I thought it mattered to him."

My voice weakened.

"I guess I was wrong."

Robert placed the gloves on the bench.

He didn't tell me that my father probably had good reasons.

He didn't suggest that Lauren might be suffering more than I realized.

He didn't ask me to forgive anyone.

He listened.

That was what made it possible for me to continue.

"I don't want to spend Saturday proving I can handle being left behind," I said.

The words came out quietly.

I looked down at my hands.

"I want to walk with somebody who's genuinely happy to be there."

I hadn't rehearsed the sentence.

I hadn't planned how to ask the question.

But once I said it, there was no point pretending I had come to discuss anything else.

I looked at Robert.

"Would you walk me down the aisle?"

He went completely still.

For a second, I thought I had surprised him so much that he hadn't understood.

Then I saw his expression change.

His eyes filled with tears.

Robert was a broad-shouldered man who spent most of his time doing practical things.

He could repair an engine, build a cabinet, and work with wood until every surface was smooth.

He was not a man who usually explained his feelings in long conversations.

I had seen him show affection by bringing Ethan the right tool before he asked for it.

I had watched him fix things around the house without making anyone feel indebted.

I had seen him stand quietly beside people who needed help and wait until they were ready to accept it.

But I had never seen him look at me quite like that.

He took a step toward me.

"You're asking me to do that?"

I nodded.

I was afraid that if I tried to speak again, I would start crying.

Robert's mouth tightened as he tried to control his expression.

Then he pulled me into his arms.

I held on to him.

His embrace was firm and steady, the kind that didn't ask anything from me except that I let myself be there.

He didn't make me explain why the request mattered.

He didn't need to.

When he drew back, his eyes were still wet.

He looked at me with a seriousness I had rarely seen directed at myself.

"Amelia, I would be honored to stand beside you."

I let out a breath I hadn't realized I was holding.

He gave my shoulders a gentle squeeze.

"I mean that."

I believed him.

That was the part I hadn't known I needed most.

Not a grand gesture.

Not a way to make my parents regret their decision.

Not a substitute for the relationship I wished I had with my father.

Just someone who was glad I had asked.

I wiped my face with the back of my hand.

"I'm sorry to ask you so suddenly."

Robert shook his head.

"You don't need to apologize for asking me."

I looked at the workbench.

His gloves were lying beside the piece of cherry wood, and the saw stood silent behind him.

I thought about the shelves he had built in my workshop.

I remembered the carved initials in the oak.

At the time, I had thought it was a small, thoughtful detail.

Now I understood that it was part of something larger.

Robert had never needed to make a promise in order to show me he cared.

He had simply kept showing up.

I had been so focused on the father who was withdrawing from my life that I hadn't fully appreciated the person who had quietly made room for me in his.

We talked for a little while longer.

Robert wanted to know what time the ceremony began and whether he needed to arrive early.

He asked what I would be carrying and whether the walk would be long.

His questions were practical.

They were also comforting.

He was already thinking about how to make the day go well.

I told him about the converted stone barn, the wooden pews, and the flowers I had been arranging in my workshop.

I explained that nearly two hundred guests were expected.

Robert listened and nodded.

Then he glanced down at his clothes.

"I suppose I'll need something a little better than these."

I laughed for the first time that morning.

"Probably."

He smiled.

The sound of it made the whole conversation feel real.

I was going to walk into my wedding with Robert Cole beside me.

The decision didn't erase what my father had done.

It didn't make my mother's words less painful.

But it gave me something I hadn't felt since the phone calls.

A choice.

I drove home with the windows slightly open.

The morning air moved through the car, and for once I wasn't rehearsing arguments in my head.

I didn't imagine what I would say if Dad called again.

I didn't plan how to convince Mom that my feelings were legitimate.

I didn't think about whether Lauren would be pleased or angry.

I thought about Saturday.

I thought about the moment the music would begin.

I imagined standing behind the doors of the barn with Robert's arm beneath my hand.

And I imagined walking forward without having to apologize for needing someone beside me.

When I arrived at the workshop, I went straight to the shelves Robert had built.

I ran my fingers over the smooth oak.

My initials were still there.

I had never tried to hide them, but I had rarely paid attention to them.

Now I stood looking at those small carved letters for longer than I expected.

They reminded me that care could be quiet.

It could be practical.

It could be something a person offered without demanding that you earn it first.

I returned to the flowers.

The fourteen copper vases stood where I had left them.

I checked each arrangement and adjusted a few stems.

The work felt different now.

Not because the wedding had suddenly become perfect, but because I no longer felt responsible for making every other person comfortable.

I could be sad about Dad.

I could love my sister and still recognize that her threat had hurt me.

I could understand that my parents were worried about Sophie and Noah without agreeing that my wedding should be sacrificed to avoid upsetting Lauren.

Two things could be true at once.

I had spent too many years believing that understanding someone meant surrendering my own position.

That afternoon, Ethan came by the workshop.

He found me finishing the last arrangement.

I looked up when he entered.

He could tell something had changed.

"Did you see him?"

I nodded.

"And?"

I put the final stem into place.

"Robert said yes."

Ethan smiled.

For a moment, he didn't say anything.

Then he crossed the room and kissed my forehead.

"I'm glad."

I watched his face.

He wasn't smiling because my father had been replaced.

He was smiling because someone he loved had agreed to do something meaningful for someone else he loved.

That mattered to me.

I didn't want Ethan to feel he had to choose between his family and mine.

I didn't want Saturday to become a competition between two fathers.

I simply wanted to walk into the ceremony without feeling abandoned.

Ethan seemed to understand.

He looked around the workshop at the copper vases, the herbs, and the tools arranged along the shelves.

"You've done a beautiful job," he said.

I glanced at the flowers.

"Thank you."

I wanted to believe that the day could still be beautiful.

Not flawless.

Not free of disappointment.

Beautiful.

I had begun to understand that those were different things.

That evening, I checked the wedding arrangements one last time.

The flowers were ready.

The ceremony details were settled.

Robert knew where he needed to be.

I didn't know whether my parents had changed their minds.

I didn't know what Lauren would say when she learned who would be walking beside me.

I didn't know whether Dad would understand what his decision had cost.

For once, I decided those questions could wait.

I closed the workshop door and turned off the lights.

The carved initials on the oak shelves disappeared into the dimness, but I knew exactly where they were.

Saturday was coming.

And this time, I wasn't going to spend the days before it begging someone to want to stand beside me.

Source: <a
