Graham looked around and straightened, ready to perform for the room.

I spoke before he could.

“Dad, I’m leaving.”

“We’re talking about this.”

“Not tonight.”

“This affects the family.”

I looked at Adrian, then back at him.

“My marriage isn’t a family asset.”

His jaw tightened.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Not us.

Me.

I thought of the fountain, the laughter, thirty-two years of jokes. But I also remembered pancakes shaped like animals, bicycle lessons, and the time he drove through snow to bring me home from college when I was sick.

Families are tragic that way.

Love does not erase harm.

Harm does not erase every memory of love.

“Because I didn’t know how to let you into my life without letting you define it,” I said.

He stared at me.

“I didn’t trust you to meet Adrian without evaluating him. And I didn’t trust you to see me happy without making it a joke.”

His certainty faded.

“You think that little of me?”

“I think you taught me to expect it.”

He flinched.

For once, I did not take the words back.

Sophie hugged me before I left.

“I want to talk,” she whispered.

“So do I.”

“When?”

“Tomorrow.”

“Promise?”

“Yes.”

Adrian opened the car door outside.

“You don’t have to be fine,” he said.

“I know.”

“And you don’t owe me an apology for calling.”

I almost laughed.

“I was going to apologize.”

“I know.”
