\u201cIt identifies the parties and explains the purpose of the vehicle,\u201d Evelyn said. \u201cIt also confirms that the investment was established before Claire\u2019s marriage. We are still verifying the subsequent transactions and distributions.\u201d<\/p>\n
I looked at the schedule.<\/p>\n
My grandfather\u2019s signature appeared at the bottom of the final page.<\/p>\n
I knew his handwriting immediately.<\/p>\n
He always wrote his surname with a long, deliberate stroke beneath the last letter.<\/p>\n
I had seen that signature on birthday cards, property deeds, and the envelope containing the letter he left me.<\/p>\n
For a moment, the office faded around me.<\/p>\n

\u201cAgreed,\u201d Evelyn replied.<\/p>\n
When the call ended, I remained seated.<\/p>\n
I had expected to feel relief.<\/p>\n

I did not want to know whether Aaron was disappointed, relieved, or angry.<\/p>\n

Before I left, Nathan reviewed the proposed response to Aaron\u2019s settlement offer.<\/p>\n
