Evelyn and the accountant are here because we need answers."

"Answers about what?"

Evelyn opened a folder.

She placed several documents on the table.

The first showed transfers from Margaret's accounts.

The second contained invoices described as maintenance expenses.

The third listed payments to Brandon's business.

I recognized the documents from my own review.

Seeing them laid out in front of Vanessa made my stomach tighten.

These weren't abstract figures anymore.

They were questions about our family.

Brandon leaned forward.

"Those were legitimate business transactions."

The accountant didn't argue with him.

"We're asking for the supporting records that establish what services were provided and how the amounts were calculated."

"Everything was handled properly."

"Then the documentation should help clarify that."

Brandon looked at Vanessa.

She stared at the papers.

I could hear the clock above the kitchen doorway ticking.

It was the only sound in the room for several seconds.

Then Evelyn placed another page in front of my daughter.

"This transaction was authorized two days after Margaret lost consciousness."

Vanessa's face lost some of its color.

I had already heard the information from Evelyn.

But watching my daughter read the date was different.

She picked up the page.

"That's impossible."

Evelyn waited.

Vanessa looked at the signature and then at the transaction details.

"Mom had already agreed to the expenses."

"That may be your position," Evelyn said. "But the timing and authorization raise questions that must be resolved."

Brandon reached across the table.

"Vanessa, don't answer anything else."

His voice was sharper than before.

She turned toward him.

"I'm not doing anything wrong."

"I didn't say you were."

"You just told me not to answer."

"Because this is becoming a legal matter."

He looked at Evelyn.

"We'll review these documents with our own attorney."

"You're entitled to do that," Evelyn replied.

The accountant explained that the transactions under examination totaled approximately $640,000.

The amount included transfers connected to Brandon's business and payments whose supporting records were incomplete or questionable.

They had preserved the evidence.

They were preparing to pursue civil recovery if the review established that money had been improperly transferred.

Vanessa pushed her chair back.

"You're talking about taking your own daughter to court, Dad?"

I looked at her.

I wanted to see the little girl who used to sit beside Margaret at the kitchen table, drawing pictures while I worked late.

I wanted to recognize the person standing in front of me.

Instead, I saw a woman who was asking me to ignore a serious financial problem because the person under scrutiny was her.

"That money belonged to your mother," I said.

Her eyes narrowed.

"She would have given it to me anyway."

I took a breath.

"That isn't the same as taking it without proper authorization."

"You're making assumptions."

"No. I'm asking questions."

She looked toward Brandon.

He had gone quiet.

The folder he'd brought remained unopened beside his hand.

I could see that he wanted the meeting to end.

So did I.

But ending the meeting wouldn't make the documents disappear.

Evelyn closed one folder and opened another.

"We also need to clarify the ownership and scope of the mountain property."

Vanessa looked at me.

"What does that have to do with anything?"

I didn't answer immediately.

I reached for the preliminary valuation and slid it across the table.

"This is part of what your mother left me."

Brandon picked up the report.

He scanned the first page.

Then he turned to the second.

His fingers stopped moving.

"What is this?"

Evelyn explained that Margaret had acquired forty-eight surrounding acres over more than fifteen years and placed those properties into a family land trust.

Her entire interest in the trust had passed to me.

The land included mature forest, a natural spring, and an important wildlife conservation corridor.

The conservation organization had expressed interest in discussing a permanent conservation easement.

The preliminary assessment suggested that the property and related land interests might be worth approximately $5.8 million.

The figure remained subject to a formal appraisal and negotiations.

Brandon looked at the report again.

"Five point eight million?"

"That's the preliminary estimate," Evelyn said. "It isn't a final valuation."

Vanessa took the papers from him.

She read the number slowly.

Then she looked around the room.

I watched her eyes move toward the polished floor and the restored kitchen.

She seemed to be reconsidering every insult she'd made about the cabin.

For a moment, she said nothing.

Then she turned to me.

"Mom left you all this?"

"She left me her interest in the trust."

"And she never told me?"

"Not that I'm aware of."

Vanessa shook her head.

"This doesn't make sense."

I almost laughed.

Not because anything was funny.

I'd spent days trying to make sense of the same things.

My wife had hidden the true value of the property.

She had left me instructions to find the documents.

And she'd preserved evidence of financial transactions that now required serious examination.

There were reasons for all of it.

I just didn't know every reason yet.

Vanessa set the valuation down.

"She should have left the land to me."

I looked at her.

"You received the beachfront house."

"That isn't the point."

"What is the point, Vanessa?"

She didn't answer.

I waited.

Finally, she said, "I should have known about the trust."

I looked at the report between us.

"Why?"

"Because I'm her daughter."

"So am I supposed to believe that being her daughter gave you a right to everything she owned?"

Her expression hardened.

"That's not what I said."

I rubbed my hands together beneath the table.

I didn't want to argue about who deserved more.

I wanted to know what had happened to Margaret's money.

I wanted to understand why my wife had felt the need to protect me from the very people I had trusted most.

"Your mother made her decisions," I said. "We need to respect those decisions, even when we don't like them."

Vanessa stared at me.

Then she looked toward Evelyn.

"What happens now?"

Evelyn explained that the financial review would continue.

The accountant would finish examining the transactions, and the available evidence would determine what recovery action might be appropriate.

The conservation discussions would proceed separately.

Nothing had been finalized.

There would be no immediate transfer of the property, no instant payment, and no guarantee that the preliminary valuation would become the final figure.

Vanessa seemed to hear only part of that explanation.

She was still looking at the report.

Brandon finally closed his folder.

"Fine. Keep the cabin."

His voice was bitter.

"We don't want it."

I looked at him.

"You've spent several days trying to buy it."

He didn't respond.

Vanessa gathered her purse.

"Dad, we need to talk about this privately."

I shook my head.

"Not today."

She stared at me as though she had never heard me refuse her before.

Then she turned toward the door.

Brandon followed.

Neither of them spoke until they reached the porch.

I watched through the window as they walked toward their car.

Vanessa looked back once.

I couldn't tell whether she was angry, frightened, or simply confused.

Perhaps she was feeling all three.

When the car disappeared down the narrow approach, I sat back in my chair.

The report remained on the table.

So did the bank statements.

For the first time, Vanessa had seen the property her mother had actually left me.

But the value of the land wasn't the thing that troubled me most.

It was the date on that financial transaction.

Two days after Margaret lost consciousness.

I knew that whatever happened next would have to be decided by the evidence, not by my anger.

And I knew I couldn't return to pretending that nothing was wrong.

Source: kaylestore.net

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: The More I Learned About Margaret’s Estate, the Less I Trusted My Own Memories of Our Family and the Promises I Had Made

Vanessa remained standing near the doorway.
