His hair was untidy, and his face looked gray with worry. Brittany had called him before the officers finished questioning her, apparently telling him that I had been detained and that something terrible had happened to my luggage.

He hurried through the security entrance after receiving permission to meet with the investigators.

“Mom!”

He came toward me with both hands raised, as though he expected to find me injured.

“Are you all right? Brittany said they found something in your suitcase. She said you might be in serious trouble.”

“I'm all right, Ethan.”

“What did they find?”

“Prescription medication bottles that I did not pack.”

His eyes widened.

“What?”

“Someone placed them in my luggage last night.”

He stared at me, waiting for the rest of the explanation. I could see him trying to reconcile my calm expression with the alarming version of events he had apparently heard from his wife.

“The police have a recording,” I continued. “It shows who entered my room and placed the pouch in my suitcase.”

Ethan swallowed.

“Who?”

I did not answer immediately. I wanted him to ask the question because he was ready to hear the answer, not because he expected me to accuse someone he loved.

“Brittany,” I said at last.

He stepped back as though I had struck him.

“No. That doesn't make sense.”

“I watched her do it.”

“Mom, there must be some explanation.”

“Then she will have an opportunity to provide one.”

He rubbed both hands over his face. For several seconds, he looked more like the frightened boy who had once come to me after breaking a neighbor's window than the grown man standing in an airport interview room.

“Where is she?”

“Being questioned.”

He looked toward the corridor.

“I'm going to talk to her.”

“Ethan, don't interfere with the investigation. If she has an explanation, she can give it to the officers.”

He stopped at the door.

“You really believe she would do something like this?”

I thought about the pouch, the photograph, the call at 12:17, and the months of pressure over my house.

“I believe what I saw,” I said. “You should allow yourself to see it, too.”

He left without another word.

I remained with the investigators for nearly an hour. They asked me to walk through the previous week's events, including the documents Brittany had brought to my house. When I mentioned the power of attorney, one of the investigators exchanged a glance with his colleague.

“Do you still have those documents?”

“Yes. I kept the entire set.”

“Would you be willing to provide copies?”

“Certainly. My attorney has also reviewed them.”

The investigator wrote down the attorney's contact information and asked whether Brittany had made any statements about my mental health.

I hesitated before answering.

“She has repeatedly suggested that I am becoming too old to manage my property. She has told Ethan that I need help with financial decisions. She has also implied that I become confused when people disagree with me.”

“Has a medical professional ever raised concerns about your ability to manage your affairs?”

“No.”

“Have you experienced any episodes of confusion or memory loss that you believe are relevant?”

“No. I am sixty-three, not incapacitated.”

He nodded, making no judgment about my age or my answer.

I explained that I had worked for twenty-eight years investigating financial fraud, had retired with a clear understanding of my finances, and continued to manage my property independently. I had no intention of using my professional background to influence the case. I simply wanted the investigators to understand why I had recognized the importance of preserving the footage and leaving the pouch untouched.

By the time the interview ended, I had missed my flight.

An airline representative helped me arrange a later departure, but I decided to postpone the trip until I understood what was happening. Helen was disappointed when I called, though she was more concerned about my safety than about the delay.

“Margaret, come here when you can,” she said. “But don't rush yourself into another airport until you're ready.”

“I won't.”

“And don't let anyone convince you that you're helpless just because you're getting older.”

I smiled faintly.

“I have no intention of doing that.”

After ending the call, I contacted my attorney, Richard Lawson. He had represented me on property matters for years and had reviewed the disputed documents the week before. I told him what had happened at the airport and asked him to come to the house as soon as possible.

His voice became serious when I described the pouch.

“Preserve everything, Margaret. The recording, the messages, the original documents. Don't speculate publicly about her motives. We'll deal with the evidence as it develops.”

“That's what I intend to do.”

“Good. And don't sign anything else. Not a single page.”

I assured him that I would not.

The officers allowed me to leave after taking my statement and arranging a follow-up interview. They retained the pouch and medication bottles as evidence. Before I departed, I signed a receipt confirming what had been collected and asked for a copy of the report documenting the transfer.

Outside the terminal, the morning had grown bright. Travelers streamed through the doors, dragging suitcases behind them, and taxis moved in a steady line along the curb. It was strange to stand among people beginning ordinary journeys when my own morning had become the beginning of a criminal investigation.

Ethan was waiting beside his car.

He had not gone to work.

“Can I take you home?” he asked.

“Yes.”

He opened the passenger door for me, but neither of us spoke until we had left the airport road. He seemed to be searching for a question that would not force him to choose between his mother and his wife.

Finally, he said, “Brittany told me you've been acting differently lately.”

I watched the highway signs pass.

“What does that mean?”

“She said you were forgetting conversations. That you repeated questions. That you sometimes became suspicious of people without a reason.”

“Did you notice any of those things yourself?”

He gripped the steering wheel.

“Not exactly.”

“Then why did you believe her?”

“I didn't know what to think.”

“Ethan, you knew me long before you knew Brittany. You know how I manage my affairs. You know I keep records, pay my bills, and take care of the house. If you were genuinely concerned about my memory, why didn't you sit down with me and talk about it?”

He had no answer.

The car passed the exit toward the lake, and I looked at the familiar road leading to our house. I remembered Robert driving that same route on Sunday afternoons, one hand on the wheel and the other resting near the gearshift. Ethan used to sit in the back seat, asking endless questions about the world outside the window.

I wondered when my son had stopped asking questions and started accepting explanations.

When we arrived, he carried my handbag inside and set it on the kitchen counter. The house looked exactly as it had when we left: the coffee cup beside the sink, the newspaper folded near Robert's old chair, the vase of flowers I had bought the day before. Nothing had changed physically, yet I felt as though I had returned to a place where every familiar object carried a new question.

Ethan sat at the kitchen table.

“Mom, if Brittany really did this, I need to know why.”

“So do I.”

He looked toward the staircase.

“Maybe the medication belonged to someone she knows. Maybe she was trying to help somebody.”

“Then why hide it in my suitcase? Why call someone and arrange for airport security to be alerted? Why do it after midnight without my knowledge?”

His shoulders slumped.

“I don't know.”

“Neither do I. That's why the police are investigating.”

I went upstairs and retrieved the folder containing the documents Brittany had brought. It was exactly where I had left it, in the locked drawer of my desk. I carried it downstairs and placed it in front of Ethan.

“Have you ever read these?”

He shook his head.

“Brittany said they were routine papers.”

“They are not all routine.”

I opened the folder to the power of attorney and pointed to the provisions Richard had flagged. The document would have granted Ethan broad authority to manage my financial accounts and property under specified circumstances. It also contained language that could have made it easier for someone to argue that I needed assistance managing my affairs.

Ethan read the page, then the next.

“Why would she want this?”

“I asked her the same question. She told me she was trying to help.”

He turned another page.

“Did you sign any of it?”

“No.”

He exhaled sharply.

“Thank goodness.”

I closed the folder.

“Don't thank goodness yet. We need to understand what she intended, and we need to let the evidence establish that. But you should know something: I will not give anyone control over my property simply because they insist they know what's best for me.”

He nodded, though he still seemed unable to absorb the full implications.

At eleven thirty, Richard arrived carrying his briefcase. He greeted Ethan, set the case on the dining table, and asked me to recount the morning from the beginning. He reviewed the copies of the documents, examined the notes I had made, and listened while I explained the sequence of events.

When I finished, he removed his glasses.

“Margaret, I want you to understand that the medication incident and these documents may turn out to be related, but we cannot assume that yet. We need to establish what evidence supports each conclusion.”

“I agree.”

“Did Brittany ever approach a real estate agent or investor about your property?”

The question caught my attention.

“Not that I know of.”

Richard made a note.

“Then we should find out whether any inquiries were made. I'll review the property records and contact the relevant professionals. If someone has represented that you are unable to manage your affairs, we need to know precisely what was said and to whom.”

Ethan sat quietly while Richard explained the legal steps. For the first time that morning, my son seemed to understand that this was not simply a domestic argument that could be settled with an apology and a promise to behave better.

It was a matter of evidence, authority, and the right to make decisions about my own life.

Before leaving, Richard took copies of the documents and arranged for a formal review of my estate plan. He advised me to secure my financial accounts, notify the relevant institutions that no new authority should be accepted without independent verification, and preserve all communications related to the property.

I followed his advice that afternoon.

I changed the access codes on my accounts, reviewed recent transactions, and confirmed that no power of attorney had been filed or accepted by any institution. Nothing appeared to have been transferred, but the review was not complete.

By evening, the house had grown quiet again.

Ethan had gone to speak with the investigators. Brittany was still being questioned, and I had received no direct communication from her. I sat at the kitchen table with a cup of tea and the folder of documents beside me.

I had spent the day thinking about the black pouch.

Now I was thinking about the possibility that it had not been an isolated act at all.

If Brittany had wanted me to appear unreliable, the airport incident might have been designed to reinforce a story she had already begun telling. If she had wanted control of my property, the paperwork might have been part of a larger plan.

But suspicion was not proof.

I would not confuse the two.

I put the folder in the locked drawer, turned off the kitchen light, and looked through the window toward the lake. The water was dark, and the reflection of the porch lamp trembled on its surface.

The morning had begun with a hidden object.

By nightfall, I had discovered that my family might be hiding something far more consequential.

Click here to continue reading: PART 4: When Investigators Followed the Medication Trail, They Found a Second Story Hidden Behind the First

The first person I wanted to speak with after the examination was my son.
