpreted.”

“Were they legitimate business records?”

“Some were. Some of the projects were real, but not every invoice represented work we completed.”

The admission left me struggling to keep my expression neutral.

“Explain that.”

Vanessa took a breath.

“When Ethan first approached me about consulting, he described several development opportunities he said Whitmore was considering. My firm prepared market summaries and preliminary research for some of them. We were paid for that work. Later, he began requesting additional invoices connected to broader strategic services. He said the company needed to allocate money to the consulting budget before the end of the quarter.”

“Did you perform the services described on those invoices?”

“Not all of them.”

“Then why did you submit them?”

Her gaze fell to the table.

“I told myself the money would cover future work. Ethan said the projects were going ahead and that we would complete the assignments later. I didn't insist on getting everything in writing because I trusted him.”

I felt a sharp, bitter irony at those words.

“You trusted him.”

“Yes.”

“And you knew he was engaged to me?”

Vanessa flinched.

“Yes.”

“When did you find out?”

“Before he proposed.”

I looked away toward the street. Cars moved through the afternoon traffic, their windows reflecting the gray sky. A man at the next table was laughing over something on his phone. The ordinary world continued while my understanding of my own marriage shifted again.

“Were you still romantically involved with him when he proposed?”

Vanessa did not answer immediately.

“We had been trying to decide whether to get back together,” she said at last. “He told me he needed time. He said he couldn't make a decision while his career was uncertain, and that he wanted to establish himself before choosing what came next.”

“He was dating me at the same time.”

“Yes.”

“And he proposed to me while you believed you might reconcile.”

Her fingers tightened around the cup.

“He told me he had ended things with you.”

I stared at her.

“What?”

“He said you had been seeing each other casually, but that it wasn't serious. He told me he was free to make his own decisions.”

I almost laughed at the absurdity of it. Ethan had told me Vanessa was a closed chapter. Apparently, he had told Vanessa that I was barely a chapter at all.

“Did you believe him?”

“I wanted to.”

That answer was honest enough to hurt.

I took a slow breath.

“Why did you come to the wedding if you thought he had chosen me?”

“Because he contacted me the night before and said we needed to settle something. He told me that once the wedding was over, there would be no more opportunities to speak privately. I thought he was going to explain why he had continued making promises to me.”

“And instead, he told you to get into the bridal car.”

“Yes.”

“Did you know what he was going to say to me?”

“No. I didn't know he would tell you to move. When he did, I could have walked away. I should have. But I was angry, and I wanted to see whether he would stand by what he had told me.”

Her voice became quieter.

“I wanted to know if he would choose me when he had to make the choice in front of you.”

The confession was ugly, but it was also more revealing than any apology could have been.

“You used my wedding as a test.”

Vanessa closed her eyes briefly.

“Yes.”

I felt my hands trembling beneath the table. I placed them flat against my knees.

“You could have contacted me before the wedding. You could have told me what was happening.”

“I know.”

“You could have refused to participate in it.”

“I know that, too.”

“Then why should I believe anything else you tell me?”

She looked at me directly.

“You shouldn't believe me because I'm asking you to. You should verify the records.”

For the first time, she sounded less interested in defending herself than in explaining what she could prove.

She told me that her company still retained the invoices, correspondence, and project files. She said some emails documented actual research, while others showed Ethan asking her to submit invoices for work that had not yet been performed. She did not claim to know what happened to every dollar after it left her firm's account.

I asked whether she had transferred money to Ethan personally.

“No,” she said. “Not directly.”

“Did you pay any of his personal expenses?”

She hesitated.

“I paid for some things when we were together. Dinners, travel, gifts. But I can't tell you what the accountants will find in the company records. You need to examine the transactions.”

I told her not to send me private company documents directly. If she wanted to cooperate, Rebecca could arrange a formal process for providing the records to the investigators.

Vanessa nodded.

“I'll do that.”

Before we left, I asked her one final question.

“Did you know Ethan intended to marry me when he made those consulting arrangements?”

“Yes,” she whispered. “He told me he was marrying you because your family could give him the future he wanted.”

The café seemed to become unnaturally quiet.

“What future?”

“He said Whitmore was growing, that your father trusted you, and that you would eventually have more control over the business. He thought marrying you would make him part of the family and put him in a stronger position.”

I sat motionless.

“Did he say he was marrying me for the company?”

“He didn't use those exact words. He said that being with you would open doors he couldn't open on his own.”

I wanted to reject the statement. I wanted to tell myself Vanessa was angry, jealous, and eager to hurt me because she had lost Ethan. But the financial records had already raised questions about his motives, and the threat he had sent after the board meeting had revealed how he viewed my position.

I could not accept her account as established fact. Yet I could no longer dismiss it as impossible.

I stood and collected my bag.

“If you have evidence, provide it to the investigators. Don't contact me to negotiate your own position, and don't ask me to protect you from the consequences of your decisions.”

Vanessa rose slowly.

“I understand.”

“No,” I said, meeting her eyes. “I don't think either of us understood what was happening until it was too late.”

I left the café without waiting for an answer.

When I reached the pavement, the air felt colder than it had when I arrived. I called Rebecca and told her that Vanessa was willing to provide documents concerning Vantage Strategic Solutions. I summarized the admissions she had made, making it clear which statements I had heard directly and which remained unverified.

Rebecca thanked me and said she would contact Vanessa through the appropriate channel.

Then I called my mother.

She answered immediately.

“Are you all right?”

“I don't know yet,” I said. “But I know more than I did yesterday.”

I told her what Vanessa had said about the wedding, the consulting invoices, and Ethan's explanation of our relationship.

My mother listened quietly.

When I finished, she said, “Whatever his reasons were, you are not responsible for the choices he made before or after he married you.”

I leaned against the side of my car and closed my eyes.

“I keep wondering whether I should have seen it.”

“You saw what he allowed you to see. Now you have more information, and you can decide what to do with it.”

That evening, Rebecca confirmed that she had contacted Vanessa. The accountants would receive any records through a documented process and assess them alongside the materials already collected.

I sat in my childhood bedroom, looking at the garment bag containing my wedding dress. For days, I had treated the wedding car as the moment everything broke apart. Now I understood that it had been the moment the fractures became impossible to ignore.

Ethan had not merely failed to defend me. He had arranged an encounter in which he expected me to accommodate another woman, then used my reaction as evidence that I was unreasonable.

Whether he had planned every detail or simply believed he could control the situation, the result was the same.

I had been expected to make room for his past while he kept the truth about our future to himself.

And I was finished making that room.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: The Documents Vanessa Handed to the Investigators Confirmed Some of Her Story, but One Email Forced Me to Reconsider Ethan’s Entire Motive

I waited until the next morning before contacting Vanessa.
