I arrived twenty minutes before the scheduled meeting, carrying a leather folder containing copies of the invoices Corinne had assembled. I had barely slept, and the coffee in my hand had gone cold before I reached the elevator. Through the glass walls, I could see several directors already seated around the conference table, speaking in low voices. When I entered, their conversation stopped.

Nathan Price, our chief financial officer, sat beside the chairman. He had worked with me for eleven years and had defended my decisions through difficult negotiations, delayed projects, and two financing disputes. He gave me a brief nod, but he did not smile.

“Grant,” the chairman said, “we need to discuss the expenses identified in the preliminary review.”

I took my seat. “I've seen the report.”

“Then you understand why we're concerned.”

“I understand that some transactions have been presented without their full context.”

Nathan opened his folder. “The problem is that several transactions were categorized as development expenses when the supporting documents indicate personal use. We need to establish whether that was an administrative error or a deliberate decision.”

I looked around the table. “I approved a number of expenses during a very busy period. If something was classified incorrectly, we'll correct it.”

“That's not enough,” Nathan said. “The question isn't whether we can change a description in the ledger. The question is whether the company paid for things that had no business purpose.”

The distinction sounded simple, but it left me with nowhere to hide. I tried to explain that travel sometimes included informal meetings, that relationships with investors could develop over dinners, and that certain accommodation costs were connected to negotiations. The more I spoke, the more I could hear how thin the explanations were.

The Charleston inspection had lasted ninety minutes. The investor lunch had ended before two. The private villa had been booked for the remaining days, and the bracelet had been purchased at a jewelry store nowhere near the development site. I could not explain why those costs had been charged to company accounts without admitting what I had been trying to conceal.

The chairman asked whether I had reviewed the expense classifications before approving them. I said I had relied on the finance department to handle routine entries. Nathan looked at me for several seconds.

“You approved the reports electronically,” he said.

“I approved dozens of reports every month.”

“Which is precisely why we need to understand the controls that allowed this to happen.”

I felt the meeting slipping beyond my influence. For years, I had been accustomed to ending difficult discussions by making a decision and expecting everyone else to move forward. Here, each answer produced another question. The directors were not interested in my confidence or my reputation. They wanted a defensible explanation.

The chairman called for a temporary restriction on my access to certain financial systems while an independent review continued. He also asked me to step aside from day-to-day executive decisions until the board had completed its investigation.

I objected immediately. “You're asking me to surrender control of the company over expenses that can be reimbursed.”

“We're asking you to protect the company while we establish the facts,” he replied.

I looked toward Nathan, expecting him to intervene. He lowered his eyes to the report.

The meeting continued for another hour. By the end, I had agreed to provide records, answer follow-up questions, and avoid contacting employees about the review outside the formal process. No one accused me of a crime, and no one claimed the company was about to collapse. That should have been reassuring. Instead, I left the room with the realization that the people I had expected to support me were now required to scrutinize me.

Wesley was waiting in the corridor.

“Tell me how bad it is,” I said.

“It could be worse, but it isn't going to disappear because you dislike the questions.”

“Can we resolve it?”

“Possibly. That depends on the records and your willingness to be honest about them.”

I looked toward the elevators. “I need to find Corinne.”

“You need to let her attorney manage communication about Corinne.”

“She's my wife.”

Wesley paused before answering. “Legally, she still is. That doesn't give you the right to ignore the boundaries she's set.”

I called him later that afternoon, after I had returned to my office. I told him I wanted Corinne's lawyer to arrange a conversation. He asked me to wait while he checked the appropriate contact information, then warned me that any discussion would have to remain focused on the legal issues and Owen's welfare.

I waited for the call with an impatience I could barely control. When Elena Ruiz, Corinne's attorney, finally answered, I spoke before she had finished introducing herself.

“I need to know where my wife and son are.”

“Mrs. Keaton's location is not something I can disclose without her agreement.”

“I'm Owen's father.”

“And she has not denied that.”

“Then why am I being treated like a stranger?”

“Mr. Keaton, your wife has requested that communication be handled through counsel while the immediate arrangements are established. I suggest you respect that request.”

I gripped the telephone. “What exactly does she want from me?”

“She wants financial security, a stable arrangement for Owen, and time to make decisions without pressure. Those requests are not unreasonable.”

“She's frozen my accounts.”

“The court has been asked to preserve assets while the financial records are reviewed. That is not the same as taking your money.”

“It feels like she's trying to ruin me.”

“Have you considered that she may be trying to prevent the situation from becoming worse?”

I had no answer. Elena gave me the information needed to contact her office about the proposed parenting arrangements, then ended the call politely. She had not raised her voice, and she had not insulted me. Somehow, that made the conversation more difficult. I could not dismiss her as hostile or irrational. She had simply refused to help me regain control of a situation I had created.

That evening, I drove to Tessa's apartment. I did not plan the visit carefully. I only knew that I wanted to speak to someone who would listen without presenting me with another document.

Tessa opened the door wearing a silk robe I had bought her the previous winter. Her expression shifted when she saw my face.

“You look terrible,” she said.

“Thank you.”

“Did you have the meeting?”

“Yes.”

“And?”

“I'm on temporary leave from executive duties.”

She stepped back to let me enter. The apartment was immaculate, its white furniture arranged around the floor-to-ceiling windows. A bottle of wine sat on the kitchen counter. The leather bag I had given her for Christmas rested beside it, and the diamond bracelet lay in a small dish near the sink.

Everything in the room had once looked like evidence of how well I was doing. Now each object reminded me of a payment I might have to explain.

“What happens next?” she asked.

“The company is investigating the expenses.”

“Can they take your position away?”

“They can remove me if they believe I've violated my responsibilities.”

Her face tightened. “But you own the company.”

“I own shares. Other people have rights too.”

She sat down on the sofa, apparently trying to understand what that meant for her. I told her the financial accounts were restricted and that I could not promise when the restrictions would be lifted.

“What about the apartment?” she asked.

I looked at her. “What about it?”

“The rent is paid through the account you set up. If that account is restricted, I need to know whether I should start looking for somewhere else.”

For a moment, I could not speak. My wife had left the house with our newborn son. My position at work was uncertain. I had spent the morning being questioned about money I had no legitimate reason to spend. And Tessa was asking whether I could continue paying for the apartment where our affair had unfolded.

“I don't know,” I said.

“You told me everything was arranged.”

“I thought it was.”

“You said I wouldn't have to worry about money.”

“I know what I said.”

She stood up and walked to the window. “I am not trying to make this harder for you, Grant. But I have a life too. I made decisions based on what you told me.”

I wanted to tell her that my situation was more serious than hers, that she had known I was married and had chosen to continue the relationship. But those words would have required me to admit that I had made promises to her as carelessly as I had made promises to Corinne. I had offered Tessa a version of the future that depended on keeping my existing life intact while pretending it did not exist.

“Did you ever believe I would leave Corinne?” I asked.

Tessa turned from the window. “You told me you were unhappy.”

“That isn't what I asked.”

She looked away.

“I thought you would eventually make a decision.”

“I did make a decision.”

“You went home to your wife every time you had to.”

The accusation landed harder than I expected. I had spent months describing myself as trapped between two women, as though both were pulling me in opposite directions. In truth, I had made sure neither could see the full extent of the arrangement. I had kept my marriage because I wanted the security of it. I had kept the affair because I wanted the excitement of it. I had treated secrecy as a substitute for choosing.

Tessa's eyes filled with tears, but her voice remained firm. “Are you ending this?”

I looked at the bracelet on the counter. “I think it ended before I walked through your door.”

She stared at me. “So now I'm the mistake?”

“No. I made the decisions. You didn't make them for me.”

“Then what was I to you?”

I searched for an answer that would not turn into another lie. Finally, I said, “You were somewhere I could go without having to answer for the rest of my life.”

She flinched. I did too. The sentence was cruel, but it was the first honest description of our relationship I had offered her.

I left the apartment without making any promises about rent, gifts, or the future. On the elevator ride down, I felt neither relief nor satisfaction. I had spent a year believing that Tessa understood me better than Corinne did. But Tessa knew only the man who arrived with reservations, paid the bill, and left before his choices could become inconvenient. I had never asked her to share the difficult parts of my life because I had never intended to share them.

At seven that evening, a message arrived from Elena's office. Corinne had agreed to a brief video call concerning Owen. The message specified that the conversation should remain focused on our son and that no discussion of the financial proceedings would be permitted.

I read the message several times. Then I checked the clock and waited.

At exactly seven, my telephone rang.

Corinne appeared on the screen, seated beside a window in a room I did not recognize. She wore a simple sweater, and her hair was pulled back from her face. Owen slept against her shoulder, his cheek pressed into the fabric near her collarbone. I forgot the questions I had prepared.

“Hi,” I said.

“Hi.”

“Can I see him?”

She adjusted the phone so I could see his face. His tiny fist was curled beneath his chin, and his mouth moved slightly in his sleep.

“Hey, buddy,” I whispered.

He did not wake.

“Is he doing okay?” I asked.

“Yes.”

“Eating normally?”

“Yes, Grant.”

“Sleeping?”

“Not very much. He's still a newborn.”

I nodded, embarrassed by how little I knew about my own son's daily life. I wanted to ask where they were staying, whether Corinne had enough money, and whether she intended to return home. Instead, I watched Owen breathe and tried to memorize the shape of his face.

“Where are you?” I asked finally.

Corinne's expression changed.

“Grant, we agreed this call was about Owen.”

“I know. I just want to understand.”

“Then start by understanding that I'm not ready to discuss anything else.”

I swallowed. “I received the envelope.”

“I assumed you had.”

“The board is investigating the expenses.”

“I'm sorry you're dealing with that.”

Her response was so restrained that I almost mistook it for sympathy. I seized on the opening.

“You knew this could damage my career.”

Corinne shifted Owen slightly, supporting his head with one hand. “Did I make those transactions?”

“No.”

“Did I tell anyone to classify them as business expenses?”

“No.”

“Did I arrange the trips?”

“No.”

“Then please don't ask me to carry responsibility for decisions I didn't make.”

I looked down at the desk. The papers were still spread across it, the highlighted amounts visible beneath the lamp.

“I want to come home,” I said.

Corinne was silent for a moment. Then she looked directly into the camera.

“This isn't my home anymore.”

The sentence was quiet, but it ended the conversation more completely than an argument could have. Owen stirred against her shoulder, and she lowered her eyes to check on him. I wanted to say something that would make her look at me again, something that would remind her of our wedding, our years together, the plans we had made before everything became complicated.

But she was already soothing our son.

The call ended a few minutes later. I sat alone at my desk, staring at the dark screen. For the first time, I understood that the empty house was not the beginning of my punishment. It was the first visible sign that Corinne had stopped organizing her life around the expectation that I would eventually come back.

Click here to continue reading: PART 4: My Wife Agreed to Meet Me Face-to-Face, but the Timeline She Placed Between Us Revealed How Long I Had Been Losing Her

The boardroom was colder than I remembered it.
