Others do not.”

I looked down at the columns of numbers.

I had spent forty years reading engineering plans, measuring loads, and checking calculations.

Numbers usually told me what I needed to know.

These numbers told me how little I had understood about my own family.

“Can you explain the amount we’re discussing?” I asked.

Daniel turned a page.

“The transfers currently under review total approximately six hundred and forty thousand dollars.”

I had heard that figure before.

Hearing it again did not make it easier to accept.

“Does that mean Vanessa stole six hundred and forty thousand dollars?”

“No,” Evelyn answered carefully. “It means that amount of money requires examination. We must distinguish documented expenses, authorized transactions, unsupported transfers, and anything that can actually be established as improper.”

I appreciated her precision.

I did not want anger making decisions that the evidence could not support.

Daniel showed me several transfers to accounts associated with Brandon’s property business.

There were invoices for maintenance and services, but some lacked supporting records.

Others did not appear to match the dates or amounts of the payments.

I studied one statement for a long time.

Margaret had been receiving cancer treatments when the transfer occurred.

I remembered those weeks clearly.

She had been tired after appointments, and I had spent evenings preparing her meals and helping her settle into bed.

Vanessa had offered to help manage some financial matters.

At the time, I had been grateful.

I had thought my daughter was making a difficult season easier for us.

“Who authorized this one?” I asked.

Daniel checked the documentation.

“The available record identifies Vanessa as the person who authorized it.”

“How long before Margaret died?”

“Two days after she lost consciousness.”

I put the statement down.

For a moment, I could hear the clock ticking on the office wall.

I had been sitting beside Margaret during those final days.

I remembered the quiet room, the medicine bottles, and the way I held her hand even when she could no longer answer me.

I had believed Vanessa was helping us through the worst thing that had ever happened to our family.

Now I had to consider what else might have been happening while I watched my wife disappear.

Evelyn waited until I looked up.

“Robert, we need to keep two things separate. Your grief is real, and these records deserve scrutiny. Neither one changes what the evidence ultimately proves.”

“I understand.”

I wanted to believe that I did.

Daniel moved to the next section.

Some payments could potentially be explained by legitimate household or medical expenses.

Others needed more documentation.

The records did not answer every question, but they established enough inconsistencies to justify moving forward.

Evelyn had preserved copies of the relevant documents and was preparing the next steps for civil recovery proceedings.

I asked what would happen if Vanessa claimed her mother had approved everything.

“She may make that argument,” Evelyn said. “Then we examine what supports it. We don't decide the case based on anyone’s confidence or anger.”

I thought about Vanessa standing in my cabin, staring at the renovated kitchen.

She had looked surprised by the property’s condition.

She had looked even more surprised when she heard the preliminary estimate.

But she had not looked surprised when the financial records were mentioned.

At least, not in the same way.

I wondered whether she had spent the past months assuming I would never discover what Margaret had preserved.

I wondered whether Brandon had made the same assumption.

Neither question was an answer.

When the meeting ended, Daniel packed the binders into a case.

Evelyn kept the original documents secured in her office.

I carried only copies and a short list of questions I needed to answer.

Outside, the morning air felt colder than it had when I arrived.

I sat in my car without turning the key.

My phone rang.

Vanessa’s name appeared on the screen.

I nearly let it go to voicemail.

Then I answered.

“Dad?”

Her voice sounded smaller than it had during our last argument.

“Yes.”

“Evelyn told Brandon that you’re moving forward.”

“She told him the records are being reviewed.”

“You know what I mean.”

“I know what the process is.”

She sighed.

“Dad, this is getting out of control.”

I looked at the leather folder on the passenger seat.

“Six hundred and forty thousand dollars is not a small matter.”

“You keep saying that number like it proves something.”

“It proves that the transactions need to be explained.”

“Mom wanted us taken care of.”

“I wanted that too.”

“Then why are you doing this to me?”

I closed my eyes.

There it was again.

The question that turned every concern into an attack on her.

“I’m not doing this to you, Vanessa. You have all that property.
