3 – We Compared Every Promise Nathan Had Broken, Then Prepared for the First Conversation He Couldn’t Escape by Walking Away

Vanessa and I kept talking after we left the coffee shop.

We had spent years living separate lives, but the details of Nathan's behavior were disturbingly familiar.

He had made promises to both of us.

He had left both of us with financial problems.

He had offered explanations that made his choices sound unavoidable.

And when those explanations stopped working, he had simply moved on.

I told Vanessa that Nathan had always known how to make himself sound reasonable.

He rarely needed to shout.

He only needed to say that things were complicated, that he needed time, or that someone else had misunderstood him.

For a long time, I had accepted those answers because I wanted to believe our marriage had meant something to him.

Vanessa admitted that she had done the same.

She had believed his account of our divorce.

She had believed he was trying to move toward a better life.

She had believed his promises about the future.

Neither of us had understood how much he was leaving out.

Now, with the two of us comparing what we knew, his explanations became harder to defend.

Vanessa told me that Nathan had claimed I wouldn't allow him to see Joel.

I reminded her that he had never made a serious attempt to arrange a visit.

He had my number.

He knew our address.

He could have called me at any time.

Instead, he had asked Ivy to keep him informed from a distance.

Vanessa covered her face when she understood what that meant.

Her mother had become the person through whom Nathan kept track of the child he claimed he couldn't reach.

I told her that I had trusted Ivy.

I had let her into our lives because I thought she was helping a single mother who had too much on her shoulders.

I had accepted money from her when I was struggling.

I had allowed her to spend time with Joel.

I had shared details I would never have given to someone I didn't trust.

The realization made me feel foolish.

But Vanessa said she felt responsible, too.

She had known her mother was close to us.

She hadn't known why.

I told her that the responsibility for Nathan's choices belonged to Nathan.

That didn't mean every other person had acted well.

It meant we needed to be honest about who had done what.

We agreed to let our attorneys deal with the legal questions.

We would gather the information we had and make sure each of us understood what could be done about the support owed to our children.

We wouldn't rely on Nathan's promises anymore.

We wouldn't accept another explanation in place of action.

And we wouldn't let him turn one of us against the other by claiming that the other woman was the problem.

For the first time, I felt that the situation was no longer entirely beyond my control.

That evening, Ivy called.

Her name appeared on my phone, and I stared at it for several seconds before answering.

She sounded upset.

She said she had never intended to hurt me.

I asked how she could say that after spending years reporting information about my son to his father.

She insisted Nathan only wanted to know how Joel was doing.

I told her that if he wanted to know how his son was doing, he could have asked the boy himself.

She said she believed she was helping.

I had heard enough.

I told her she had made it easier for Nathan to avoid the responsibilities he owed Joel.

Then I ended the call.

I didn't shout.

I didn't ask her to apologize.

I didn't want another explanation that turned her choices into a favor.

For years, I had mistaken her attention for affection.

Now I understood that the two things were not the same.

The following morning, Vanessa called me.

She said the arrangements were ready.

Nathan had agreed to meet her to discuss their separation.

I asked whether he knew I would be there.

She said he didn't.

He believed he was attending an ordinary meeting with his wife.

Vanessa sounded almost amused when she told me he had promised to settle everything peacefully.

I found that difficult to imagine.

Nathan had never been particularly interested in resolving the problems he left behind.

But he was apparently willing to discuss matters when he believed he could control the conversation.

That was about to change.

We chose a restaurant and agreed to arrive separately.

We would bring the information we had gathered and let the attorneys handle the legal matters afterward.

There was no need for shouting.

There was no need to make threats.

We wanted Nathan to understand that his responsibilities hadn't disappeared simply because he had walked away.

I spent part of the morning thinking about Joel.

He knew the watch had belonged to his father.

He knew Ivy had refused to explain why she had it.

But he didn't know the full story.

I wasn't ready to tell him everything.

I wanted to understand what was happening before I placed more of Nathan's choices on his shoulders.

Joel had already spent too much time wondering whether his father remembered him.

I didn't want him to feel responsible for what the adults had done.

That afternoon, he sat at the kitchen table working on another cardboard project.

I watched him cut a piece of cardboard and carefully fold the edges.

He was concentrating so hard that he didn't notice me standing nearby.

I thought about the watch again.

It had once been a symbol of the future I believed Nathan and I would share.

Now it had become the object that exposed the truth about Ivy.

But the watch wasn't the most important thing I had learned.

The most painful discovery was that Nathan had known about Joel all along.

I had spent five years worrying that my son might believe his father had forgotten him.

Now I knew that someone had been supplying information about his life.

That didn't make the abandonment easier to understand.

If anything, it made it harder.

Nathan had been given opportunities to care.

He had chosen not to use them.

I looked at Joel and reminded myself that I couldn't change the past.

I could only decide how honestly I would handle the future.

On Thursday, I left home early enough to reach the restaurant before Vanessa.

The journey gave me time to think.

I remembered the day Nathan left.

I remembered the phone call three days later.

I remembered all the evenings I had worked until I could barely keep my eyes open.

I remembered Joel asking about birthdays and phone calls.

I had protected Nathan with excuses because I thought I was protecting my son from disappointment.

I understood now that the excuses had also prevented Joel from understanding that his father's absence was not his fault.

That was something I would have to put right.

I reached the restaurant and chose a table.

Vanessa arrived a few minutes later.

She sat down across from me with a menu in her hands.

I asked whether she planned to order.

She said she was considering the most expensive steak on the menu.

I asked whether she had suddenly become wealthy.

She said she simply wanted to imagine Nathan's expression when the bill arrived.

I laughed.

It felt strange to laugh with her.

There was so much history between us.

I had once imagined her as the person who had taken my husband away.

She had imagined me as the person preventing him from returning to his son.

Both of us had been living with stories Nathan had given us.

That didn't mean we had no responsibility for our choices.

It meant we finally had a chance to look at those choices honestly.

Vanessa asked whether I was ready.

I told her I wasn't.

She admitted that she wasn't ready either.

Then we waited.

Ten minutes later, Nathan walked into the restaurant.

He was looking at his phone as he approached the table.

He began speaking to Vanessa before he had properly looked up.

He said he had been thinking about their recent conversation.

Then he saw me.

He stopped.

For a moment, he looked as though he couldn't decide whether to sit down or leave.

He said my name.

I greeted him calmly.

His eyes moved between Vanessa and me.

He wanted to know what was happening.

Vanessa told him that his past and present had finally met.

He didn't smile.

He asked whether this was some kind of joke.

I invited him to sit down.

He remained standing.

He reminded Vanessa that they were supposed to be discussing their separation.

She told him that was exactly what they were doing.

She had simply decided he might find it useful to speak to someone who had already experienced a marriage with him.

Nathan's face reddened.

He turned toward me and accused Vanessa of manipulating me.

I raised an eyebrow.

I told him it was interesting that he had chosen that explanation so quickly.

Vanessa had expected him to blame me.

I had expected him to blame her.

Neither prediction required much imagination.

He looked at us as if we had both become unreasonable overnight.

Then he asked whether we had lost our minds.

I shook my head.

We had simply reached the end of our patience.

I opened the folder I had brought.

I told Nathan that Joel was eleven years old and that he had spent five years avoiding the responsibilities he owed his son.

Nathan's expression tightened.

I explained that my attorney was reviewing the support obligations connected to our divorce agreement.

Vanessa placed her own folder on the table.

She told him she had begun the legal process to secure support for Lily.

He stared at the documents.

Then he asked whether we were seriously planning to take legal action against him.

I told him we were making sure our children received the support they were entitled to.

He called the situation ridiculous.

Vanessa reminded him that he had two children, a history of broken promises, and another engagement, yet he still seemed to believe everyone else was treating him unfairly.

Nathan looked away.

I waited until he looked back at me.

Then I asked whether Claire knew about Joel and Lily.

His expression changed immediately.

He told me to leave Claire out of it.

Vanessa picked up her phone.

She explained that she had already contacted Claire.

Nathan went pale.

He demanded to know why Vanessa had done that.

She said Claire deserved to know the truth about the man she was planning to marry.

He protested that she had no right to interfere.

I found that complaint difficult to take seriously.

For years, Nathan had interfered in our lives without giving us the truth about his own choices.

Now that someone had told Claire what he had done, he was suddenly concerned about fairness.

His phone vibrated.

He glanced at the screen and turned it face down.

A moment later, it rang.

Vanessa looked at him.

She asked whether Claire was trying to reach him.

He didn't answer.

I could see that he wanted to leave.

He had entered the restaurant expecting to manage a conversation with one person.

Instead, he was facing two women who had compared notes and stopped believing his explanations.

I didn't feel triumphant.

I felt tired.

I had wanted answers for five years.

Now I understood that no explanation from Nathan could return the time he had lost with Joel.

But he could no longer use silence to avoid every responsibility.

That was enough for the moment.

Click here to continue reading: PART 4: Nathan Thought He Could Walk Out of One More Conversation, Until Two
