I recognized her immediately from the office visit months earlier. Her auburn hair was tied back, and the dark jacket she wore looked slightly too large at the shoulders. She held a thin folder against her chest as though she had spent the entire journey rehearsing what she intended to say.

“Mrs. Whitcomb,” she began, then stopped. “I'm sorry. I don't know what you prefer to be called.”

“Eleanor Dawson,” I said after a moment. “That's my name.”

The answer surprised me. I had used Whitcomb for so long that saying my own name felt like reclaiming something I hadn't realized I had surrendered. Rebecca nodded and addressed me as Eleanor for the rest of the conversation.

She explained that she had worked as a financial records specialist for the Whitcomb company's commercial property division. Her responsibilities had included reviewing transaction records, reconciling accounts, and checking supporting documents before financial statements were submitted for approval.

Initially, she believed the irregularities she encountered were ordinary administrative mistakes. Some payments had been entered under unfamiliar company names, while others appeared to have been transferred between affiliated businesses without a clear explanation. When she asked for clarification, she was told that the transactions involved confidential arrangements approved by senior management.

She accepted that explanation at first.

Then she began finding discrepancies that could not easily be explained by clerical errors.

Several consulting companies listed in the records had little apparent operating history. Payments were repeatedly made to them under descriptions that changed from one transaction to another. Some supporting documents carried signatures that appeared inconsistent with the signatures on other records.

Rebecca had raised the concerns through internal channels. Rather than receiving a clear explanation, she was told that she had misunderstood the company's procedures and should focus on her assigned responsibilities.

The response unsettled her, but the decisive moment came when she found a financial guarantee carrying my name.

She had seen my signature before on documents related to an earlier property transaction. The signature on the new agreement looked similar, but the letters were unusually uniform, and the spacing differed from the original. When she checked the supporting paperwork, she found that the page containing the signature had been inserted into a version of the agreement that differed from the earlier draft.

She couldn't establish who had made the change, but she saved a copy because she believed the discrepancy needed to be investigated.

Jonathan asked her to explain exactly what she had preserved and when. Rebecca described the records carefully, distinguishing what she had personally observed from what she had learned later through other sources.

I listened without interrupting.

The document Jonathan had shown me in the hospital was not simply an isolated financial agreement. It appeared to belong to a group of transactions involving the same business entities and similar documentation problems.

“Why didn't you contact me directly?” I asked.

Rebecca lowered her eyes.

“I tried to find a way to reach you. But whenever I asked about the documents, Preston said you weren't involved in the company's affairs and that all questions should go through him.”

I remembered the email she had sent months earlier. I remembered Preston telling me that the issue had been resolved. The memory was no longer vague, and the realization that he had prevented a direct conversation left me feeling cold.

Rebecca continued. She had resigned several weeks before my fall, after deciding she could no longer remain responsible for records she believed required independent scrutiny. She had preserved copies of relevant documents within the limits of what she was legally entitled to retain and had cooperated with the investigators examining the transactions.

“I should have done more,” she said. “I kept thinking that someone more senior would eventually explain what was happening.”

Dad answered calmly.

“You can tell us what you know now. The important thing is to be accurate.”

Rebecca opened her folder and placed a copy of an earlier draft of the disputed agreement on the table. The page contained a handwritten note in the margin.

Please explain why this guarantee is necessary and what personal liability it creates.

I recognized the words immediately.

I had written them.

The memory came back in a sudden, uncomfortable rush. It was a rainy afternoon the previous October, and Preston had brought a stack of paperwork home. He had explained that the company needed to update its insurance and property records. I had started reviewing the pages while waiting for Lily to finish her homework.

When I reached the financial guarantee, I noticed language suggesting that I might be personally responsible for an obligation far beyond our household expenses. I wrote the question in the margin and asked Preston to explain it.

He had glanced at the page, frowned, and told me I was reading the wording incorrectly.

I insisted that I wanted a proper explanation before signing.

He took the papers away, saying he would ask the company's accountant to clarify the language.

I remembered feeling relieved when he returned the following evening with another set of pages and assured me that the matter had been resolved. I had not compared every page with the earlier draft. I had trusted him to bring me the correct version.

Now I understood why the handwritten question mattered.

“Is this the original draft?” I asked.

Rebecca explained that she had retained a copy during her review, but the original would need to be located and authenticated through the investigation. She couldn't say who had replaced the signature page or whether Preston had personally participated in doing so.

Jonathan emphasized the same distinction. The documents raised serious questions, but the evidence needed to establish responsibility would have to come from the complete record, not from assumptions about who had access to it.

I appreciated his caution, although I found it increasingly difficult to remain calm. I had spent years believing Preston's explanations because he was my husband and because I wanted to believe that the person I loved would never knowingly expose me to a risk I didn't understand.

Now every remembered reassurance seemed to contain another question.

Rebecca then asked whether I remembered visiting the Whitcomb office shortly after raising my concerns. I did. She recalled that I had come to collect a copy of a statement, and that she had shown me a portion of the blue ledger because it contained entries related to the transactions I was questioning.

I remembered the ledger's thick cover and brass-colored fastening. I remembered a series of dates written in narrow columns, with company names and amounts recorded beside them. Some entries were marked with small symbols, while others referred to supporting documents by number.

I hadn't understood the full significance of the entries. I had only wanted to know why my name appeared in a financial agreement I didn't remember signing.

Rebecca said I had asked whether I could make copies of the relevant pages. She had helped me identify the documents connected with the disputed guarantee, and I had placed the copies in a blue folder.

Then I had written a note for myself.

I remembered the moment more clearly as she described it. I had been sitting in my car in the office parking lot, with rain streaking the windshield. I was frightened that I had misunderstood something important, but I was equally frightened that Preston would persuade me to ignore it again.

I had written down a reminder that I should trust my right to ask questions and preserve the documents until I received an independent explanation.

The envelope discovered beneath the staircase might have been connected with that afternoon, although we still needed to establish when and why it had been placed there.

“Where did you put the folder?” Jonathan asked.

I closed my eyes, trying to recall the sequence of events.

I remembered bringing it home. I remembered placing it somewhere I believed Preston wouldn't look. I remembered Lily's old schoolbag, which had been stored in the wicker basket beneath the stairs after she outgrew it.

But I couldn't be certain whether I had hidden the folder there that day or moved it later.

Jonathan explained that investigators had already preserved the basket and were examining its contents. No one would need to rely on my memory alone if the documents could be located and their history established.

As Rebecca prepared to leave, she mentioned one additional detail. The blue ledger had not merely contained the entries she had reviewed. It appeared to be a record used to reconcile payments across several affiliated companies. Certain entries referred to supporting documents that were not present in the ordinary accounting files.

She believed the ledger could help investigators understand the relationship between the transactions and the financial guarantees, but she couldn't say what the missing documents contained.

Jonathan asked her to provide the names of the companies and the approximate dates of the entries she remembered. He arranged for the information to be passed to the appropriate investigators.

After Rebecca left, Dad remained beside my bed.

I was struggling with the realization that my own handwriting, my own questions, and my own efforts to preserve evidence had become part of a case I barely understood.

“Do you think Preston knew I had those copies?” I asked.

Dad didn't rush to reassure me.

“We don't know yet. He may have known you were asking questions without knowing what you had preserved. We need evidence before deciding which explanation is correct.”

I nodded, though the uncertainty was difficult to bear.

That afternoon, Jonathan received an update from the investigator examining our home. The recovered appointment journals had been cataloged, and the blue folder was being searched for among the items preserved under the legal authorization. Several records appeared to correspond with the documents Rebecca had described.

Then another discovery changed the direction of the investigation.

Inside the folder was a small brass key sealed in an envelope. The key had no identifying label, and no one initially knew what it opened. Investigators began tracing storage records connected with the Whitcomb companies, looking for a property or container associated with the key.

The inquiry eventually identified a commercial storage facility rented through a business affiliated with the Whitcomb organization. Because the connection was not yet fully established, the investigators sought the necessary authorization before inspecting the relevant unit.

When Jonathan told me, I felt the same mixture of hope and dread that had followed every new discovery.

“What do you think is inside?” I asked.

“I don't know,” he answered. “And we shouldn't pretend otherwise.”

Dad rested his hand on the edge of my bed.

“Whatever it is, we'll let the evidence speak for itself.”

The next update arrived later that evening. Investigators had secured access to the storage unit and located a locked container consistent with the key. The container had not yet been fully examined, and the contents would need to be documented and assessed before any conclusions could be drawn.

But there was enough to establish that the key had not been an unrelated household object.

It was connected to something someone had deliberately stored away.

I thought of Eleanor's blue room, Preston's insistence that I sign papers without asking too many questions, Rebecca's careful records, and the envelope bearing my own handwriting.

The Whitcombs had treated my questions as a nuisance. They had tried to portray me as incapable of managing my own affairs. They had even sought to use my injuries as a reason to limit my relationship with Lily.

Yet the evidence was beginning to suggest that my questions had led me toward records someone else had wanted to keep hidden.

I still didn't know whether the fall had been deliberate, who had prepared the disputed agreement, or what the recovered ledger would reveal. Those questions remained unanswered, and I refused to replace them with assumptions simply because I was frightened.

But I no longer doubted that the investigation was worth pursuing.

Before Jonathan left, he told me the custody hearing would proceed the next day. The Whitcombs would have to defend their allegations, and our response would include the medical records, my employment history, and the evidence of my continued involvement in Lily's care.

I looked toward the hospital window, where the evening light had faded to gray.

For the first time since the fall, I felt prepared to face the next day—not because I knew what the judge would decide, but because I finally had people beside me who were willing to examine the facts rather than accept the Whitcombs' version of events.

Click here to continue reading: PART 5: The Whitcombs Arrived at the Custody Hearing Expecting an Easy Victory, Until the Judge Asked Who Had Prepared Their Evidence

Rebecca Sloan arrived the next morning accompanied by an investigator and Jonathan.
