10 – The First Time Aaron Came to Marblehead, I Did Not Open the Door

I arrived at Marblehead on Friday afternoon.

The wind had picked up, and the harbor was rough enough to send small waves against the rocks below the garden.

I carried my bag inside and put the kettle on.

Then I opened the windows for a few minutes, letting the cold air move through the rooms.

The house smelled like cedar again.

I had missed that smell.

I spent the afternoon sorting my grandfather’s papers into labeled folders.

I kept the original documents in one drawer and made copies for Nathan and Evelyn.

I also wrote down the name of the former adviser whose firm had recovered the missing schedule.

I wanted a complete record of where every document came from.

It was the kind of work my grandfather would have understood.

At five twenty, someone knocked on the front door.

I was in the kitchen, washing a plate.

I assumed it was a neighbor.

When I opened the door, Aaron stood on the porch.

He wore a dark coat and held a small paper bag in one hand.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

He looked tired.

His hair was untidy, and there were shadows beneath his eyes that I had not noticed during our last conversation.

“I called your apartment,” he said.

“I am not at the apartment.”

“I gathered that.”

He glanced past me toward the hallway.

“Can I come in?”

I kept my hand on the door.

“Why are you here?”

“I wanted to talk without lawyers.”

“We have already agreed to communicate through them about the divorce.”

“I am not here to negotiate the settlement.”

“Then what are you here to discuss?”

He looked down at the paper bag.

“I brought something for you.”

I did not move.

He seemed to recognize that the gesture was not going to make the conversation easier.

“It's the lemon cake from the bakery near your parents’ house,” he said. “You used to like it.”

I remembered the bakery.

We had stopped there after visiting my parents during the first year of our marriage.

Aaron had bought two slices because I could never decide between the lemon cake and the almond tart.

It was a kind memory.

That was what made it difficult.

“I appreciate the thought,” I said. “But I don't think you should be here.”

His expression changed.

“Claire, this is our house.”

“No. This is my house.”

He looked at me as though I had slapped him.

I had never corrected him so directly before.

He had stayed here many times.

He had hosted friends here, invited colleagues for dinner, and spent summer weekends reading on the porch.

He had never paid rent.

He had never asked to own it.

But somewhere along the way, he had begun speaking about the house as though our marriage had automatically made every part of my life his.

“I know the deed is in your name,” he said.

“It was in my name before we married.”

“I know that.”

“Then please don't call it our house.”

He looked toward the harbor.

For several seconds, I thought he might leave.

Instead, he set the paper bag on the porch railing.

“I don't understand how you can be so calm about all this.”

“I am not calm.”

“You sound calm.”

“I have learned to speak quietly when I am upset.”

He looked back at me.

That seemed to reach him more than my earlier words.

I had often lowered my voice during our arguments because Aaron became louder when he felt challenged.

He had mistaken my silence for agreement so many times that I had begun to mistake it for peace.

“I want five minutes,” he said.

I considered closing the door.

Then I remembered that I did not have to be afraid of a conversation simply because I could not control its outcome.

“Five minutes,” I said. “We stay here.”

He nodded.

I stepped onto the porch and closed the door behind me.

The wind pushed at the sleeves of my sweater.

Aaron tucked his hands into his coat pockets.

“I spoke with my lawyers,” he began. “They explained that the investment schedule doesn't establish what they originally thought it might.”

“That sounds like something you should discuss with them.”

“I wanted to hear it from you.”

“Why?”

“Because I don't want there to be secrets between us.”

I looked at him.

The words were so close to something he might have said before the affair that I almost missed the difference.

We had secrets because he had chosen to keep them.

I had hired Nathan because I had finally stopped pretending that secrecy was the same thing as privacy.

“There aren't any secrets I am trying to keep from you,” I said. “There are documents being reviewed by professionals. When the review is complete, the relevant information will be disclosed.”

He shook his head.

“You make everything sound like a business meeting.”

“You came to my house to discuss a financial review.”

“I came because I miss you.”

The wind moved through the bare branches beside the porch.

I looked at him for a long moment.

“I miss parts of you too,” I said.

His face softened.

Then I continued.

“But missing someone doesn't mean the marriage is still right for you.”

He looked away.

“I made mistakes.”

“Yes.”

“I know I hurt you.”

“Yes.”

“I can't change what happened.”

“No.”

He swallowed.

“Then what do you want me to say?”

I had asked myself that question so many times that I knew the answer by heart.

I wanted him to tell me the truth without making me prove that I deserved it.

I wanted him to stop explaining his choices as though they had been accidents.

I wanted him to understand that the betrayal had not begun when I discovered Jasmine.

It had begun when he decided that I could be kept in the dark while he continued living as though our marriage were intact.

But I did not believe another speech would make him understand.

“I want you to respect my decision,” I said.

He stared at me.

“You're really going to throw away three years?”

“I am not throwing them away. I am accepting that they are over.”

He shook his head again.

“I thought we were happy.”

“Sometimes we were.”

“Then why can't we fix it?”

“Because I cannot be the only person trying to make the truth bearable.”

His eyes moved toward the door.

For a moment, he looked like the man who had stood beside me at my grandfather’s funeral.

He had held my hand that day and said I would never have to face anything alone.

I had believed him.

I still remembered how his thumb had moved over my knuckles while the minister spoke.

That memory hurt more than I expected.

“I didn't come here to fight,” he said.

“Then don't.”

He looked down at his shoes.

“I don't know how to lose you.”

I felt something tighten in my chest.

I had wanted to hear those words once.

I had wanted them when I was waiting for him to come home.

I had wanted them when he dismissed my questions.

I had wanted them when I realized that his attention had become something I had to earn.

Now they arrived too late to repair what had happened.

“You should have thought about that before you decided I could live with the truth only when you were ready to tell it.”

He closed his eyes briefly.

When he opened them, he looked older.

“Can I call you next week?”

“You can speak with Nathan about the divorce.”

“Claire.”

“I mean it, Aaron.”

He nodded slowly.

Then he picked up the paper bag.

“I thought you might like the cake.”

“I remember.”

He held it out.

I accepted it because refusing it would not change anything.

“Thank you.”

He walked down the steps.

At the gate, he stopped and looked back.

I stood beside the door with the bag in my hands.

For a moment, I thought he might say something else.

Instead, he nodded once and continued to his car.

I watched until the taillights disappeared around the bend.

Then I went inside.

I placed the cake on the kitchen counter.

I did not open it.

I sat at the table and cried.

Not because I wanted him to come back.

Because I finally understood that the man I had been waiting for might never exist in the way I had imagined.

The Aaron who remembered my favorite cake was real.

So was the Aaron who had lied to me.

I could not keep one and pretend the other had never existed.

After a while, I washed my face and made tea.

I put the cake in the refrigerator.

I would decide what to do with it later.

The next morning, Nathan called to say that Aaron’s lawyers had accepted most of the proposed changes to the settlement.

There were still details to resolve.

The forensic review was continuing, and the final financial disclosures had not yet been completed.

But the confidentiality language had been narrowed.

The separate property provisions had been clarified.

And the parties had agreed that neither would make further public statements about the marriage while the divorce was pending.

I listened carefully.

“Does this mean we are close to an agreement?” I asked.

“It means we are closer than we were,” Nathan replied. “I don't want you to assume the remaining issues are settled until everything is documented.”

“I understand.”

“There is one other matter.
