Six were from Rosie, four from my mother, three from my father, and the remaining four came from numbers I recognized as relatives who had attended dinner. The messages followed the same pattern. First came disbelief, then demands for explanations, and finally questions about whether there was any way to reverse what had happened to Victor.

Not one asked whether I had slept.

I arrived shortly before eight, hung my coat beside the conference room, and opened the blinds. The city was waking beneath a thin layer of gray cloud. Delivery trucks blocked part of the street, pedestrians hurried past the windows with paper cups in their hands, and a construction crew across the road was already drilling into the pavement. Ordinary things continued with almost insulting indifference to the upheaval of the previous evening.

My assistant, Claire, appeared with a tablet and a cup of black coffee. She had worked with me long enough to recognize when I wanted the day's priorities explained immediately and when I needed a moment to read them myself.

“The board meeting is at nine,” she said. “Outside counsel has submitted the updated report. Elaine wants confirmation that the document retention instructions have been delivered to everyone involved.”

“Have they?”

“Everyone except two people whose accounts were already suspended. Their attorneys have been contacted.”

I nodded and opened the report. The first pages contained the findings that had led to Victor's administrative leave, followed by a list of outstanding questions and the actions required to preserve the company's records. Several transactions had been traced to the vendor network we had identified earlier. Others required additional review. The investigators had not made a final determination about every payment, and the report was explicit about the difference between established facts and unresolved allegations.

That distinction mattered. Victor's signature on an authorization did not, by itself, prove that he had acted dishonestly. A questionable payment was not automatically a fraudulent payment. The company had an obligation to establish what had happened, who had known what, and whether anyone had benefited improperly.

I wanted the investigation to reach conclusions that could withstand the scrutiny of people who did not know my family.

At eight fifteen, my mother called again.

I answered because ignoring her indefinitely would not make the underlying problem disappear.

“Ethan,” she began, her voice strained. “Thank goodness. I've been trying to reach you all morning.”

“I saw your calls.”

“Then why haven't you called me back?”

“I've been working.”

She exhaled sharply. “Your sister hasn't slept. Victor is beside himself. Their entire future is at risk, and you seem determined to pretend this is just another business problem.”

“It is a business problem.”

“It involves your family.”

“It involves company money and decisions made by people who had responsibilities to the company.”

She was silent for a moment. I could hear a television playing faintly in the background, followed by the clink of a spoon against a cup.

“Can't you speak to the board?” she asked. “Explain that this has gone too far. Tell them you know Victor personally and that you don't believe he would do anything deliberately wrong.”

“Do you know what he did?”

“I know he's a good husband to Rosie.”

“That wasn't my question.”

“He has worked hard for everything they have.”

“So have a lot of people. That doesn't answer it.”

Her breathing grew uneven. “You are making this sound as though you want him to be guilty.”

“I want the facts established.”

“But you own the company. Surely you can stop this investigation.”

I looked at the report on my desk. “If I interfere because Victor is married to my sister, I compromise the investigation and the company. I'm not going to do that.”

“You could at least protect Rosie.”

“From what?”

“From losing everything.”

I leaned back in my chair. “Mother, do you know whether Rosie was involved in the transactions?”

“No.”

“Do you know whether Victor used company money improperly?”

“I don't know.”

“Then you're asking me to protect people without knowing what happened.”

“I'm asking you to remember that she's your sister.”

I had heard those words in different forms throughout my life. Remember that she's your sister when Rosie borrowed money and never returned it. Remember that she's your sister when she mocked my work in front of relatives. Remember that she's your sister when I needed help and the family had already decided she deserved it more.

The phrase had always meant the same thing: my obligations were endless, while hers were optional.

“I remember,” I said. “That's why I'm not going to make a decision that could hurt innocent people just to protect her from an uncomfortable situation.”

My mother ended the call without saying goodbye.

I placed the phone facedown and returned to the report. I felt no satisfaction at having won an argument with her. The conversation had simply confirmed what I already knew: she was frightened by the consequences, but she still believed my responsibility was to remove them.

At nine, the board convened in the main conference room. The directors joined in person and remotely, and Mercer presented the current findings without speculation. He explained why Victor's access had been suspended, what the evidence established, and which questions remained open. Elaine outlined the next steps, including interviews, independent review of the vendor relationships, and a more detailed examination of the authorization trail.

One director asked whether the investigation could be completed within a week.

“Not responsibly,” Mercer replied. “We can establish some facts quickly, but the vendor network and supporting documentation require additional work.”

Another director asked whether the company should notify regulators immediately.

Mercer explained the relevant considerations and recommended that counsel determine the appropriate reporting obligations as the facts became clearer. The board agreed that no one should make public claims that exceeded the available evidence.

When the discussion turned to Victor's position, I made my own position clear.

“I don't want anyone treating him more harshly because he's connected to me,” I said. “I also don't want anyone treating him more favorably for the same reason. Apply the company's procedures. If the evidence clears him, say so. If it establishes misconduct, act accordingly.”

The directors agreed.

For the first time since the investigation began, I felt that the situation was moving on a path I could trust. I could not control every outcome, but I could insist that the people responsible for reaching those outcomes had the information and independence they needed.

The meeting ended shortly before eleven. As the directors began leaving, Claire appeared in the doorway and told me Rosie was downstairs.

“She says she needs ten minutes,” Claire added.

“Did she make an appointment?”

“No. She arrived about twenty minutes ago and said it was a family emergency.”

I looked through the glass toward the elevators. “Tell her I'll see her.”

Rosie entered my office wearing the same coat she had worn when she left her house that morning. Her hair was pulled back carelessly, and there were faint shadows beneath her eyes. Without the dress, jewelry, and carefully arranged confidence of the previous evening, she looked less like the woman who had entertained thirty guests and more like someone who had spent hours trying to understand a problem she could no longer talk her way around.

She remained standing.

“You could have warned me,” she said.

“About the investigation?”

“About all of it. About owning Halden. About Victor being in trouble. About the board meeting. Anything.”

“The company has been reviewing transactions for months. The investigators had to do their work.”

“You knew it could end like this.”

“I knew there were serious questions.”

“And you let me stand there last night and praise him.”

I studied her. “You chose what to say about your husband.”

Her expression hardened. “You know perfectly well what I mean.”

“I do. You wanted everyone to admire your life. You didn't want anyone asking whether it was as secure as you claimed.”

She looked away, then crossed the room and sat in the chair opposite my desk.

“I was trying to make a good impression,” she said. “The guests were important to Victor. I wanted them to see that we were doing well.”

“So you made me the joke.”

“I didn't think you would care.”

The answer was so familiar that it almost made me laugh. Rosie had never needed to believe that I deserved an insult. She only needed to believe that I would absorb it without making her pay a social price.

“You didn't think I would care,” I repeated.

She pressed her hands together. “I know that sounds terrible.”

“It sounds honest.”

For several seconds, she stared at her fingers. Then she looked up.

“Is Victor going to lose his job?”

“He's on administrative leave while the investigation continues. I won't predict the outcome before the evidence has been reviewed.”

“But you could bring him back.”

“If the process supports that decision, the board will consider it.”

“You are the controlling owner. They listen to you.”

“They listen to the evidence. That's what they're supposed to do.”

Her eyes filled, though she did not let the tears fall. “We have a mortgage, Ethan. We have expenses. The house is expensive to maintain. Everything is built around his salary.”

“Then you need to review your finances and make decisions based on what you can afford.”

She stared at me as if I had suggested something incomprehensible.

“That's all you have to say?”

“What do you want me to say?”

“I want you to help me.”

The words hung between us. It was the first time that morning she had asked directly rather than presenting her request as a moral obligation.

I considered what help could reasonably mean. I could arrange for her to speak with an independent financial adviser. I could explain which questions needed answers. I could ensure that she received accurate information about the company's process, provided it was information she was entitled to receive. None of those things required me to conceal evidence or promise an outcome.

But I could not give her the guarantee she wanted.

“I can help you understand your own financial situation,” I said. “I can make sure you know how to obtain independent advice. I cannot make the investigation disappear.”

She shook her head.

“You always do this.”

“Do what?”

“Make everything complicated. You turn a simple request into a lecture about rules.”

“Because the rules matter when people are deciding what to do with other people's money.”

She rose abruptly.

“I should never have come here.”

I didn't try to stop her.

At the door, she turned back. “You think you're better than us now.”

“No, Rosie. I think I'm responsible for what I do. That's different.”

She left without answering.

I watched the door close, then returned to my desk. Her visit had not resolved anything, but it had revealed something important. Rosie had finally encountered a situation in which charm, family pressure, and public confidence could not guarantee the outcome she wanted.

And she was still looking for someone else to take responsibility for it.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: The Records Led Somewhere My Sister Had Never Expected, and Her First Attempt to Explain Them Only Raised More Questions

My phone had registered seventeen missed calls by the time I reached my office the following morning.
