She nearly let it go to voicemail, assuming the school wanted to discuss a forgotten permission slip or a change to the upcoming class schedule.

Instead, Mrs. Carter greeted her with unusual enthusiasm.

“I wanted to ask whether Dustin could bring his slideshow to our next parent meeting.”

Becca leaned back in her chair.

“His slideshow from the fair?”

“Yes. The principal saw it, and several parents have mentioned how much they appreciated his presentation. We'd like to use it as an example of the children's work and the importance of recognizing everyone's contributions.”

Becca glanced toward the photograph pinned beside her desk. Dustin and she stood in their matching pumpkin costumes, both laughing at something outside the frame.

“Does Dustin know about this?”

“Not yet. I wanted to speak with you first. I don't want him to feel pressured to repeat something he did for personal reasons.”

Becca appreciated that consideration. Her son had not prepared the presentation to become an example for other parents. He had prepared it because he wanted people to see the work his mother had done, and because he had been hurt by the way she was treated.

“I'll ask him how he feels,” she said. “But I don't want the school to turn it into a story about a child correcting adults.”

Mrs. Carter agreed immediately.

“Of course. We would focus on teamwork, kindness, and the children's creativity. We won't discuss his family situation.”

After they ended the call, Becca sat quietly for a moment. She felt proud that Dustin's work had been noticed, but she also felt protective of the part of the story that belonged to him alone. His feelings were not a classroom lesson to be displayed without his consent.

That evening, she explained the invitation while they were eating dinner.

“Mrs. Carter wants to show your slideshow at a parent meeting,” she said. “She thinks it could help people appreciate the children's work.”

Dustin looked up from his plate.

“Will everyone see the pictures of us?”

“Possibly. But you can say no. You don't owe anyone another presentation.”

He considered the invitation carefully.

“Would Dad be there?”

“Probably. I don't know whether Annabelle would come.”

Dustin pushed a piece of broccoli around his plate.

“I don't mind showing the pictures again. I just don't want people asking me about the argument.”

“Then we can tell Mrs. Carter that. If she can't keep the presentation separate from the argument, we won't do it.”

He nodded and took another bite of dinner.

“Okay. I think I'd like to show it.”

Becca smiled.

“Then we'll let her know.”

She sent Mrs. Carter a message the next morning, explaining that Dustin was happy to share his work provided the school did not ask him to discuss the disagreement between the adults. Mrs. Carter replied that she understood and thanked Becca for making the boundary clear.

For the next several days, the matter remained quiet. Dustin concentrated on school, and Becca returned to her usual routine. Nigel sent a message asking whether Dustin had been sleeping well, and Becca answered that he seemed fine. She did not ask for another report about Annabelle, nor did she demand proof that the comments had stopped.

She wanted to give the adults room to change without turning every interaction into a test.

On Friday evening, however, Nigel called with a question she had not expected.

“Mrs. Carter invited me to the parent meeting,” he said. “She mentioned Dustin might show his slideshow again.”

“He agreed to it.”

“Did you tell him I would be there?”

“He asked whether you might come. I told him you probably would.”

Nigel was quiet for a moment.

“I want to make sure he doesn't think I'm coming because I want to check what he says.”

“Then tell him why you're coming.”

“I want to support him.”

“That's a good reason.”

He paused.

“Would Annabelle be welcome?”

Becca did not answer immediately. She knew the question was not simply about a school meeting. Annabelle had apologized, and Becca had agreed to let her actions speak for themselves. Excluding her automatically would not necessarily help Dustin feel secure, but inviting her without considering his feelings would repeat the mistake that had caused the original problem.

“I think you should ask Dustin how he feels,” Becca said. “He doesn't get to decide every adult invitation, but his comfort matters.”

Nigel agreed to speak to him.

When the call ended, Becca returned to her work. She had learned that the most useful boundary was often a simple one: the adults could manage their relationships, but they could not demand that a child ignore his own feelings to make those relationships easier.

The parent meeting was scheduled for the following Wednesday evening. By then, the school had prepared a short program featuring several student projects, including a display of the children's paper pumpkins. Mrs. Carter sent Becca a message confirming that Dustin would have a few minutes to speak and that the photographs would be shown exactly as he had arranged them.

On Tuesday night, Dustin came into the living room carrying the flash drive.

“Mom, I want to add one picture.”

Becca looked up from her book.

“Which one?”

“The picture from the fair when you and I were standing together after the ring toss.”

He found the photograph on her phone and asked her to send him a copy. She watched him add it to the end of the presentation, then checked that the file played properly.

The picture showed them holding the stuffed fox between them. Becca's pumpkin costume was wrinkled, and Dustin's face was flushed from the cold. Neither of them was looking directly at the camera because he had been telling her that the ring-toss game was unfair.

“Why do you want to add this one?” she asked.

“Because I want people to see that we had fun.”

Becca smiled.

“That's a good reason.”

He saved the presentation and put the flash drive into his backpack.

Before going to bed, he asked whether he needed to wear his pumpkin costume again. Becca laughed and told him that a regular shirt would be perfectly acceptable. He seemed disappointed for about three seconds before deciding that he would wear his favorite blue sweatshirt instead.

On Wednesday evening, the school auditorium filled with parents, teachers, and children carrying folders of artwork. The room smelled of coffee and the faint chemical scent of fresh paint. Rows of folding chairs faced a projector screen, and a table near the entrance displayed the paper pumpkins from the fall fair.

Becca arrived with Dustin shortly before the program began. Nigel was already there, standing near the back of the auditorium. When he saw them, he approached with a smile.

“Hey, buddy. Ready?”

Dustin nodded.

“Mostly.”

Nigel crouched slightly so he could look his son in the eye.

“I'm proud of you for sharing your work.”

Dustin studied his face, apparently checking whether the words were sincere.

“Thanks, Dad.”

Nigel glanced toward Becca.

“Annabelle isn't coming tonight. She thought it might be better to give Dustin some space.”

Becca nodded. She did not know whether the decision came from genuine consideration or lingering discomfort, but it seemed appropriate for the occasion.

They found seats near the aisle. Dustin sat between his parents, his backpack resting against his shoes. When the principal welcomed everyone, he straightened and folded his hands in his lap.

Several students presented drawings, science projects, and short reports about their classroom activities. One child described a homemade bird feeder, another showed photographs from a community garden, and a third read a poem about autumn leaves.

Then Mrs. Carter introduced Dustin.

She explained that his slideshow documented the children's work at the fall fair and showed how different contributions had come together to create something the whole class could enjoy.

Dustin walked to the front carrying the flash drive. He connected it to the laptop, waited for the first photograph to appear, and adjusted the microphone.

The grocery-store picture came first, followed by the cupcakes, the paper pumpkins, and the costumes. The audience smiled at the familiar images, and Dustin explained who had helped with each part.

This time, he spoke without the tension that had marked his presentation at the fair.

He thanked his mother for helping him make the costumes and bake the cupcakes. He thanked his teacher for organizing the class decorations. He acknowledged the parents who had volunteered their time and Annabelle, who had purchased the lanterns and banner.

Nigel listened with his hands folded between his knees. He was proud of his son, but he also felt a quiet shame when he remembered how quickly he had dismissed the boy's feelings at the fair.

Then the final photograph appeared.

It showed Becca and Dustin standing together, holding the stuffed fox between them. Their costumes were crooked, their hair untidy, and their smiles completely unplanned.

Dustin looked at the screen.

“I like this picture best,” he said. “Because it reminds me that we had fun making things together.”

The room remained quiet for a moment before the audience applauded.

It was not the loud, surprised applause from the fair. It was warmer and more measured, the kind people offered when they recognized something sincere.

Becca felt Nigel shift beside her. When she glanced at him, he was looking at their son with an expression she had not seen in a long time.

After the presentation, parents gathered around the display of paper pumpkins. Several complimented Dustin on his slideshow, while others asked where they could find the instructions for making the costumes. Mrs. Carter thanked Becca for allowing the photographs to be shown.

Dustin accepted the attention with a shy smile. He was pleased, but he did not seem overwhelmed by it. Once the conversation turned to the next school project, he began asking whether the class could make decorations for the winter fair.

Nigel waited until they were outside before speaking.

“I want to apologize to you, too,” he told Dustin.

Dustin looked up.

“For what?”

“For making you feel as though you had to choose between your mother and me. For laughing when I should have spoken up. And for asking you to be respectful without making sure the adults were behaving respectfully themselves.”

Dustin held his backpack strap.

“Okay.”

“I know saying sorry doesn't change what happened. But I want you to know that I'm working on it.”

Dustin considered his father for a moment.

“Can I still tell you when something makes me mad?”

“Always.”

“Even if it's about Annabelle?”

“Especially then. You don't have to agree with everything she says, and you don't have to pretend you're happy when you're not.”

Dustin nodded. He did not hug his father immediately, and Nigel did not insist that he should. They walked toward the parking lot together, talking about the science project Dustin wanted to build for school.

Becca followed a few steps behind, giving them room.

She could not know whether the new understanding would survive the next difficult conversation. But she could see that Nigel had stopped asking his son to make the adults comfortable before allowing him to speak honestly.

For now, that was enough.

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: Just When Becca Thought the Family Had Finally Found Some Peace, Annabelle Asked for a Conversation That Could Change Everything

The following Tuesday, Becca received a call from Mrs. Carter while she was finishing a stack of paperwork at her desk.
