he asked.

I considered the question.

Part of me wanted to walk straight over and ask Dad why he had been willing to let me enter alone.

Another part wanted to ask Mom why protecting Lauren's feelings had mattered more than protecting mine.

I could imagine the conversation.

Dad would explain that he hadn't wanted to make things worse.

Mom would say everyone had been under pressure.

Lauren might insist that she had never intended to ruin my wedding.

They would all have their reasons.

And I would once again be asked to understand.

"No," I said.

Ethan nodded.

"Then don't."

There was no judgment in his voice.

He wasn't telling me to avoid my family forever.

He was reminding me that I didn't have to solve everything while I was supposed to be celebrating my marriage.

I looked down at the glass in my hand.

A drop of water ran along the side and fell onto the tablecloth.

I wiped it with a napkin.

Such a small thing.

Yet I found myself thinking about the workshop again, about the damaged dahlia I had removed when Dad called.

I had taken it out because the petal looked wrong.

I hadn't thrown away the entire arrangement.

I had made a small adjustment and continued.

Maybe that was what I needed to do now.

Not pretend nothing had happened.

Not destroy the day because something had gone wrong.

Just recognize what was damaged and decide what to do next.

The reception continued.

When the music changed, guests moved toward the dance floor.

Ethan asked me to dance.

I accepted.

He placed one hand at my waist and held the other in his.

We moved slowly beneath the lights.

For a few minutes, I allowed myself to forget the tables and the guests and the family members standing at the edges of the room.

I rested my head near his shoulder.

He kissed my hair.

I felt safe.

Not because I believed life would always be easy with him.

Because I trusted that when something became difficult, he would face it with me instead of asking me to carry it alone.

That was what marriage meant to me now.

Not the perfect wedding.

Not the photographs.

Not the approval of every person in the room.

A choice made again when the moment became uncomfortable.

When the song ended, Ethan and I returned to the tables.

Robert was standing near the edge of the dance floor.

He looked pleased to see us.

"Having a good time?" he asked.

I smiled.

"I am."

He nodded toward the flowers.

"They look beautiful in here."

I looked at the nearest copper vase.

"Thank you. I wanted everything to feel warm."

"It does."

He said it simply.

Then he glanced toward the other guests.

I followed his eyes and saw my father standing near the far side of the room.

Dad was watching us.

When our eyes met, he looked away.

The movement was quick, but I noticed it.

I didn't know whether he was embarrassed, angry, or simply unable to decide what to say.

I had spent much of my life trying to interpret his silences.

I had treated every pause as a problem I needed to solve.

That evening, I decided not to chase the meaning of that look.

If Dad wanted to tell me something, he could come and speak to me.

I had already done enough work to make the relationship possible.

Robert noticed that I had gone quiet.

He didn't ask what I was thinking.

He simply stood beside me.

For the first time, I could see the difference between being surrounded by family and feeling supported by someone.

Those things were not always the same.

A room could be full of relatives and still leave you lonely.

A single person could stand beside you and make you feel less alone than you had in years.

I looked at Robert.

The sawdust on his cuff had almost disappeared beneath the evening's movement.

I smiled at the small detail.

He raised an eyebrow.

"What?"

"Nothing."

He laughed.

"All right."

I didn't explain.

Some things were easier to carry when they didn't need to be turned into speeches.

Later, I saw Mom speaking with Lauren.

Their heads were close together, and Lauren's face looked tense.

I wondered whether they were discussing the ceremony.

I wondered whether Lauren was upset that Robert had walked with me.

I wondered whether Mom was trying to reassure her that the family had not been embarrassed.

Then I stopped myself.

I didn't know what they were saying.

I didn't need to invent a conversation in order to understand what had already happened.

Lauren had threatened to keep her children away at Christmas.

Dad had changed his decision.

Mom had told me to accept it quietly.

Those facts were enough.

I could care about my sister's difficult marriage without accepting the idea that her distress should determine every important moment in my life.

I could care about my parents without pretending their choices had no consequences.

And I could enjoy my wedding without waiting for them to approve of the way I had handled it.

The music grew louder.

Someone called for Ethan and me to join the other guests.

Ethan held out his hand.

I took it.

We returned to the dance floor, and I let myself smile.

Not the careful smile my mother had demanded.

Not a smile designed to convince the room that nothing was wrong.

A real one.

The day was not perfect.

It was still mine.

Source: 1millionstories.net

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: As the Evening Settled over the Barn, I Began to Understand That Walking Beside Someone Was Not the Same as Being Chosen by Them

The reception began with music and conversation.
