Just you and me. No lawyers.

I read it twice.

For several minutes, I did nothing.

The last time Vanessa had wanted a private conversation, I had been expected to accept her explanation before she had finished giving it.

She had laughed at the pool.

She had dismissed my injury.

She had called the consequences of her own actions a misunderstanding.

Later, when the financial investigation began, she had described herself as the victim of people who didn't understand how business worked.

I remembered all of it.

I also remembered that she had pleaded guilty.

The legal process had established facts that no family argument could erase.

Her message did not change those facts.

I typed a reply.

What do you want to discuss?

She answered almost immediately.

I want to apologize.

I stared at the screen.

An apology was something I had wanted once.

For a long time, I had imagined it would arrive with tears, a confession, and an admission that she had known exactly what she was doing.

But wanting an apology and being ready to hear one were not the same thing.

I showed Daniel the message that evening.

He read it without commenting.

"What do you think?" I asked.

"I think you don't owe her a meeting just because she's ready to have one."

"What if I want to hear what she says?"

"Then you can hear it. But you can decide the conditions."

I looked at him.

"What conditions?"

"Somewhere public. A time limit. No promises about money or the company. And you can leave whenever you want."

I considered that.

"She asked for no lawyers."

"That doesn't mean you have to discuss legal matters. If she brings them up, you can stop the conversation."

I nodded.

He wasn't telling me whether to forgive her.

He was reminding me that the decision belonged to me.

The next morning, I agreed to meet her at a café near the courthouse.

I chose a table beside the front window.

I told her I could stay for thirty minutes.

I also told her that I would not discuss the legal proceedings, company assets, or any request for financial help.

She replied, I understand.

On the day of the meeting, I arrived ten minutes early.

I ordered tea and placed my phone face down on the table.

When Vanessa entered, I almost failed to recognize her.

She had lost weight.

Her hair was shorter, and she wore a plain gray sweater instead of the expensive clothes she used to choose for company events.

She looked tired.

I did not know whether that tiredness came from remorse, stress, or the consequences of losing the life she had built.

I couldn't know.

She stopped beside the table.

"Thank you for coming."

I nodded toward the chair.

She sat down and wrapped both hands around her coffee cup.

For a while, she looked at the table rather than at me.

Then she spoke.

"I know I can't undo what I did."

I waited.

"I know saying I'm sorry doesn't change the money, the company, or what happened at the pool."

My shoulders tightened slightly.

She noticed.

"I shouldn't have laughed," she continued. "You were injured, and I knew you were struggling. I wanted everyone to think I was funny. I didn't care how it made you feel."

It was the first time she had acknowledged the incident without calling it a joke.

I felt no sudden relief.

I felt sad.

"I kept thinking about that day," I said. "Not because you pushed me into the water. Because you watched me struggle afterward and still acted like I was the one ruining everything."

Vanessa lowered her eyes.

"I know."

"You don't get to decide what counts as harmless for someone else."

"I know."

"And I don't know whether you understood that then or only understand it now."

She nodded.

"I can't ask you to believe me."

That answer was better than a promise.

I took a sip of tea.

She told me she had been angry when the investigation began.

She had blamed Martin, the auditors, the board, and me.

She had convinced herself that the financial arrangements were temporary solutions to problems she could fix later.

But she had continued making decisions that benefited her and her boyfriend.

She had concealed information.

She had signed documents she knew were misleading.

"I told myself I was protecting what Dad built," she said. "But I was protecting myself."

I listened without interrupting.

There were details I already knew from the legal proceedings.

There were other things she described in general terms.

I did not ask for a confession beyond what had already been established.

That was not my role.

"What do you want from me now?" I asked.

She looked startled.

"Nothing."

I waited.

She swallowed.

"I mean, I want you to forgive me. But I know I can't demand that."

"Then why did you ask to meet?"

"Because I wanted to say it to your face."

She looked at me for the first time.

"I was jealous of you."

I hadn't expected that.

"Of me?"

"You were always the one who noticed things. You asked questions. You wanted to understand how everything worked. Dad trusted me with the company, and I thought that meant I was better than you."

She pressed her fingers against the cup.

"When you questioned my decisions, I felt like you were trying to prove I didn't deserve what I had."

"I was trying to understand what you were doing."

"I know that now."

I let the silence remain.

She did not ask me to tell her she was still a good person.

She did not ask me to blame Dad.

She did not say that the family should put the past behind us.

That mattered.

But it did not make her safe to trust.

"I can accept that you're sorry," I said. "I can't promise that I'll trust you again."

She nodded slowly.

"I understand."

"Trust isn't something you get because you apologized. It's something people decide after they see how you behave over time."

"I know."

"And even if I forgive you, that doesn't mean we'll have the relationship we had before."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"I don't expect things to go back to how they were."

I wasn't sure whether that was true.

Perhaps she meant it.

Perhaps she simply understood that the old arrangement was gone.

Either way, I did not make her prove it in that moment.

Our thirty minutes were almost over.

Vanessa wiped her eyes with a paper napkin.

"I miss you," she said.

I looked at the woman across from me.

I missed parts of my sister, too.

I missed the years when we could laugh over dinner without wondering what someone was hiding.

I missed the version of our family I had believed we possessed.

But I did not miss the pressure to ignore my instincts so everyone else could stay comfortable.

"I miss what I thought we had," I told her.

She nodded.

I stood and put on my coat.

"Thank you for meeting me," she said.

I paused.

"I hope you keep doing the work you need to do."

It was not a promise.

It was not a threat.

It was simply the truth.

Outside, the air was cool, and traffic moved steadily along the street.

I walked to my car without looking back at the café.

When I reached home, Daniel was in the kitchen preparing dinner.

He looked up.

"How was it?"

"Hard."

"Do you regret going?"

I thought about the question.

"No."

"Do you feel better?"

"Not exactly."

He nodded as though that answer made sense.

I put my bag on the counter.

"I think I needed to hear her take responsibility. But I don't feel like I owe her anything now."

"You don't."

That night, I slept more peacefully than I had expected.

The meeting had not fixed our relationship.

It had not erased the pool, the investigation, or the years of being dismissed.

It had simply allowed me to hear an apology without surrendering my judgment.

For the first time, I understood that forgiveness did not have to be a door thrown wide open.

It could be a decision to stop carrying the argument everywhere I went.

I could put the weight down without inviting the person who had handed it to me back into my life.

Source: kaylestore.net

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: When the Company Offered Me a Permanent Place at the Table, I Finally Understood That Being Needed Was Not the Same as Being Free

Vanessa's message arrived on a Tuesday morning.
