Sophie stepped forward awkwardly.

“Hi.”

I took a breath.

“Adrian, this is my sister, Sophie.”

“The bride,” he said warmly.

“And apparently your sister-in-law,” she replied.

Adrian smiled. “Apparently.”

A few guests drifted into the lobby and recognized him immediately. Within seconds, people were greeting him.

Then my father’s voice cut through the room.

“Well, well.”

Graham stood in the ballroom doorway, smiling again.

This smile was calculated.

“Adrian Reyes,” he said. “What brings you here?”

Adrian looked at me, letting me decide.

“He’s here for me,” I said.

Graham laughed lightly. “Clara, don’t tell me you called counsel because you fell into a fountain.”

Several guests suddenly became fascinated by their drinks.

I shook my head.

“No.”

I took Adrian’s hand.

“I called my husband.”

The lobby became astonishingly quiet.

Graham looked at our joined hands, then at my ring.

“Your what?”

“My husband.”

He laughed once.

No one joined him.

“This is some kind of joke.”

“No.”

“How long?”

“Three years.”

His face changed.

Not anger.

Hurt.

“You married without telling us?”

The old reflex rose in me.

Apologize.

Explain.

Make him comfortable.

I did none of it.

“Yes.”
