Halden's investigators followed the payment trail through vendor agreements, approval records, and internal correspondence. Every time they established one connection, another question emerged.

Victor remained on administrative leave. His company accounts were inaccessible, his corporate cards had been deactivated, and his responsibilities had been reassigned temporarily to two other executives. The company continued operating, but the transition exposed how much authority Victor had concentrated around himself. Several managers had been accustomed to forwarding decisions to his office rather than following the ordinary approval process.

That was a governance problem whether or not the investigation ultimately established misconduct.

On Thursday morning, Elaine asked me to attend a meeting about a particular vendor, Northbridge Advisory. The company had received several payments from Halden over the previous year, supposedly for operational consulting. The invoices described work involving supplier efficiency, procurement reviews, and restructuring recommendations.

The problem was that the supporting material was remarkably thin.

One invoice referred to a comprehensive assessment, but the files contained only a short presentation with generic recommendations. Another listed weeks of specialist work without identifying the people who had performed it. A third included expenses that could not be reconciled with the dates or locations recorded elsewhere.

“Who approved these?” I asked.

Elaine turned the report toward me. “Victor approved the largest payments. A finance manager approved two smaller invoices under delegated authority. We're interviewing that manager tomorrow.”

“And Northbridge?”

“We've requested the underlying contracts and work records. Their attorney has acknowledged the request but hasn't supplied the complete material yet.”

I studied the vendor information. The company had been registered through a corporate services provider, and its listed business address belonged to a shared office building. There was nothing inherently suspicious about either fact. Many legitimate businesses used registered agents and flexible office space. What mattered was whether the company had performed the work for which it had been paid.

“Who owns it?” I asked.

“The public filing identifies a director, but the beneficial ownership records are incomplete. Counsel is working through the relevant requests.”

Elaine moved to the next page.

The name there belonged to Daniel Pierce, Rosie's former college roommate.

I knew the name because Rosie had mentioned Daniel at family gatherings. He had attended her wedding, sent flowers when her first promotion was announced, and appeared in photographs from the Aspen trip she had described at dinner. According to the records, Daniel had served as a director of Northbridge Advisory during the period when Halden made the payments.

“That doesn't establish that Rosie knew about the contracts,” Elaine said. “We need to keep the distinction clear.”

“I agree.”

“Has she ever discussed Northbridge with you?”

“No. She has never discussed the company's vendors with me.”

“Has Victor?”

“Not outside formal business matters.”

Elaine made a note. “Then we'll proceed through the records.”

I appreciated her caution. It would have been easy to interpret every connection as evidence of a coordinated scheme, especially after what had happened at dinner. But connections were reasons to ask questions, not substitutes for answers.

That afternoon, Mercer informed me that Victor's attorney had requested a meeting. The attorney wanted clarification about the scope of the investigation and an opportunity for Victor to respond to the preliminary findings. We agreed to meet the following morning with Elaine present.

Victor arrived at nine thirty carrying a leather document case. His attorney, a composed man named Robert Lane, sat beside him. Victor looked tired, but he had regained enough composure to arrange his papers in a precise stack before the meeting began.

Lane opened by stating that his client denied knowingly approving improper payments. He acknowledged that some documentation appeared incomplete, but argued that Victor had relied on the procurement and finance teams to verify the underlying work.

Elaine asked whether Victor had reviewed the invoices before authorizing them.

“Not every supporting document,” he replied. “That wasn't my role. I approved the business expenditure based on the information presented to me.”

“Did you know Daniel Pierce was associated with Northbridge Advisory?”

Victor paused.

“I knew Daniel socially through my wife.”

“Did you disclose that relationship when the vendor was selected?”

“I don't remember being asked to.”

“That wasn't the question,” Elaine said. “Did you disclose it?”

“No.”

“Did you consider whether the relationship created a conflict of interest?”

Victor adjusted his cuffs. “I wasn't aware that Daniel had an ownership interest in the company.”

Mercer asked whether he had any emails, messages, or meeting notes that supported that statement.

“My records should contain what is relevant.”

“Then we need you to identify those records through your attorney.”

Victor's expression tightened. He had expected the meeting to focus on procedural questions and perhaps on a disagreement over the quality of the consulting work. Instead, the investigators were asking him to account for his decisions.

Lane requested a break.

During the pause, Victor approached me near the window.

“You know I didn't personally prepare these invoices,” he said.

“I know the invoices were prepared by other people.”

“And I relied on them.”

“Then provide the evidence that supports your reliance.”

He looked toward the conference table. “You could tell them this was a normal executive arrangement.”

“I wasn't involved in selecting Northbridge or approving its invoices.”

“But you understand how companies operate.”

“Yes. That's why I understand the need to investigate.”

His shoulders dropped slightly.

“Rosie says you won't even speak to her.”

“She came to my office.”

“She says you refused to help.”

“I offered to help her obtain independent financial advice. I didn't offer to interfere with the investigation.”

He looked at me with a mixture of resentment and desperation.

“You're putting the company ahead of your own sister.”

“No. I'm refusing to confuse protecting my sister with protecting every decision she or her husband may have made.”

He turned away.

The meeting resumed, and Victor's attorney provided several additional documents. Some supported the claim that finance staff had processed the invoices, but none resolved the questions surrounding the vendor relationship. The investigation remained open.

Later that afternoon, Rosie called me again.

This time, I answered before the call went to voicemail.

“Have you spoken to Victor?” she asked.

“Yes. His attorney requested a meeting with the company.”

“And?”

“The investigation is continuing.”

She sighed. “You always give the same answer.”

“Because the answer hasn't changed.”

“I found something.”

Her tone made me sit forward.

“What did you find?”

“A folder in Victor's study. It has Northbridge written on it. There are emails and printed documents. I don't understand all of them, but there are pages with Daniel's name.”

“Have you altered anything?”

“No.”

“Have you deleted anything?”

“Of course not.”

“Then leave the material as it is. Don't move it around, and don't send confidential company documents to me. Contact your own lawyer and explain what you've found.”

“Why can't I just give it to you?”

“Because you're connected to someone being investigated. The material needs to be handled properly.”

She went quiet.

“Ethan, I think Victor knew more than he told me.”

I did not answer immediately. It was possible she had discovered something important. It was also possible that she was interpreting documents she did not understand. Either way, the next step was not to draw a conclusion over the telephone.

“What makes you think that?” I asked.

“Some of the emails are from before the first payment. Daniel asked Victor to approve the contract. Victor replied that he would take care of it.”

“That wording alone doesn't establish what either man intended.”

“I know. But there are other messages.”

“Then give them to your lawyer and let the investigators request them through the proper process.”

She exhaled shakily.

“I don't know what to do.”

“For now, don't destroy anything, don't discuss the contents with anyone who might be involved, and obtain independent legal advice.”

“Do you think Victor is guilty?”

“I think the evidence needs to establish what happened.”

“That's not what I asked.”

“It's the only responsible answer I can give you.”

She ended the call.

For several minutes, I remained at my desk, thinking about the name Daniel Pierce and the emails Rosie had described. If the messages existed, their dates could be significant. They might establish that Victor knew about the relationship before the payments were approved. They might also contain an innocent explanation that had not yet reached the investigators.

I contacted Mercer and informed him that a potentially relevant set of records might exist outside the company's systems. I gave him only the information Rosie had provided, without presenting it as established fact. He confirmed that counsel would handle any request for the material.

That evening, I went home later than usual and found a message from Rosie waiting on my phone.

It contained no explanation, only a photograph of a printed email.

The sender was Daniel Pierce. The recipient was Victor Hale. The date was several weeks before Northbridge received its first payment from Halden.

The message was short. Daniel thanked Victor for agreeing to move forward with the arrangement and referred to a conversation about keeping the paperwork straightforward.

Below it, Victor had replied with a single sentence confirming that he would handle the approval.

I enlarged the image, read it again, and checked the date.

It was not proof of a crime. It was not even enough to establish that the contract was improper. But it directly challenged Victor's claim that he had not known about Daniel's involvement when the vendor was selected.

I called Rosie.

“Where did you get this photograph?”

“From the folder I told you about.”

“Have you sent it to anyone else?”

“No.”

“Please don't send any more documents to me. Tell your lawyer what you've found and preserve the original records.”

She sounded close to tears.

“Ethan, if I give them everything, what happens to my marriage?”

I looked at the photograph again.

“I can't answer that for you.”

“Can't you do anything to protect us?”

I closed the image.

“I can tell you not to make the situation worse by hiding evidence. What happens to your marriage depends on decisions that have already been made and what you choose to do now.”

For a long time, she said nothing.

Then, quietly, she asked, “What if I knew something without understanding what it meant?”

“Tell your lawyer the truth. Don't guess, and don't leave out details because you're afraid of how they sound.”

She promised she would think about it.

When the call ended, I forwarded a brief notice to Mercer explaining that Rosie had contacted me about a potentially relevant email and that she had been advised to preserve the original records and obtain independent counsel. I did not forward the photograph itself. The investigators would need to obtain the evidence properly and establish its authenticity.

I sat in the quiet of my apartment, listening to the refrigerator hum in the kitchen.

The question was no longer simply whether Victor had approved questionable payments. It was whether he had known about the relationship behind them before the first contract was signed, and whether Rosie had been more than an uninformed beneficiary of her husband's decisions.

I hoped the answers would be simpler than they appeared.

But hope was not evidence, and the documents were beginning to tell a story that neither my sister nor her husband could dismiss with a smile.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: The Email My Sister Found Changed the Investigation, but the Question She Finally Asked Me Was About Something Far More Personal

The next three days were consumed by interviews, document reviews, and meetings that began early and ended long after the office lights should have been switched off.
