The boy sat cross-legged on the living-room floor, a ruler beside his knee and several wooden craft sticks arranged in careful rows. He had spent most of the morning explaining how the bridge would distribute weight across its supports, but now he was staring at a small gap where two pieces refused to meet.

“What's the problem?” Nigel asked.

Dustin nudged one of the sticks with his finger. “If I glue it here, the middle might bend. I think I need another support.”

Nigel leaned forward to examine the model. “We can add one underneath.”

“I want to try it myself first.”

“All right. Show me what you've got.”

Nigel moved back, giving his son room. He was beginning to understand how often he had mistaken helping for taking over. He had spent years trying to solve problems quickly, assuming that a solution was more useful than the uncomfortable process of figuring things out together. With Dustin, that approach sometimes made him impatient when the boy needed time to explain what he was thinking.

Today, Nigel was determined to listen.

Annabelle appeared in the doorway carrying a glass of water. She stopped when she saw the scattered craft materials and looked at the bridge with interest.

“That looks complicated,” she said.

Dustin glanced up. “It's supposed to hold my toy cars.”

“That's ambitious.”

He smiled faintly and returned to his work.

Annabelle set the water on the coffee table, then looked toward Nigel. He gave her a small nod. They had agreed that she would speak to Dustin when he felt comfortable, not when she decided the time was convenient. She seemed nervous, but she did not approach him immediately.

Instead, she sat on the sofa and watched while he tested a piece of cardboard against the bridge's frame.

Several minutes passed. Dustin finally found a support that fit, and Nigel helped him hold the structure steady while the glue dried. When the model was secure enough to stand on its own, Dustin carefully placed a toy car on the middle section.

The bridge held.

His face lit up.

“It worked!”

Nigel laughed and gave him a high five. “Engineer Dustin. I think we've got a future here.”

Dustin grinned, then began lining up more cars for the test. Annabelle watched him with a softened expression. Whatever she had expected from the afternoon, she could now see that he was not looking for another argument about the fall fair. He was simply enjoying a project with his father.

After the bridge survived the weight of three cars, Dustin leaned back on his hands.

“Can I have something to eat?”

“Of course,” Nigel said. “There's fruit in the kitchen.”

Dustin went to wash his hands. Nigel followed him a moment later, leaving Annabelle alone with the model bridge and the stuffed fox that had fallen onto the carpet. She picked up the fox and placed it beside Dustin's backpack.

When the boy returned with an apple, Annabelle spoke.

“Dustin, could I talk to you for a minute?”

He paused beside the coffee table.

“About what?”

“About the fair. And some things I've said.”

Dustin looked toward his father. Nigel remained near the kitchen doorway, close enough to be available but far enough away that the conversation could belong to them.

“You can decide whether you want to talk,” Nigel said. “Nobody is going to make you.”

Dustin considered that, then sat on the sofa opposite Annabelle.

“Okay.”

Annabelle clasped her hands together. She had rehearsed the apology several times in her head, but now that the boy was sitting in front of her, the prepared sentences felt insufficient.

“I owe you an apology,” she began. “I made comments about your mother's clothes and her appearance. I thought I was being funny, but I didn't stop to consider how those comments would affect you.”

Dustin listened without interrupting.

“I also criticized the decorations you and your classmates made. I wanted the booth to look a certain way, and I treated your work as though it wasn't good enough. That wasn't fair.”

She took a breath.

“You worked hard on that presentation. You showed everyone what you and your mother had done, and you thanked me for the things I contributed. You didn't call me names or tell people to dislike me. I was embarrassed, and instead of admitting why, I blamed you.”

Dustin's fingers moved over the skin of his apple.

“I'm sorry,” Annabelle said. “You didn't deserve to be put in that position. You shouldn't have had to worry about whether your mother was being treated kindly, and you shouldn't have had to wonder whether you were allowed to tell me when something bothered you.”

For several seconds, Dustin remained silent.

Nigel felt the old impulse to help, to say something that would make the room less uncomfortable. He resisted it. His son deserved time to decide what he wanted to say, and Annabelle deserved the chance to hear his answer without someone translating it for her.

Finally, Dustin looked up.

“Why did you keep doing it?”

Annabelle's face tightened slightly.

“I thought I was being funny. I also wanted people to like me.”

“But why did you make fun of Mom?”

The question was simple, but it went deeper than the apology she had prepared. Annabelle looked down at her hands, searching for an answer that would not become another excuse.

“I think I was comparing myself to her,” she admitted. “I wanted to feel important in your dad's life, and sometimes I acted as if I had to prove I was better at things. I was wrong to do that.”

Dustin frowned.

“Mom isn't trying to be better than you.”

“I know that now.”

“She doesn't care if your decorations are expensive. She just wanted us to use the things we made.”

Annabelle nodded slowly.

“You're right.”

“And when you said that stuff about her clothes, I thought you wanted me to laugh, too.”

Annabelle's eyes filled. She blinked quickly, but she did not turn away.

“I understand why you thought that. I'm sorry I made you feel you had to choose whether to laugh with me or stand up for your mother.”

Dustin looked at his apple again.

“I don't want you to stop coming over just because I'm mad at you.”

Annabelle's expression changed.

“I don't want that either.”

“But I don't want you to make fun of Mom anymore.”

“I won't.”

He studied her face, apparently trying to determine whether the promise was different from the ones he had heard before.

“Even when Dad isn't around?”

Annabelle glanced toward Nigel, then looked back at Dustin.

“Even when your dad isn't around.”

Dustin nodded. He did not hug her, and he did not announce that everything was forgiven. Instead, he took another bite of his apple and asked whether she knew where Nigel kept the spare cardboard.

The conversation moved on because Dustin had decided it could. Annabelle answered his question, helped him find another piece of material, and let him explain how he planned to reinforce the bridge. She did not ask whether he was still angry, and she did not request reassurance that he liked her.

Nigel watched from the doorway, feeling both relieved and ashamed. His son had been able to ask the question that mattered, receive an honest answer, and return to his project without being forced to manage an adult's emotions.

Later, when Dustin went upstairs to look for a book about bridges, Annabelle sat beside Nigel on the sofa.

“I didn't realize how much he had been thinking about it,” she said.

“He tried to tell us.”

“I know.”

She rubbed her palms together.

“I kept assuming that because I didn't intend to hurt him, he shouldn't have been hurt. I think I was more concerned about whether people liked me than whether I was treating them properly.”

Nigel looked toward the stairs.

“I did the same thing. I wanted the argument to end, so I asked Becca to make him apologize. I wasn't thinking about what that would teach him.”

Annabelle gave a small nod.

“Are you angry with me?”

“I'm disappointed in how we handled it. But I also know I let it happen.”

She looked at him, perhaps expecting him to soften the admission or tell her that she was not entirely responsible. He did not.

“I need to be able to trust that when you say something is a joke, you won't use that as a reason to ignore somebody's feelings,” he continued. “And Dustin needs to know I will stand up for him when something is wrong.”

Annabelle absorbed this quietly.

“I understand.”

Nigel hoped she did. More importantly, he hoped he could now demonstrate that he understood it himself.

When Dustin returned, he carried a book about simple engineering projects and announced that he wanted to build a second bridge, this time with a longer span. Annabelle offered to help cut the cardboard, but she waited until he agreed before joining him.

The three of them spent the rest of the afternoon working around the coffee table. The bridge was crooked, the glue took too long to dry, and one of the wooden supports snapped when Dustin tested it too enthusiastically. Nobody made fun of anyone for the mistake. They found another stick and tried again.

When Nigel drove Dustin home that evening, the boy carried the model bridge carefully on his lap. The stuffed fox was tucked beneath his arm, and the photograph from the fall fair remained inside his backpack.

Becca opened the door before they reached the steps.

“How was your afternoon?”

“We built a bridge,” Dustin announced. “It can hold three cars, but the second one broke.”

“Then it sounds as though you learned something.”

“Yeah. I need stronger supports.”

Nigel smiled.

“He's already planning the next version.”

Becca looked from her son to her former husband. She could tell that something had shifted during the visit, though neither man had yet explained what had happened.

After Dustin carried his things inside, Nigel stayed on the porch.

“Annabelle apologized to him,” he said. “She admitted what she did and answered his questions. I didn't interrupt.”

Becca studied his face.

“How did he take it?”

“He listened. He didn't say everything was fine, but he was able to move on.”

“That sounds healthy.”

Nigel nodded.

“I think so, too.”

For a moment, neither spoke. Then Nigel added, “I understand now that I can't ask him to forgive someone just because I'm uncomfortable with the conflict.”

Becca felt the words settle between them. She had wanted Nigel to recognize that principle since the first phone call, when Dustin had come home wondering whether his mother looked embarrassing.

“That's important,” she said.

“I should have understood it sooner.”

“Yes,” Becca replied. “You should have.”

She did not say it to punish him. She said it because honesty was finally becoming possible between them, and she did not want either of them to mistake progress for a reason to erase what had happened.

Nigel accepted the answer. He said goodbye and returned to his car.

Inside, Dustin was setting his bridge on the dining table. Becca helped him find a safe place for it, away from the edge where it might fall. He then pulled the stuffed fox from his backpack and placed it beside the model.

“Annabelle said she was sorry,” he told his mother.

Becca sat beside him.

“How do you feel about that?”

“Better, I guess. She listened when I asked why she did it.”

“That's good.”

“I'm still a little mad.”

“You're allowed to be.”

He nodded, satisfied that he did not have to choose between accepting an apology and acknowledging that the hurt had not vanished.

Becca kissed the top of his head.

“Let's see whether this bridge survives until morning.”

Dustin laughed and went to wash his hands before dinner.

For the first time since the fall fair, Becca felt that an apology had been offered for the right reason. It had not been demanded to make the adults comfortable, and it had not required Dustin to pretend he had never been hurt.

That distinction mattered more than a perfect ending.

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: A Quiet Family Dinner Tested Whether Annabelle Had Changed, When One Casual Remark Threatened to Reopen the Wound

The cardboard bridge was almost finished when Nigel noticed that Dustin had stopped working.
