2 – My Neighbor Left Town Without Explaining the Watch, but Her Daughter’s Message Revealed That Five Years of My Life Had Been a Lie

That evening, I couldn't concentrate on anything.

I prepared dinner.

I washed the dishes.

I listened to Joel explain something he wanted to build with the cardboard he had hoped to collect.

I answered his questions.

But my mind kept returning to the blue watch.

I could still picture the engraving.

I could still see Ivy's face when she recognized it.

She hadn't looked confused.

She hadn't looked as though she had found something she couldn't explain.

She had looked afraid.

That bothered me more than the watch itself.

If she had bought it secondhand, as she might later claim, why had she reacted that way?

Why had she refused to explain?

And why had a possession that belonged to Nathan ended up in a bag of discarded clothes at her house?

I had no answers.

Joel was unusually quiet while we ate.

Normally, he told me everything that had happened during his day.

He talked about classmates, teachers, and the little projects he wanted to make.

That evening, he kept looking at me.

Eventually, he asked whether Ivy knew where his father was.

I put down the dish towel I was holding.

I told him I didn't know.

He thought about that for a moment.

Then he said he didn't want Nathan to make me sad anymore.

I felt something tighten in my chest.

My son had spent so much of his childhood worrying about things no child should have to worry about.

I told him that taking care of me wasn't his responsibility.

He nodded.

But I could see that he was still thinking about the watch.

So was I.

The next morning, I went to Ivy's house.

I knocked on the door.

Nobody answered.

I tried again.

The house remained silent.

I called her phone, but she didn't pick up.

I returned home and tried to convince myself that there might be a reasonable explanation.

Perhaps Nathan had sold the watch.

Perhaps Ivy had bought some of his belongings without knowing who he was.

Perhaps there was a detail I hadn't considered.

I tried every explanation I could think of.

None explained the look on her face.

By Sunday morning, I had begun to feel uneasy whenever I looked toward her house.

Then I noticed a moving truck outside.

Ivy was carrying boxes from her home.

I watched her for a moment before walking over.

I asked whether she was moving.

She stiffened when she saw me.

She said it wasn't a good time.

I reminded her that I still wanted an explanation about Nathan's watch.

She claimed she had purchased it secondhand.

I asked how a secondhand watch could still have the personal engraving I had ordered.

She didn't answer immediately.

I asked whether she had been involved with Nathan.

Her reaction was sharp.

She denied it.

I wanted to believe her.

But she had refused to answer too many simple questions.

I asked why she was leaving so suddenly.

She insisted that she wasn't running away.

Then she said something I couldn't understand.

She told me Nathan had never been worth the trouble he caused.

Before I could ask what she meant, she went back inside.

I stood on the pavement while the movers continued carrying her belongings out.

I had no proof of anything beyond the watch.

But I knew Ivy had recognized it.

And I knew she would rather leave the neighborhood than tell me why she had it.

That afternoon, my phone received a message from a number I didn't recognize.

The sender said her mother had told her what happened.

She believed we needed to speak.

I asked who she was.

The answer came almost immediately.

She introduced herself as Vanessa.

Then she told me she was Nathan's wife.

I read the message several times.

For five years, I had wondered whether Nathan had left our marriage because there was another woman.

I had never received a confession.

I had never seen proof.

I had simply lived with the question.

Now a stranger had answered it in a few words.

I called her.

When she answered, I asked her to explain what she meant.

She said she was Nathan's wife, although they were separated.

Then she told me she was Ivy's daughter.

I sat down.

I couldn't think of anything to say.

Vanessa suggested that we meet.

I agreed.

We arranged to see each other at a coffee shop the following afternoon.

When I arrived, she was already there.

She looked tired.

There was something in her expression that made me think she hadn't slept well.

Before we sat down properly, she apologized for what her mother had done.

I asked how long she had known about me.

She said she had learned the truth after Ivy decided to move.

Her mother had apparently realized that I might eventually contact Vanessa and wanted to explain herself first.

I found that difficult to believe.

If Ivy had wanted to explain, she could have spoken to me directly.

Instead, she had shut the door in my face.

Still, I was there to hear the truth.

I asked Vanessa to start at the beginning.

She told me that she had met Nathan through work.

He had said his marriage was already in trouble.

He had presented himself as a man whose relationship was ending, rather than a husband who was about to abandon his family.

Vanessa admitted that she had wanted to believe him.

I asked whether she had known about Joel.

She said she had.

I couldn't hide my disappointment.

She lowered her eyes.

Then she explained that she had become pregnant.

Nathan had promised to make a decision about his future.

Eventually, he married her after my divorce was finalized.

They had a daughter named Lily.

She was four years old.

I sat quietly, trying to absorb what I had just learned.

Nathan had another family.

While I was working two jobs and trying to help Joel understand why his father never called, Nathan had been building a new life.

I asked Vanessa why Ivy had moved into our neighborhood.

Her expression changed.

She said Nathan had asked her mother to do it.

I thought I had misunderstood.

I asked her to repeat herself.

She explained that Nathan wanted someone nearby who could keep track of me and Joel.

I stared at her.

I had welcomed Ivy into our lives.

I had let her spend time with my son.

I had accepted her offers of help when I was struggling.

I had answered her questions because I believed she was concerned about us.

All those memories suddenly felt different.

Vanessa told me that she hadn't understood the arrangement when it began.

Her mother had only admitted the reason for moving after deciding to leave.

I asked what information Ivy had been giving Nathan.

Vanessa said her mother had reported on Joel's happiness, his school, his interests, and his activities.

She had also passed along information about my financial difficulties and whether I was seeing anyone.

I remembered all those conversations.

The questions about swimming lessons.

The questions about money.

The questions about Nathan.

The questions about whether I had met another man.

I had answered because I thought Ivy cared.

Now I understood why she always seemed to want one more detail.

I asked whether Nathan had paid her.

Vanessa said he had helped with her rent.

I stared at the table.

Nathan had told me, through his actions and his refusal to support Joel, that he didn't have enough concern to remain involved in his son's life.

Yet he had found the money to pay someone to report on us.

I asked why he would do that.

Vanessa said he had told her mother that I was preventing him from seeing Joel.

I shook my head.

Nathan had never asked me to arrange a visit.

He hadn't called to ask about school events.

He hadn't tried to make plans for birthdays.

He hadn't sent a message asking to speak to his son.

He knew where we lived.

He knew how to reach me.

And apparently, he had someone living a few houses away who could tell him what was happening in our home.

I asked Vanessa why he hadn't contacted Joel himself.

She hesitated before answering.

She believed Nathan had used the information to reassure himself that Joel was doing well.

As long as someone told him his son was happy, he could pretend his absence wasn't hurting anyone.

I felt sick.

For years, I had made excuses for Nathan.

I had softened the truth whenever Joel asked why his father didn't call.

I had imagined that perhaps Nathan was struggling with the divorce.

I had hoped that one day he would realize how much time he was losing.

But the man I had been making excuses for had apparently been receiving updates all along.

He knew Joel was growing up.

He knew we were struggling.

He knew his son was living without him.

And he had still chosen to stay away.

I sat there with my hands wrapped around my coffee cup.

Then I asked Vanessa about the watch.

She looked down.

She told me that Nathan had left her two months earlier.

I almost laughed.

I asked whether he had used the same explanation he had given me.

She said he had told her he needed time and space.

There it was again.

The same pattern.

The same decision to leave.

The same expectation that everyone else would deal with the consequences.

Vanessa explained that Nathan had also left her with financial problems.

There were outstanding credit card balances and a car loan.

He had promised to handle the bills.

He hadn't followed through.

I didn't need to ask whether she felt betrayed.

I could see it in her face.

Then she told me about Lily.

Her daughter kept asking when her father would come home.

I stopped thinking about Vanessa as the woman who had married my husband.

For a moment, I saw only another mother sitting across from me, trying to find words for a child who couldn't understand why her father was absent.

I remembered Joel at six years old.

I remembered the questions.

I remembered the way he used to look toward the front door whenever a car stopped outside.

I knew what Vanessa was going through.

It didn't erase what had happened between us.

But it made the situation harder to dismiss as someone else's problem.

I asked where Nathan was living now.

Vanessa said she believed he was staying with someone else.

Then she told me he was engaged.

His fiancée was named Claire.

I stared at her.

She had learned about the engagement only recently.

We found his public announcement online.

There he was, smiling beside a woman wearing a diamond ring.

His caption spoke about their future together.

I couldn't help asking Vanessa whether he bought his promises in bulk.

She laughed.

Then she began to cry.

I pushed the napkins across the table.

We sat quietly until she could speak again.

I told her something she needed to understand.

We were not friends.

I wasn't pretending that the past didn't matter.

She had known about Joel when she began her relationship with Nathan.

That fact would never disappear.

But Lily was a child.

Joel was a child.

Neither of them had chosen the adults responsible for them.

And neither child deserved to spend years wondering whether they were worth a phone call.

Vanessa listened.

Then she asked what I thought we should do.

For the first time since receiving her message, I felt that I had a choice.

I could keep asking Nathan why he had abandoned us.

I could keep waiting for an apology that might never come.

Or I could stop allowing him to decide how much responsibility he had to carry.

I told Vanessa that we needed to consult our attorneys.

We needed to address the support obligations he had ignored.

And we needed to make sure he could no longer tell one story to me and another to her.

She agreed.

We left the coffee shop with a plan.

It wasn't revenge.

It was a decision to stop protecting a man from the consequences of his own choices.

As we reached the parking lot, Vanessa looked at me.

She said our plan was going to spoil Nathan's Thursday.

I smiled.

He had ruined enough of our ordinary days.

For once, we were going to decide what happened next.

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: We
