Her attorney had asked whether I would consider a meeting in a controlled setting, with legal representatives present, so that certain family matters could be discussed without interfering with the ongoing proceedings. Richard advised me that I was under no obligation to agree and that any discussion of the allegations would need to respect the legal process.

I thought about it for two days.

Part of me wanted to hear Brittany explain why she had entered my bedroom and hidden the pouch. Another part knew that an explanation might bring no relief at all. I had spent weeks examining her actions through recordings, messages, and documents. If I met her, I did not want the conversation to become an attempt to persuade me that the evidence meant something other than what it showed.

I told Richard that I would agree to one meeting, provided it took place in his office, with both attorneys present, and that I would not discuss or negotiate the criminal allegations outside the proper process. Richard accepted those conditions and arranged a time.

On the morning of the meeting, I arrived early and sat in the reception area. A receptionist brought me water, which I barely touched. I had rehearsed nothing. I did not want a prepared speech or a dramatic confrontation. I wanted to hear what Brittany chose to say when she could no longer rely on the assumption that I knew nothing about the events of that night.

She arrived with her attorney a few minutes later. Her expression was guarded, and she avoided looking directly at me as we entered the conference room. Richard sat beside me, while Brittany's attorney took the chair nearest the door. The room was small, with a long table and a window overlooking the street.

Richard began by explaining the boundaries of the discussion. No one would ask me to alter my statement, destroy evidence, or make promises concerning the proceedings. If the conversation turned toward matters that should be addressed through the court, the attorneys would stop it.

Brittany nodded. Her hands were clasped so tightly that her knuckles had turned pale.

“I wanted to speak to you because I don't want things to end this way,” she said.

I waited.

She looked down at the table, then raised her eyes toward me.

“I know you're angry. I know you think I wanted to hurt you.”

“I have described what I saw and provided the evidence I have. What I think about your motives is not a substitute for what the investigation establishes.”

Her lips parted, but no answer came immediately.

“I never thought the situation would become this serious,” she said at last.

“What situation did you think you were creating?”

Her attorney shifted in his chair, and Richard reminded us that the discussion should not become an attempt to elicit a statement about the pending allegations. Brittany took a breath and changed direction.

“I thought I was helping Ethan. I thought someone needed to take responsibility for the future.”

“Whose future?”

“Our family's.”

I looked at her carefully.

“Did I ask you to make decisions about my future?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

“Did I tell you I wanted to sell my house?”

“No.”

“Did I agree to give Ethan authority over my finances?”

“No.”

The answers were quiet, but each one made the space between us feel larger.

Brittany rubbed her palms together. “I thought you would eventually understand that you couldn't keep managing everything alone.”

“I was managing everything alone. That was my choice.”

“I know.”

“Do you? Because when I refused to sign the documents, you continued to tell people I was becoming confused. You discussed selling my property with an investor. And you entered my bedroom after midnight and placed an object in my suitcase without my permission.”

She looked away.

Richard interrupted gently, reminding her that the criminal allegations were being addressed through the formal process. Brittany's attorney agreed. The meeting could continue as a family discussion, but it could not become a substitute for testimony.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Brittany said, “I thought I could get everyone to see that you needed help.”

I felt a coldness settle in my stomach.

“By putting medication in my suitcase?”

She did not answer directly.

“I didn't think about what it would feel like for you.”

That was the closest she had come to acknowledging the harm, yet it remained an admission of thoughtlessness rather than an explanation of the plan. I wanted to ask whether she had imagined me standing beside the suitcase while strangers examined my belongings, whether she had considered the possibility that I might be arrested or lose my freedom. But I could not know what she had imagined, and I would not invent her thoughts for her.

“You knew I had refused your paperwork,” I said. “You knew I had refused to sell the house. You knew I was traveling to help my sister. You made choices that put me in a situation I had not agreed to enter.”

Brittany began to cry. The tears were quiet, and she wiped them away with a tissue her attorney handed her. I felt no satisfaction in seeing her distressed. I also felt no obligation to comfort her.

“I don't know how to fix this,” she said.

“You cannot fix it by asking me to pretend it didn't happen.”

She nodded, looking down.

The meeting ended without an agreement or a new understanding of the criminal allegations. Brittany's attorney thanked Richard for arranging it, and both attorneys reminded their clients that any further discussion concerning the case should occur through the appropriate channels. I stood, collected my handbag, and walked out without making a promise about the future.

In the parking lot, I sat in my car for several minutes before turning the key. I had hoped that hearing Brittany speak might make the events easier to understand. Instead, I had learned that even when someone recognized that harm had occurred, recognition did not necessarily produce accountability.

I called Helen on the drive home.

“How did it go?” she asked.

“She said she wanted to help the family.”

“And did you believe her?”

“I believe that she wants me to see her choices as something other than what they were. I don't know whether she understands the difference yet.”

Helen was quiet for a moment.

“You don't have to decide what to do with her today.”

“I know.”

That evening, Ethan came by. He had heard that the meeting had taken place and wanted to know whether I was all right. I told him the conversation had been difficult but that I was glad I had gone under the conditions Richard had set.

“Did she explain why she did it?” he asked.

“Not in a way that answered the question.”

He sat down and stared at the floor.

“She told me she was trying to protect our future.”

“Then she needs to explain why protecting that future required disregarding my decisions.”

He nodded.

“I've asked myself the same thing.”

I told him that the meeting had not changed the evidence or my position. I was still cooperating with the investigation, and I was still protecting my property. He said he understood, then asked whether I would consider talking with him about the future of our relationship.

“Of course,” I said. “But we need to build it on honesty. I won't agree to something simply because it makes a difficult conversation end more quickly.”

He accepted that without argument.

Over the next several days, Ethan began collecting the remaining belongings he needed from the apartment he had shared with Brittany. He arranged for the process to be handled calmly and through appropriate channels. He also continued counseling and met with his attorney to understand the implications of the ongoing proceedings.

I did not ask him to end his marriage, and I did not tell him to reconcile. The decision belonged to him. What I asked was that he stop treating my boundaries as an obstacle to his own peace.

Meanwhile, Richard confirmed that the investigators had received the relevant material from the meeting request and were continuing with the case independently. No new agreement had been made concerning the allegations, and I had not withdrawn any statement or evidence.

I felt relieved that the conversation had not compromised the process.

A few days later, I finally booked my trip to visit Helen. The dates were chosen around the next scheduled legal appointment, and I arranged for my neighbor to check the house while I was away. Richard had copies of the relevant documents, and the investigators knew how to contact me if further information was required.

When I told Ethan, he smiled for the first time in what felt like weeks.

“I'm glad you're going.”

“So am I.”

He helped me carry a small box of travel supplies upstairs. As we passed the bedroom, he glanced toward the place where the suitcase had stood on the night of the incident.

“I keep thinking about how ordinary everything looked,” he said. “The room, the house, the next morning. I don't understand how something so serious could happen in the middle of a normal family visit.”

“Because people don't always announce when they are making a terrible decision.”

He nodded, and we continued down the hall.

That night, I packed my suitcase again. I folded my clothes carefully, placed my medication in its original packaging, and checked my travel documents. I did not feel the same fear I had felt before the first flight. The memory remained, but it no longer controlled every movement I made.

Before closing the suitcase, I paused and looked at its contents. The black pouch was no longer there. The evidence had been collected, documented, and placed in the custody of the authorities. My luggage had returned to being what it had always been: a container for the things I needed when I went somewhere else.

I closed the zipper and placed the bag beside the door.

I could not determine whether Brittany would eventually understand the full consequences of her choices. I could not know whether Ethan would decide to rebuild his marriage or begin a new life. Those outcomes were beyond my control.

What I could decide was whether I would allow the events of the previous weeks to take away the ordinary pleasures I still had.

I chose to travel.

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: The Final Evidence Review Forced Everyone to Confront What Could Be Proved, What Had Been Lost, and What Could Still Be Repaired

Brittany's request reached me through Richard rather than through a direct call.
