She had asked twice whether I was available and had declined the offer of coffee.

I stared at the message on my screen.

For years, Mother had treated my office as a place she could visit whenever she needed help, usually without warning. She would sit across from my desk, explain a problem, and assume that I would find a solution before she left. Sometimes she brought documents. Sometimes she brought only her expectations.

This time, I asked my assistant to tell her I could spare twenty minutes.

When Patricia entered, she looked around the room with an expression I could not quite interpret. Perhaps she was seeing it differently now that she understood the scale of the work I did there. The shelves held financial reports, corporate filings, and photographs of companies that Bennett Capital had helped restructure. There were no expensive decorations, only a large table, several chairs, and a window overlooking the street.

She sat down and placed her folder on the table.

“Thank you for seeing me.”

I nodded toward the chair.

“Would you like some water?”

“No.”

I waited.

She folded her hands. “I want to apologize for what happened at the wedding.”

The words were so unexpected that I did not respond immediately.

Mother looked at me, then lowered her eyes.

“I should not have had your name removed from the guest list. It was unnecessary, and it was hurtful.”

I studied her face.

She seemed uncomfortable, but not entirely insincere. For a moment, I wondered whether the events of the previous day had finally forced her to confront the way she had treated me.

“Why did you do it?” I asked.

She shifted in her chair.

“I was worried about the atmosphere. Vanessa's family is very particular, and I thought there might be tension if you attended.”

“Because of what?”

“Because of our disagreements.”

“Which disagreements, Mom?”

She pressed her lips together.

“You have been critical of the way Ethan manages his responsibilities. You questioned the company's decisions, and you made it clear that you didn't approve of certain arrangements.”

“I questioned the company's financial problems because people were at risk of losing their jobs. I offered to help, and you refused to discuss it.”

“That was a long time ago.”

“The financial problems didn't disappear.”

She looked toward the window.

“I know.”

It was the closest she had come to acknowledging the truth.

I leaned back.

“Mother, I appreciate your apology for the wedding. But if you came here to discuss the company, we need to keep those matters separate.”

She opened her folder.

“I do need to discuss the company.”

I felt the small hope I had allowed myself begin to fade.

“Then let's hear it.”

She removed several documents and placed them in front of me. They included a summary of the company's current financial position, a list of disputed payments, and a proposed plan for restoring her authority once the investigation concluded.

I read the first page.

“You want the board to reinstate you as president.”

“I want the board to recognize that I have managed Caldwell Hospitality for years. The company needs experienced leadership, and the current situation is damaging its reputation.”

“The board has not concluded its investigation.”

“Then you should tell them to reconsider the restrictions.”

“On what basis?”

“Because I'm your mother.”

I looked at her.

She seemed to realize what she had said, but she did not withdraw it.

“Claire, surely there is room for a family solution.”

“There is room for a fair process. There isn't a separate set of rules for family members.”

Her expression hardened.

“So this is how it's going to be.”

“This is how it has to be.”

She gathered the papers into a neat stack.

“I never thought you would use your position against us.”

“I didn't use my position to remove you from the guest list. I used my shareholder rights to authorize an independent review after the company identified questionable transactions.”

“You know how much your father loved that company.”

“Yes.”

“And you know how hard I've worked to keep it alive.”

“I do.”

“Then why are you doing this?”

I looked at her for a long moment.

“Because keeping the company alive doesn't mean allowing anyone to do whatever they want with its money.”

Her face flushed.

“You think I stole from the business?”

“I think the records contain expenses that require explanation, and the proposed guarantee contains an authorization I did not sign. The investigators need to establish what happened.”

“I never forged your signature.”

“I didn't accuse you of doing so.”

“But you think I know something.”

“I think you were involved in the approval process. The records show that. If there is an explanation, you should provide it.”

Mother stood and walked toward the window. She stared down at the street, where a delivery driver was unloading boxes outside a shop.

“When your father died, I was left with a company I didn't know how to run,” she said. “Everyone expected me to keep it going. The employees, the suppliers, the banks. I couldn't show them that I was frightened.”

I remained quiet.

“Ethan wanted to prove himself. He wanted to be someone your father would have been proud of. I thought if I gave him responsibility, he would grow into it.”

She turned toward me.

“I was trying to protect him.”

“From what?”

“From feeling like a failure.”

I felt a familiar sadness settle over me.

“You protected him from the wrong things.”

She looked away.

I continued, “You could have taught him to ask questions, to admit when he didn't understand something, and to take responsibility for his decisions. Instead, you made every difficult problem someone else's responsibility.”

“That's not fair.”

“Isn't it?”

She did not answer.

For a moment, the room was quiet except for the faint sound of traffic beyond the window.

Then Mother returned to her chair.

“There's another reason I came.”

I already knew.

“The company needs stability,” she said. “If you speak to the board and explain that the family is working together, they may agree to lift the restrictions. We could deal with the expenses privately, and the company could reimburse any amounts that were charged incorrectly.”

I stared at her.

“Are you asking me to use company money to settle the company's own investigation?”

“I'm asking you to help us find a solution.”

“Those are not the same thing.”

She leaned forward.

“Claire, think about what will happen if this becomes public. The employees will worry. Suppliers may withdraw their contracts. Ethan's career could be finished before it has even begun.”

“Then the best way to protect them is to establish the truth and correct whatever went wrong.”

“You could prevent this from becoming a scandal.”

“Not by concealing evidence.”

Her eyes flashed.

“You sound exactly like your father when he was angry.”

The remark surprised me.

“Did you think Dad would have ignored this?”

She opened her mouth, then closed it again.

My father had made mistakes. He had trusted people too easily, and he had sometimes avoided difficult conversations because he wanted to believe that everyone around him shared his principles. But he had never believed that a family name should excuse dishonesty.

Mother knew that.

Perhaps she had hoped I would forget it.

“I won't interfere with the investigation,” I said. “If you have documents that explain the transactions, provide them. If you believe the board acted improperly, your counsel can challenge the decisions through the proper process. But I won't ask the board to reinstate you simply because you're my mother.”

She rose slowly.

“I suppose there's nothing left to say.”

“There may be a great deal left to say. But not if the only acceptable answer is the one you want.”

She picked up her folder.

At the door, she paused.

“Do you really think you can live with what happens if the company collapses?”

I stood.

“I'm doing everything I can to protect it.”

“Even if that means losing your family?”

I felt the question settle between us.

“You made me choose between belonging to the family and accepting the way you treated me long before the investigation began.”

Mother's face tightened.

She left without another word.

I remained standing until I heard the outer door close.

Then I sat down and called Rebecca.

“Mother visited,” I said. “She wants the board to restore her authority and settle the disputed expenses privately.”

“Did you agree?”

“No.”

“Did she provide any new evidence?”

“Nothing yet. She brought a proposed reinstatement plan, but it contained no supporting documentation that would change the investigation.”

Rebecca made a note.

“Then I'll inform the board that the request has been received. They can consider it alongside the existing evidence.”

“Thank you.”

I ended the call and returned to the documents on my desk.

I had hoped Mother's apology might have opened a door between us. Instead, it had revealed how much she still believed that an apology could be exchanged for a favor.

I did not know whether she was incapable of understanding the difference or simply unwilling to accept it.

That afternoon, Martin Ellis called with an update.

“The investigators have interviewed the executive assistant who handled the guarantee package,” he said. “She confirmed that the document was prepared in the executive office, but she says she received it already signed.”

“From whom?”

“She believes it came from Ethan's office, but she isn't certain. She has agreed to provide a formal statement and cooperate with the review.”

“Did she identify the person who created the file?”

“No. The electronic records may help, but we need additional analysis.”

I thanked him and ended the call.

The evidence was narrowing the possibilities, but it had not yet established who had created the disputed authorization. I wanted answers, but I would not force a conclusion simply because uncertainty was painful.

At four o'clock, Vanessa called.

“Claire, I spoke with Ethan,” she said. “He has agreed to provide the records he has.”

“That's a good step.”

“He says he didn't forge your signature.”

“I haven't accused him of doing so.”

“He also says he never intended to use the money for anything improper.”

“Then he needs to explain why the application was submitted without my approval.”

Vanessa sighed.

“I know. I'm trying to understand it myself.”

There was a pause before she continued.

“I also wanted to tell you that we are going to repay the wedding expenses that were charged to the company if the review confirms they were personal. My father and I have discussed it, and we don't want the company carrying costs that belong to us.”

I felt a small measure of relief.

“That is a responsible approach. The accountants will need to identify the amounts and determine the proper process for repayment.”

“Ethan isn't happy about it.”

“I imagine he isn't.”

“He says it will make him look guilty.”

“Repaying a legitimate debt isn't an admission of fraud. The records should reflect what actually happened.”

Vanessa was quiet.

“I wish I had understood all this before the wedding.”

“So do I.”

When we ended the call, I felt no sudden optimism. Vanessa's decision was sensible, but it did not resolve the disputed guarantee or establish who had authorized the questionable transactions.

Still, it mattered that someone had begun to distinguish responsibility from appearances.

That evening, Ethan sent another message.

Mom says you refused to help her. I don't understand how you can do this to both of us.

I read it, then typed a reply.

I offered to help you understand the process and cooperate with the investigation. I will not conceal evidence or ask the board to ignore its responsibilities. Those are different things.

He did not respond.

Later, as I prepared to leave the office, Rebecca called again.

“The board has received the preliminary report and agreed to maintain the restrictions. They have also requested an independent review of the proposed guarantee and the executive approval process.”

“Good.”

“There is one more development. The lender has identified a second version of the guarantee in its archived system. The signature is the same, but the document metadata differs.”

I stopped beside the elevator.

“Does the second version have a different date?”

“Yes. The date is later than the one on the copy we reviewed yesterday.”

“Could it be a corrected document?”

“Possibly. The examiner will need to compare the two versions and establish how they were created.”

I stared at the elevator doors.

A second version meant the first document might not have been the only record of the authorization. It also meant the person who prepared the application had handled more than one copy of the disputed guarantee.

“Please send me the details as soon as the examiner has reviewed them,” I said.

“I will.”

I ended the call and stood alone in the hallway.

For the first time, I wondered whether the investigation would reveal not one bad decision, but a chain of decisions in which every person involved had assumed someone else would take responsibility.

And somewhere in that chain was the answer to the question I had been asking since the beginning.

Who had decided that my name could be used without my permission?

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: The Second Version of the Guarantee Changed the Direction of the Investigation, and Ethan Finally Admitted What He Had Been Afraid to Tell Me

Patricia arrived at my office the following morning without an appointment.
