Emma came after us, still wearing her dressing gown, while one of her bridesmaids hurried to catch up and ask whether she needed anything. Emma shook her head without slowing down.

I had no idea what awaited us downstairs. The woman might have been an acquaintance of David's, someone involved in the wedding arrangements, or a person who had deliberately used the bakery incident to force a meeting. Yet the look on my husband's face had already told me something important.

He knew exactly who she was.

The lobby was bright with late-morning sunlight. Two members of the venue staff stood near the reception desk, speaking quietly to a woman who had her back to the staircase. She wore dark trousers and a cream blouse, and she held a handbag against her side with both hands. Her hair was neatly arranged, but several strands had escaped near her ears. She looked around my age, perhaps a little younger, and there was a tightness in her posture that suggested she had been waiting for a long time.

David stopped several feet from her.

“You need to leave,” he said.

The woman turned.

For a moment, she simply looked at him. Then she gave a short, bitter laugh.

“That's still your first response, isn't it, David? Tell me to leave before I can say anything.”

His jaw tightened.

“This isn't the place.”

“You knew that yesterday, too.”

I looked from one to the other.

“Who is she?”

Neither answered.

The woman finally noticed me standing behind David. Her eyes moved over my face, then settled on my wedding-day clothes and the handbag hanging from my shoulder. She seemed to recognize something in me, although we had never met.

I stepped forward.

“I'm Laura Harris. You apparently know my husband. You were seen with him at the bakery, and someone using information connected to our family tried to stop me from collecting my daughter's wedding cake. I would appreciate an explanation.”

She stared at me for a moment.

Then she laughed again, but this time there was disbelief in it rather than bitterness.

“Oh, goodness. You think I'm having an affair with David?”

My face grew hot.

“Is that supposed to be funny?”

“No. It's just that you have absolutely no idea what's happening here.”

“Then tell me.”

She opened her mouth, but David moved between us.

“Laura, please.”

I looked at him.

“You have asked me to wait long enough.”

The woman shook her head, watching him with an expression that seemed to combine pity and anger.

“Still trying to protect everybody from the truth?”

“Stop,” he said.

“Why? You think keeping it hidden has made anything easier?”

I could feel my pulse in my throat. The staff members near the desk had begun finding reasons to move farther away, but their attempts at discretion only made the scene more uncomfortable. Somewhere upstairs, a door opened and closed. The wedding was continuing around us, oblivious to the fact that its carefully planned morning had become a confrontation.

The woman looked past David and saw Emma.

Her expression changed.

“Hello, Emma.”

My daughter froze.

I turned toward her so quickly that the movement made my earrings swing against my neck.

“You know her?”

Emma's eyes filled, but she did not look away from the woman.

“Yes.”

“How?”

Before she could answer, Ryan appeared near the foot of the staircase. He was wearing dark trousers and a white shirt, with his tie still hanging loose around his neck. He looked as though someone had called him away from an important task without telling him why.

When he saw the woman, his expression hardened.

“Why are you here?”

She drew a breath.

“Ryan, I wanted to talk to you.”

“You were told not to come.”

“I know what I was told.”

“Then why did you come?”

She glanced toward Emma, then at David.

“Because none of you has been willing to have an honest conversation with me.”

Ryan's hands curled briefly at his sides.

“We've had conversations. You've ignored what I said.”

“I haven't ignored anything.”

“You're standing here after I asked you not to attend.”

The woman flinched, but she did not retreat.

I felt as though I had entered a play halfway through its final act. Everyone else seemed to know the characters, the history, and the reason for the argument. I alone had been given no script.

“Ryan,” I said, “who is this woman?”

He looked at me, then at Emma. His face softened slightly when he saw how upset she was.

“My dad knows her, too,” he said.

That answer made everything worse.

“Your father knows her?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Ryan looked toward the woman.

“Because she's my biological mother.”

For a moment, the words seemed to arrive without meaning. I understood each one separately, but I could not make them fit together. I looked at the woman again, searching her face for some resemblance to Ryan, some feature that might make the revelation feel less impossible.

She had dark eyes and a narrow chin. Ryan had his father's broad shoulders and the same habit of tightening his mouth when he was angry. There was nothing obvious to connect them, at least nothing I had ever noticed.

“Your mother?” I repeated.

Ryan nodded.

The woman lowered her gaze.

I looked at Emma. “You knew?”

She nodded slowly.

“How long?”

“A couple of months.”

I turned toward David.

“And you?”

He looked at me with exhausted resignation.

“Yes.”

The lobby seemed suddenly too bright. I could hear the ventilation system above us, the soft movement of people in the reception room, and the distant sound of a microphone being tested. Those ordinary noises continued while my understanding of the past several weeks shifted into something entirely different.

I had believed my husband might be having an affair. I had worried that my daughter was being pulled into a situation that could threaten her wedding. Now I was discovering that everyone had been protecting a family history I had never known existed.

“Why?” I asked.

No one answered quickly enough.

“Why did nobody tell me?”

David took a step toward me.

“Laura, I can explain.”

“You have been saying that since yesterday.”

“I know.”

“Then explain.”

He glanced at Ryan, who stood rigidly beside Emma. The woman watched them both, her expression guarded, as if she expected every word to become evidence in an argument she had been having for years.

David finally spoke.

“Ryan began asking questions about his mother some time ago. Emma encouraged him to find out what happened. He wanted to understand why she'd left and whether she knew anything about his life now.”

Ryan looked down.

“I didn't know if I wanted to meet her,” he said. “At first, I only wanted answers.”

The woman lifted her head.

“You wanted to know whether I remembered you.”

“I wanted to know why you weren't there.”

Her mouth trembled, but she said nothing.

David continued. “Ryan wasn't comfortable approaching his father about it. Their relationship has always been complicated when the subject of his mother comes up. Emma thought I might be able to help because I could contact her without putting Ryan in the middle.”

I stared at my husband.

“So you secretly arranged to meet her.”

“Yes.”

“And Emma helped.”

“Yes.”

I looked at my daughter. She wiped a tear from her cheek before it could reach her jaw.

“I didn't think you would understand why we needed to keep it private,” she said.

“Did you try asking me?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

“Did any of you consider telling me enough that I wouldn't have to discover this through a cake order?”

Emma closed her eyes.

“No, Mom.”

Her answer was so small that it hurt more than a defense would have.

The woman shifted her handbag from one hand to the other.

“I never intended to cause trouble at the wedding,” she said.

I turned toward her.

“Then why did you call the bakery?”

Her expression changed, and I saw the first sign of uncertainty.

“I wanted to talk to Ryan.”

“By pretending to be my daughter?”

“I didn't say I was Laura's daughter. I said I was the bride.”

“That is exactly what you did.”

She looked toward David, perhaps hoping he would intervene, but he remained silent.

I took a breath.

“You used my name in an instruction that could have left me standing at a bakery with no cake and no explanation. You made someone believe the bride had specifically forbidden her own mother from collecting a paid order. If you wanted a conversation, why not ask for one?”

“Because nobody was listening to me.”

“Ryan is standing right here.”

“And he's already decided he doesn't want me in his life.”

Ryan's voice was quiet.

“I didn't say that forever.”

She looked at him sharply.

“You told me not to come.”

“To the wedding.”

“It's the most important day of your life.”

“And I asked you not to attend.”

The distinction seemed to wound her more than she expected. She blinked several times, then looked away.

I was beginning to understand that her arrival had not been a spontaneous decision. The bakery incident, the meeting with David, and her appearance at the venue were connected. She had found a way to put herself into a situation where everyone would have to acknowledge her.

But I still didn't understand why she believed making trouble for me would help her reach Ryan.

“Did you expect me to call Emma?” I asked.

The woman remained silent.

“Did you expect the bakery to tell me about the instruction?”

She looked down at her handbag.

“Answer her,” Ryan said.

Finally, she nodded.

I felt an unpleasant chill move through me.

“So you knew I would discover the problem.”

“Yes.”

“And you came here because you expected the confusion to bring everyone together.”

“I thought people would finally have to talk.”

“You forced a confrontation on your son's wedding day.”

“I didn't know it would become this.”

“You knew enough.”

David rubbed a hand over his face. Emma stood beside Ryan, her fingers wrapped around his wrist. Neither of them seemed able to look at me for long.

I turned toward my husband.

“Did you know she planned this?”

“No,” he said immediately. “I knew she wanted to speak with Ryan. I didn't know she'd contact the bakery.”

The woman looked at him.

“You told me you understood.”

“I understood that you were hurting. I never agreed to this.”

“You brought me to the bakery.”

“Because you asked to see the cake designs. I thought it might help you understand the wedding preparations. I didn't think you'd use that visit to interfere with the order.”

She stared at him, then let out a breath that sounded almost like a laugh.

“So now you're going to pretend you had nothing to do with it?”

David did not answer.

I looked between them. There was history here, but not the kind I had imagined. Their familiarity came from a secret shared on Ryan's behalf, one that had become more complicated with every attempt to control who knew what.

Yet the most important question remained unanswered.

Why had Ryan asked for his mother to stay away? And what had happened between them during those private meetings that made him so determined not to see her at his wedding?

Before I could ask, Ryan stepped forward.

“You're leaving something out,” he said to the woman.

She looked at him.

“What?”

“You're telling them you only wanted to talk. You're making it sound as though we had one disagreement and everyone shut you out.”

“That's not what I'm doing.”

“Then tell them what happened after I found you.”

Her face went still.

Ryan glanced at Emma, then at David, and finally at me.

“I thought I was ready to meet her,” he said. “I thought finding out who she was might answer some questions I've carried for most of my life. But the first meeting wasn't the problem.”

He paused.

“What happened afterward was.”

The woman tightened her grip on her handbag.

“Ryan, not here.”

He looked at her steadily.

“You chose to come here.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 4: The Mother Who Wanted Her Place Back Revealed Why Ryan Had Closed the Door Just Before His Wedding

David reached the staircase before I did, but I followed close behind.
